  • In modern warfare, securing time for preemptive response is recognized as an important factor of victory. The naval combat system, the core of naval forces, also strives to increase the effectiveness of engagement by improving its real-time information processing capabilities. As part of that, it is considered to use the TPR-tree in the naval combat system's target indexing because spatio-temporal searches can be performed quickly even as the number of target information increases. However, because the TPR-tree is slow to process updates, there is a limitation to handling frequent updates. In this paper, we present a method for improving the update performance of TPR-tree by applying the bottom-up update scheme, previously proposed for R-tree, to the TPR-tree. In particular, we analyze the causes of overlaps occurring when applying the bottom-up updates and propose ways to limit the MBR expansion to solve it. Our experimental results show that the proposed technique improves the update performance of TPR-tree from 3.5 times to 12 times while maintaining search performance.

  • The WTO was established in 1995 as an organization which protects and promotes free trade among its members. However, since about this time they have signed many bilateral and multilateral FTAs and joined many other new international agreements and organizations, the purpose of which at times overlaps with that of the WTO. Some existing works on international organizations contend that these FTAs and many other IOs could weaken the role of the WTO as a promoter of free trade. However, the results of regression analyses on the use of the WTO do not support this argument, but show that the experiences of WTO members in these FTAs and many other IOs help them to use its dispute settlement mechanism more frequently

  • In this study a safety evaluation method is presented for a ADAS vehicle to be tested in collision situation when multiple vehicles are present on a single lane. Test scenarios are developed based on Euro-NCAP assessment scenarios, accident database and related simulation results in previous works. An automated evaluation system that is called as the K-target mover is used for active safety evaluation experiments. The experiments are conducted with two types of tests. First, the rear-end collision tests with 25% and 50% overlap for the test vehicle and target vehicle are conducted with the two kinds of test vehicles. On the other hand, the rear-end collision tests which include multiple vehicles in a single lane with 25% and 50% overlaps, are also conducted. Experimental results show that the test vehicles with ADAS cannot recognize the collision situation sometimes in the developed test scenarios, even in the case that the test vehicle showed stable performance in the simple overlap scenarios.

  • Lamport's one-time password (OTP) was originally proposed to address the weaknesses of a simple password system: fixed password, pre-shared password. However, a main weakness of Lamport's OTP is that a root hash value of a new hash chain should be re-registered after consuming all the hash values since OTP generation is based on the finite hash chain. Several studies have been conducted to solve these drawbacks, but new drawbacks such as increased burden of proof for verifiers and verifiers have been exposed. In this paper, we propose and compare a novel OTP that overlaps several short hash chains instead of one long hash chain, which is the core of existing Lamport OTP, to solve the drawbacks while maintaining the advantages of Lamport.

  • Chronic maxillary sinusitis is a common disease, with symptoms of dull, aching pain or pressure below the eyes and signs such as tenderness over the involved sinus, whereas trigeminal neuralgia is described as severe, paroxysmal, and lancinating brief pain limited in distributions of one or more divisions of trigeminal nerve. In cases where these two non-odontogenic toothache symptoms overlaps, the diagnostic process can be confusing. Here, we report a case of a 54-year-old male patient with chief complaints of intermittent, severe, and electric-like pain in the upper left premolar and first molar area, initially diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia but finally with maxillary sinusitis after pain recurrence 2 years after that. Therefore, thorough history taking and precise imaging interpretation should be considered to make correct diagnose especially in case of a patient with newly developed or altered or atypical symptoms.

  • In addition to the five well-characterized genes of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), this virus contains a sixth open reading frame (ORF6) that encodes a 4.8 kDa protein. TMV ORF6 overlaps the ORFs encoding the 30 kDa movement protein and the adjacent 17.5 kDa capsid protein. Although the 4.8 kDa protein could not be detected in vivo, alteration of the AUG codons of this ORF resulted in a mutant virus that attenuated the virulence of the mutated TMV in Nicotiana benthamiana, but not N. tabacum (tobacco). These sequence changes did not affect either the replication or movement of the mutated TMV. Expression of TMV ORF6 from the virus expression vector Potato virus X (PVX) intensified the virulence of this virus in N. benthmiana, but not tobacco, while expression of TMV ORF6 from the virus expression vector Tobacco rattle virus enhanced the pathogenicity observed in both N. benthamima and tobacco. Thus, the TMV ORF6 is a host- and virus-specific. virulence factor. However, two separate assays indicated that the TMV 4.8 kDa protein was not a suppression of RNA silencing. A fusion protein formed between the TMV 4.8 kDa protein and the green fluorescent protein was expressed from the PVX vector and localized to plasmodesmata. Possible roles of the 4.8 kDa protein in pathogenicity will be discussed

  • The concept of Digital Twin (DT) has been receiving an increasing amount of attention in the construction management and building engineering research domains. Although the benefits of DT are evident, confusion with regards to the concept of DTs and its relationship with others such as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Internet of Things (IoT) remains. This paper aims to help allay this confusion through an in-depth analysis of the definition of DT and its unique characteristics. As such, a review of the past and current definitions of DT and CPS in various domains is performed. An analysis is then conducted to identify the overlaps between the definition of DT with CPS, as well as with BIM and IoT. Finally, given the relatively closer resemblances between DT and CPS, a set of four distinct dimensions enabling their comparative analysis and highlighting their shared and unique characteristics is discussed. This paper contributes to the existing literature by exploring the definition of DT and presenting two original conceptualizations that help further refine the concept of DT in the construction and management and building engineering domain.

  • The modeling efficiency of concrete meso-models close to real concrete is one of the important issues that limit the accuracy of mechanical simulation. In order to improve the modeling efficiency and the closeness of the numerical aggregate shape to the real aggregate, this paper proposes a method for generating a two-dimensional concrete meso-model based on pixel matrix and skeleton theory. First, initial concrete model (a container for placing aggregate) is generated using pixel matrix. Then, the skeleton curve of the residual space that is the model after excluding the existing aggregate is obtained using a thinning algorithm. Finally, the final model is obtained by placing the aggregate according to the curve branching points. Compared with the traditional Monte Carlo placement method, the proposed method greatly reduces the number of overlaps between aggregates by up to 95%, and the placement efficiency does not significantly decrease with increasing aggregate content. The model developed is close to the actual concrete experiments in terms of aggregate gradation, aspect ratio, asymmetry, concavity and convexity, and old-new mortar ratio, cracking form, and stress-strain curve. In addition, the cracking loss process of concrete under uniaxial compression was explained at the mesoscale.

  • Selenium possesses the chemotherapeutic feature by inducing apoptosis in cancer cell with trivial side effects on normal cells. However, the mechanism in which is not clearly understood. Emerging evidence indicates the overlaps between the autophagy and the apoptosis. In this study, we have investigated the role of autophagy in selenium-induced apoptosis in NB4 cells. We find that autophagy is suppressed in NB4 cells treated by sodium selenite, as measured by electron microscope, acridine orange staining and western blot. Moreover, selenite combined with autophagy inhibitor contributes to the up-regulation of apoptosis, while the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway is down- regulated. Consistently, when the inhibitor of PI3K was applied, the autophagic level significantly decreased. In summary, sodium selenite increases NB4 cell apoptosis by autophagy inhibition through PI3K/Akt, and the inhibition of autophagy contributes to the up-regulation of apoptosis.
