  • Purpose: Purpose: The usability of a mathematical model modified for analysis of the static stability of an asymmetric tractor-harvester system was investigated. Method: The modified asynchronous mathematical model was validated through empirical experiments, and the effects of movements of the center of gravity (CG) coordinates on the stability against lateral overturning were analyzed through simulations. Results: Changes in the lateral overturning angle of the system were investigated when the coordinates of the CG of the system were moved within the variable range. The errors between simulation results and empirical experiments were compared, and the results were -4.7% at the left side overturning and -0.1% at the right side overturning. The asymmetric system was characterized in such a way that the right side overturning had an increase in overturning angle in the (+) variable range, while it had a decrease in overturning angle in the (-) variable range. In addition, the left side overturning showed an opposite result to that of the right side. At the declination angle (296<${\gamma}$<76), the right side overturning had an increase in the maximum overturning angle of 3.6%, in the minimum overturning angle of 20.3%, and in the mean overturning angle of 15.9%. Furthermore, at the declination angle (284<${\gamma}$<64), the left side overturning had a decrease in the maximum overturning angle of 29.2%, in the minimum overturning angle of 44%, and in a mean overturning angle of 39.7%. Conclusion: The modified mathematical model was useful for predicting the overturning angle of the asymmetric tractor-harvester system, and verified that a movement of the CG coordinates had a critical effect on its stability. In particular, the left side overturning was the most vulnerable to stability, regardless of the direction of declination angle.

  • A self-centering wall (SCW) is a lateral resistant rocking system that incorporates posttensioned (PT) tendons to provide a self-centering capacity along with dampers to dissipate energy. This paper investigates the rocking responses of a SCW with base viscous dampers under a sinusoidal-type pulse considering yielding and fracture behaviour of the PT tendon. The differences in the overturning acceleration caused by different initial forces in the PT tendon are computed by the theoretical method. The exact analytical solution to the linear approximate equation of motion is also provided for slender SCWs. Finally, the effects of the ductile behaviour of PT tendons on the rocking response of a SCW are analysed. The results demonstrate that SCWs exhibit two overturning modes under pulse excitation. The overturning region with Mode 1 in the PT force cases separates the safe region of the wall into two parts: region S1 with an elastic tendon and region S2 with a fractured tendon. The minimum overturning acceleration of a SCW with an elastic-brittle tendon becomes insensitive to excitation frequency as the PT force increases. After the plastic behaviour of the PT tendon is considered, the minimum overturning acceleration of a SCW is increased significantly in the whole range of the studied wg/p.

  • An overload limiter is used to prevent its overturning accident during an operation of a movable crane. Recently the indirect measuring method, which measures hoisting load and overturning moment of overload limiter, demands instead of the existing method, which measures only hoisting load. The indirectly measuring method is how to conduct the hoisting load and overturning moment as measuring the load of hydraulic cylinder for a luffing driving of boom. So we need to develop the multi-angular pin type load cell with the measuring angle of ${\pm}10$ degree instead of the existing load cell with the measuring angle of ${\pm}2$ degree. In this study the finite element analysis is conducted to evaluate the effect of the aspect ratio of measuring cross section on the measuring limit of the load cell to develop the many-angular pin type load cell. For this investigation, the aspect ratio of measuring cross section and load applying angle were adopted as design parameters and the stresses of measuring part were evaluated for each parameter.

  • A simple method of assessing the risk of overturning of precast reinforced concrete columns is presented in this paper. The displacement-based methodology introduced herein is distinguished from conventional force-based codified methods of aseismic design of structures. As evidenced by results from field tests precast reinforced concrete columns can be displaced to a generous limit without sustaining damage and then fully recover from most of the displacement afterwards. Realistic predictions of the displacement demand of such (rocking) system in conjunction with the displacement capacity estimates enable fragility curves for overturning to be constructed. The interesting observation from the developed fragility curves is that the probability of failure of the precast soft-storey column decreases with increasing size of the column importantly illustrating the "size effect" phenomenon.

