In this study, we developed a model to simulate the interaction between sediment and the overlying water. The model deals with water-sediment interaction in terms of the sedimentation of organic detritus from the pelagic zone into the benthic zone and the release of nutrients occurring in the reverse direction. The model was tested and verified by comparing the predicted release rates of phosphorus from the sediment in Osaka Bay with actual observed values. The results accurately reproduced the seasonal change in release rates. The results well represented seasonal change of the release rates. A long-term prediction of water and sediment quality was performed for the period from 1950 to 1999. Nutrient loads from land and the boundary conditions of 3-D baroclinic flows were season-adjusted. The model accurately reproduced the changing trends in phosphorus, nitrogen, and COD concentrations in Osaka Bay over a long period of time.

An experiment to study the effect of temperature, light, and dredging on release of nutrients downstream from Gongjicheon in the Uiam reservoir was carried out in the laboratory using sediments from different depths. At various water temperatures, dissolved total nitrogen was not released, but the average nutrient flux of dissolved total phosphorus was increased (0.034 at $15^{\circ}C$, 0.005 at $20^{\circ}C$, 0.154 at $25^{\circ}C$, $0.592mg/m^2/d$ at $30^{\circ}C$). Dissolved total phosphorous was released in controlled darkness. In contrast, in controlled light, the concentrations of dissolved total phosphorous and dissolved total nitrogen in the overlying water steadily decreased during the study period (70 d), because they were continuously consumed by the growth of photosynthetic algae. However, there was no significant relationship between water nutrient concentration, nutrient release, and the depth of the sediment. We concluded that the dredging of sediment would not affect the nutrient release rate of the sediment, because there were no significant differences in the nutrient concentrations released from the sediment. When the sediment was removed from the surface to 20 cm in depth, the nutrients were not transferred to the water body, implying that the sediment removal had little effect on secondary pollution.

Coalfields in Korea have been grouped into thirteen based on mainly geographycal and geological structure, ten out of which have been developed. To classify the phisico-chemical characteristics of mine drainage from each coalfield and, if possible, to clarify the intrinsic reasons of them. Sampling of waters from 59 mines in eight coalfields has been carried out. Higher pH of drainage water from the mines of the Cungchung coalfield belong to the Beading system, Mesozoic era than those belong to the Pyungan system, Proterozoic era is due to the low content of sulfides of neighboring strata. The drainage from coal beds overlying limestone bed mostly show high pH. Waters from the Gangrung and Samchuck coalfields coal beds are located within black shale formation which contains a lot of sulfides showed mostly very high metal and S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ concentrations.
It has been an essential part for the safety assessment of nuclear power plants to understand various phenomena associated with the molten core-concrete interaction(MCCI) under severe accidents. In this study, the severe accident analysis code MELCOR was used to simulate the MCCI experiments such as SWISS and SURC test series which had been performed in Sandia National Laboratories(SNL). The calculation results were compared with corresponding experimental data such as melt temperature, concrete ablation distance, gas generation rate, and aerosol release rate. Good agreements were observed between MELCOR calculation and experimental data. The melt pool was sustained within the range of high temperature and the concrete ablation occurred continuously. The gas generation and aerosol release were under the influence of melt temperature and overlying water pool, respectively.
In order to analyze the effect of the cyclic lateral loading on the response of a pile-soil system, a full-scale single steel pile was subjected to one-way cyclic loading. The test pile was driven into a bi-layered soil consisting of a normally consolidated saturated clay overlying a silty sandy layer, the site being submerged by water up to one meter above the mudline in order to reproduce the conditions of an offshore pile foundation. The aim of this paper is to present the main results of interpretation of the cyclic lateral tests in terms of pile deflections, bending moment, and cyclic P-Y curves. From these latter an absolute secant reaction modulus EAS,N was derived and a simple calculation model of the test single pile is proposed based on this modulus. Two applications of the proposed model are carried out, one with a 2D finite element modelling, and the second with a load transfer curves-based method.
The evolution of the mining-induced fracture network formed during longwall top coal caving (LTCC) has a great influence on the gas drainage, roof control, top coal recovery ratio and engineering safety of aquifers. To reveal the evolution of the mining-induced stress and fracture network formed during LTCC, the fracture network in front of the working face was observed by borehole video experiments. A discrete element model was established by the universal discrete element code (UDEC) to explore the local stress distribution. The regression relationship between the fractal dimension of the fracture network and mining stress was established. The results revealed the following: (1) The mining disturbance had the most severe impact on the borehole depth range between approximately 10 m and 25 m. (2) The distribution of fractures was related to the lithology and its integrity. The coal seam was mainly microfractures, which formed a complex fracture network. The hard rock stratum was mainly included longitudinal cracks and separated fissures. (3) Through a numerical simulation, the stress distribution in front of the mining face and the development of the fracturing of the overlying rock were obtained. There was a quadratic relationship between the fractal dimension of the fractures and the mining stress. The results obtained herein will provide a reference for engineering projects under similar geological conditions.
The most effective way to distinguish subsurface interfaces that produce various geophysical responses is through the integration of multiple geophysical methods, with each method detecting both a complementary and unique set of distinct physical properties relating to the subsurface. In this study, shallow seismic reflection (SSR) and ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were conducted at the Cheongju-Gadeok site of the Korea National Groundwater Monitoring Network to map the water table, which was measured at 12 m depth during the geophysical surveys. The water table proved to be a good target reflector in both datasets, as the abrupt transition from the overlying unsaturated weathered rock to the underlying saturated weathered rock yielded large acoustic impedance and dielectric constant contrasts. The two datasets were depth converted and integrated into a single section, with the SSR and GPR surveys conducted to ensure subsurface imaging at approximately the same wavelength. The GPR data provided detailed information on the upper ~15 m of the section, whereas the SSR data imaged structures at depths of 10-45 m. The integrated section thus captured the full depth coverage of the sandy clay, water table, weathered rock, soft rock, and hard rock structures, which correlated well with local drillcore and water table observations. Incorporation of these two geophysical datasets yielded a synthetic section that resembled a simplified aquifer model, with the best-fitting seismic velocity, dielectric constant, and porosity of the saturated weathered layer being $v_{seismic}=1000m/s$, ${\varepsilon}_r=16$, and ${\phi}=0.32$, respectively.

