  • The influence of atmospheric aerosol on satellite ocean color data were evaluated using SeaWiFS monthly standard mapped image products. The atmospheric optical thickness (AOT) was increased in spring and summer, and it showed the strong positive correlation with remote sensing reflectance, normalized waterleaving radiance /solar irradiance, at 555 nm (Rrs555) which is a component of the satellite chlorophyll estimation. Such the high AOT and high Rrs555 pixels showed overestimation of satellite chlorophyll in spring, especially in the area which showed large phytoplankton absorption which 1s expressed by low remote sensing reflectance at 443, 490 and 510 nm (Rrs 443, Rrs490 and Rrs510).

  • Analytical and numerical modeling of soft or problematic soils stabilized with lime and cement require a number of soil parameters which are usually obtained from expensive and time-consuming laboratory experiments. The high shear strength of lime and cement stabilized soils make it extremely difficult to obtain high quality laboratory data in some cases. In this study, an alternative method is proposed, which uses the unconfined compressive strength and estimating functions available in literature to evaluate the shear strength parameters of the treated materials. The estimated properties were applied in finite element model to determine which estimating function is more appropriate for lime and cement treated granular soils. The results show that at the mid-range strength of the stabilized soils, most of applied functions have a good compatibility with laboratory conditions. However, application of some functions at lower or higher strengths would lead to underestimation or overestimation of the unconfined compressive strength.

  • A simple analytical procedure to analyze reinforced concrete (RC) beams with cracked section is proposed on the basis of the simplified moment-curvature relations of RC sections. Unlike previous analytical models which result in overestimation of stiffness and underestimation of structural deformations induced from assuming perfect-bond condition between steel and concrete, the proposed analytical procedure considers fixed-end rotation caused by anchorage. Furthermore, the proposed analytical procedure, compared with previous numerical models, promotes effectiveness of analysis by reflecting several factors which can influence nonlinearity of RC structure into the simplified moment-curvature relation. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results are conducted to establish the applicability of the proposed analytical procedure to the nonlinear analysis of RC structures.

  • A numerical study is performed to investigate the impacts of thermal loading on the vibration and buckling of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) conical shells. Thermo-mechanical properties of constituents are considered to be temperature-dependent. Considering the shear deformation theory, the energy functional is derived, and applying the variational differential quadrature (VDQ) method, the mass and stiffness matrices are obtained. The shear correction factors are accurately calculated by matching the shear strain energy obtained from an exact three-dimensional distribution of the transverse shear stresses and shear strain energy related to the first-order shear deformation theory. Numerical results reveal that considering temperature-dependent material properties plays an important role in predicting the thermally induced vibration of FG-CNTRC conical shells, and neglecting this effect leads to considerable overestimation of the stiffness of the structure.

  • It is a common sense that water is an old offender crashing our dream of achieving a good vacuum in an early time. Various techniques for accelerating the removal of water have been developed and utilized. However, we generally are not skilled in treating the water pumping in a physically proper manner. We are rather used to handle the situation of the water pumping just like considering a conventional air pumping. Under such an erroneous approach, we cannot help making an overestimation on the pumping capability of our vacuum system, and it leads to a big mismatch between the real operation timing and the planned process schedule. In this article, some main points concerning with the subject that a vacuum pumping is really a water pumping will be discussed.

  • In order to analysis the reason of sliding failure in embankment slope under construction in soft soil area, a model section located in Gimhae Region in Gyeongsangnam-Do, where the sliding failure had been occurred during embankment works in soft soil area, had been selected. This area had been firstly treated with the Pack Drain Method, and additional embankment works of 9.7 meters out of total 14 meters in thickness had been under construction. The results of analysis showed that the reason of sliding failure were overspeed in embankment construction and the overestimation of design factors in calculating strength of each layer of embankment and poor management and inaccuracy reading of measurement devices.

  • This thesis studied the scale effects on bearing capacity and settlement characteristics by using FEM. The conclusions of the study are as follows. 1) For sandy soil, the bearing capacity ratio increased in the form of logarithm as the foundation width increased. Hence application of static mechanic theory results in overestimation of the bearing capacity when the bearing capacity should be derived from plate loading test results. 2) In clayey soil, the characteristics of the bearing capacity associated with foundation width met Terzaghi's bearing capacity theory. 3) In sandy soil, the settlement ratio increased non-linearly as foundation width increased. However, in clayey soil, the settlement ratio increased linearly. 4) In ordinary soil, the foundation width - settlement ratio turned out to be close to that of sandy soil.

  • This Paper Proposes the FACTS site selection method using subtransmission system reduction. A general method which uses the sensitivity of the variation in voltage and reactive Power has been used to determine the location of shunt type FACTS device, but there is a difficulty to find a proper location due to the overestimation of the effect of sub-transmission systems. Therefore, there is a need to reduce sub-transmission system for finding an effective location of shunt type FACTS devices such as SVC(Static Var Compensator), STATCOM(Static Synchronous Compesator), and so on.

  • An improved procedure for earthquake resistant design of multistory building structures is proposed in this study. The effect of gravity load on seismic response of structures is evaluated through nonlinear dynamic analyses of a single story example structure. The presence of gravity load tends to initiate plastic hinge formation in earlier stage of a strong earthquake. However, the effect of gravity load seems to disapper as ground motion is getting stronger. And one of shortcomings in current earthquake resistant codes is overestimation of gravity load effects when earthquake load is applied at the same time so that it may leads to less inelastic deformation or structural damage in upper stories, and inelastic deformation is increased in lower stories. Based on these observation, an improved procedure for earthquake resistant design is derived by reducing the factor for gravity load and inceasing that for seismic load. Structures designed by the proposed design procedure turned out to have increased safety and stability against strong earthquakes.