  • Purpose: In order to find out stability condition which governs design of drystone masonry retaining walls and changing patterns of installed width of blocks of the wall for each stability conditions, typical wall was assumed and designed. Method: For the purpose of this study, 10 m high drystone masonry retaining wall with general block size and soil properties were considered and dimensions of the wall were determined by applying stability conditions of sliding and overturning and the design results were compared with each other. Result: According to the design results, installed width of blocks determined by considering stability of sliding were greatly less than those determined by considering stability of overturning and these differences were not decreased noticeably even though same values of factors of safety for sliding and overturning were applied. Between the two methods of determining the installed width of blocks, it could be seen that the method of considering failure wedge of lower part of overturning parts of the wall governed the design instead of considering horizontal base of overturning parts of the wall. Conclusion: In case of considering failure wedge of lower part of overturning parts of the wall, it could be seen that the installed width of blocks increased as the inclination angle of failure wedge increased. In case of considering overturning at the lower part of the wall with certain assumed inclination angle of failure wedge, it could be seen that installed width of blocks decreased as the inclination angle of failure wedge decreased by geometric restrictions of the wall.

  • This paper presents the structural analysis of two-span structures constructed by incremental launching method to traverse the existing facilities. The structure with a relatively short launching span can not be secure the structural stability caused by excessive deflection and overturning prior to reaching the maximum strength, because the length of the other span is different or the rear structure is not continuous. In order to estimate the stability of the construction stages of deflection and the overturning, the structural analysis was carried out. The parameters of the analysis is launching span ratio of the launching nose and the upper structure, weight ratio and so on. From the analysis result, the effects of parameters were investigated and a deflection formula of the launching nose and the condition of the overturning of structure were proposed.

  • This study presents a method to evaluate overturning safety and derailment safety of korean tilting train using kinematic analysis of four-bar linkage tilting mechanism. The safety is evaluated considering tilting vehicle body CG displacement. The design sensitivity for stable and safe maximum speed is evaluated around current korean tilting train design data. The current design shows minimum center of gravity displacement. Higher speed can be achieved with larger center of gravity displacement.

  • Response spectrum analysis method(RSA) rather than time history analysis method(THA) continues to e used by the profession for evaluating maximum dynamic responses of structures subjected to earthquake excitations. Nevertheless, this simple and practical method can cause significant errors in some cases with unproper modal combination method and so on. To obtain more exact responses based n RSA many studies have been carried out considering displacement of top story, base shear and overturning moment. The purpose of this study is to verify error characteristics in RSA with respect to various responses including displacement shear force and overturning moment of each story. It's shown that RSA appears to yield underestimated responses when compared to THA calculations. Also, errors involved in RSA computations grow with an increase in total number of stories.

  • Recently, several cases of destruction of old cylindrical silos by explosive demolition method have been reported. This study deals with the subject concerning the pre-weakening of a cylindrical concrete silo for the application of overturning explosive demolition method. In the past, the pre-weakening operation of structure in explosive demolition has been done by use of some empirical methods. These empirical approaches, however, have possibilities of unexpected accidents. In order to provide a guideline for the pre-weakening of cylindrical silos and similar structures, this paper shows the result of a case study, in which the instability of a silo due to pre-weakening is investigated by a numerical structural analysis before actually conducting pre-weakening and demolition operations.

  • Walls for preventing floods using overturning or buoyancy method have been developed as replacement construction for preventing floods in and outside country. However, as they have some problems with pre-inspection and maintenance control, Eco-moving wall structure for preventing floods was studied and first developed using Glass Fiber Reinforced Composite which has not only light weight but outstanding strength. The developed wall structure for preventing floods offering structural stability and field applicability through numerical analysis was confirmed to reduce construction expenses by around 87~95% and secure waterproof property with the inside of the wall installed rubber water stopper.