The nocturnal low-level jet makes a significant impact on carbon and water exchanges and turbulent mixing processes in the atmospheric boundary layer. This study reports a case study of nocturnal surface fluxes such as $CO_2$ and water vapor in the surface layer observed at a flat and homogeneous site in the presence of low-level jets (LLJs). In particular, it documents the temporal evolution of the overlying jets and the coincident response of surface fluxes. The present study highlights several factors linking the evolution of low-level jets to surface fluxes: 1) wavelet analysis shows that turbulent fluxes have similar time scales with temporal scale of LLJ evolution; 2) turbulent mixing is enhanced during the transition period of low-level jets; and 3) $CO_2$, water vapor and heat show dissimilarity from momentum during the period. We also found that LLJ activity is related not only to turbulent motions but also to the divergence of mean flow. An examination of scalar profiles and turbulence data reveal that LLJs transport $CO_2$ and water vapor by advection in the stable boundary layer, suggesting that surface fluxes obtained from the micrometeorological method such as nocturnal boundary layer budget technique should carefully interpreted in the presence of LLJs.
Piston cores retrieved from the eastern part of the deep-water Ulleung Basin were analyzed to access the potential of hydrocarbon gas generation and natural gas hydrate (NGH) formation. Seismic data acquired in the study area were also analyzed to determine the presence of hydrocarbon gas and/or NGH, and to map their distribution. Core analyses revealed high total organic carbon (TOC) contents which favor hydrocarbon generation. The cores recovered from the southern study area showed the sufficient residual hydrocarbon gas concentrations for the formation of significant NGH. These cores also showed the cracks developed parallel to the bedding that suggest significant gas content in situ. A number of seismic blanking zones were observed on seismic data. They are identified as vertical to sub-vertical chimneys caused by the upward migration of pore fluid or gas, and containing of free gas and/or NGH. Often, they are associated with velocity pull-up structures that are interpreted to be the result of high-velocity NGH. The seismic data also showed several bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs) that are associated with overlying NGH and underlying free gas. The distribution of blanking zones and BSRs would be impacted by the lateral differences of upward methane fluxes.
This research was carried out to understand the impacts of thickness of sand capping to control phosphorus release from sediment into overlying water. As capping effectively retards release flux, phosphorus concentration in water body can be maintained if phosphorus release rate was kept under microbial degradation rate. With capping thickness increases, deaeration rate become less, while reaeration coefficient become higher. Phosphorus release rate and capping thickness were linearly correlated. The results of regression analysis indicated that phosphorus release can be controlled effectively by sand capping of least 20${\sim}$40 mm thickness.
