  • The present paper presents multiscale modelling via coupling of the discrete and finite element methods. Theoretical formulation of the discrete element method using spherical or cylindrical particles has been briefly reviewed. Basic equations of the finite element method using the explicit time integration have been given. The micr-macro transition for the discrete element method has been discussed. Theoretical formulations for macroscopic stress and strain tensors have been given. Determination of macroscopic constitutive properties using dimensionless micro-macro relationships has been proposed. The formulation of the multiscale DEM/FEM model employing the DEM and FEM in different subdomains of the same body has been presented. The coupling allows the use of partially overlapping DEM and FEM subdomains. The overlap zone in the two coupling algorithms is introduced in order to provide a smooth transition from one discretization method to the other. Coupling between the DEM and FEM subdomains is provided by additional kinematic constraints imposed by means of either the Lagrange multipliers or penalty function method. The coupled DEM/FEM formulation has been implemented in the authors' own numerical program. Good performance of the numerical algorithms has been demonstrated in a number of examples.

  • A novel empirical mode decomposition strategy based on Fourier transform and band-pass filter techniques, contributing to efficient instantaneous vibration analyses, is developed in this study. Two key improvements are proposed. The first is associated with the adoption of a band-pass filter technique for intrinsic mode function sifting. The primary characteristic of decomposed components is that their bandwidths do not overlap in the frequency domain. The second improvement concerns an attempt to design narrowband constraints as the essential requirements for intrinsic mode function to make it physically meaningful. Because all decomposed components are generated with respect to their intrinsic narrow bandwidth and strict sifting from high to low frequencies successively, they are orthogonal to each other and are thus suitable for an instantaneous frequency analysis. The direct Hilbert spectrum is employed to illustrate the instantaneous time-frequency-energy distribution. Commendable agreement between the illustrations of the proposed direct Hilbert spectrum and the traditional Fourier spectrum was observed. This method provides robust identifications of vibration modes embedded in vibration processes, deemed to be an efficient means to obtain valuable instantaneous information.

  • Quorum-based algorithms are widely used for solving several problems in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and wireless sensor networks (WSN). Several quorum-based protocols are proposed for multi-hop ad hoc networks that each one has its pros and cons. Quorum-based protocol (QEC or QPS) is the first study in the asynchronous sleep scheduling protocols. At the time, most of the proposed protocols were non-adaptive ones. But nowadays, adaptive quorum-based protocols have gained increasing attention, because we need protocols which can change their quorum size adaptively with network conditions. In this paper, we first introduce the most popular quorum systems and explain quorum system properties and its performance criteria. Then, we present a comparative and comprehensive survey of the non-adaptive and adaptive quorum-based protocols which are subsequently discussed in depth. We also present the comparison of different quorum systems in terms of the expected quorum overlap size (EQOS) and active ratio. Finally, we summarize the pros and cons of current adaptive and non-adaptive quorum-based protocols.

  • Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have emerged as one of the new hot topics in wireless communications. WMNs have been suggested for use in situations in which some or all of the users are mobile or are located in inaccessible environments. Unconstrained transmission in a WMN may lead to the time overlap of two or more packet receptions, called collisions or interferences, resulting in damaged useless packets at the destination. There are two types of collisions; primary collision, due to the transmission of the stations which can hear each other, and hidden terminal collision, when stations outside the hearing range of each other transmit to the same receiving stations. For a WMN, direct collisions can be minimized by short propagation and carrier sense times. Thus, in this paper we only consider hidden terminal collision while neglecting direct collisions. To reduce or eliminate hidden terminal collision, code division multiple access (CDMA) protocols have been introduced. The collision-free property is guaranteed by the use of spread spectrum communication techniques and the proper assignment of orthogonal codes. Such codes share the fixed channel capacity allocated to the network in the design stage. Thus, it is very important to minimize the number of codes while achieving a proper transmission quality level in CDMA WMNs. In this paper, an efficient heuristic code assignment algorithm for eliminating hidden terminal collision in CDMA WMNs with general topology.

  • In keeping with the needs of the times for energy and labor saving and simplifying production processes, interests has been growing in warm forging. Moreover, it is interested in increasing the material usage and production amounts. To improve the productivity and material usage, it is studied the process design of warm forging for socket. Until now, socket is manufactured by hot forging in hammer. The percentage of material usage is under $60\%$ in hammer forging. On the other han4 the percentage can be increased over $90\%$ in warm forging. To change the process from hot forging to warm forging, process designs must be performed. In this time, by using the FEM package, DEFORM-3D, we could get the shape of 1st process and minimum sealing pressure. They are very essential design data to decrease the trial and error. Practically, the overlap defect could be detected and eliminated with design modification of rib height and fillet radius. Moreover, forging load and minimum sealing pressure was defined by the 3D FEM analysis.

  • Generally, wear plate is steel plate having improved surface contact strength and impact strength by surface hardening which is welded using materials with good corrosion resistance, wear resistance and thermal resistance property. CFP GMAW(Compound Filler Plate Gas Metal Arc Welding) is the cladding method using GMAW with the CFP, which is bound with waterglass, on the substrate. It has advantages of reducing compound powder loss, uniform penetration, and preventing hardness decrease. To develope mass production technique of CFP GMAW process for production of high quality wear plate, the method for controling shallow penetration and increasing productivity is required. In this study, twin torch method applied to CFP GMAW process for increasing productivity. And the method was developed by controling penetration control, CFP dry time, gas formation flux and water glass concentration. As a result, applying twin torch method to CFP GMAW process was possible and high quality wide bead could be made without overlap joint.

  • We present a new code for solving non-LTE radiative transfer problems in a general grid (RIG). RIG develops from RATRAN code (Hogerheijde & van der Tak 2000) using the Accelerated Monte-Carlo method, and it can cope with line overlap effect among multiple molecular and atomic species. In this algorithm we make grids in arbitrary coordinates adequate to the problem, but, on the other hand, photons propagate in the Cartesian coordinates. For spherical, cylindrical and other well defined coordinate, the problem of tracing photon's path reduces to solving simple quadratic equations. For example, the outflow in the star formation have high dynamic range in scales from a few AU to ~ 0.1 pc and have also cylindrical symmetry. So, we have used (r, ${\alpha}$) coordinate system, where r is the distance from the origin and ${\alpha}$ is z/ R2 in the cylindrical coordinate of (R,z). The (r, ${\alpha}$) coordinate realizes the density - power function of r - and temperature distributions of the problems with smaller numbers of grid than the cylindrical coordinate does, and the former consumes less time to solve the problems than the latter.

  • Upstream data frame of TDM-PON includes various types of overheads, and there exist guard bands between consecutive frames from different ONUs. Although they are indispensible in synchronization and performance, they cause bandwidth waste at the same time. To solve this problem, a new TDM-PON that uses two types of wavelengths in upstream transmission is suggested. By even distribution of two wavelengths among ONUs and overhead overlap between frames that use different wavelengths, almost 100% bandwidth efficiency could be achieved. A serializer that multiplexes signals from two wavelengths is implemented for this purpose.
