  • An algorithm for identifying track irregularities along the railway is presented. A baseline frequency-domain transfer function based on the equivalent SlSO(Single Input Single Output) model is defined at the intact condition between the measured track geometry of the ground displacement and the acceleration measured at a location in a train. The pre-defined transfer function at the intact condition is used inversely to predict track geometry in time with the currently measured acceleration at the same location in a train. The predicted track geometry is compared in time with that of the baseline values at the intact condition. The difference between them is calculated as an error in time and used to identify the track irregularities. An irregularity index is proposed as the ratio between the moving variance of the error at the current inspection and that at the intact condition. A 3D numerical simulation study has been carried out with a train model to verify the validity of the presented algorithm. In the analysis for the simulation, the track geometry has been considered as the displacement boundary condition varying in time.

  • LED arrays with pixel numbers of $3{\times}3$, $4{\times}4$, and $5{\times}5$ have been studied in this paper in order to enhance the optical output power and decrease heat dissipation of an AlGaInP-based light emitting diode display device (pixel size of $280{\times}280{\mu}m$) fabricated by micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems. Simulation results showed that the thermal resistances of the $3{\times}3$, $4{\times}4$, $5{\times}5$ arrays were $52^{\circ}C/W$, $69.7^{\circ}C/W$, and $84.3^{\circ}C/W$. The junction temperature was calculated by the peak wavelength shift method, which showed that the maximum value appears at the center pixel due to thermal crosstalk from neighboring pixels. The central temperature would be minimized with $40{\mu}m$ pixel pitch and $150{\mu}m$ substrate thickness as calculated by thermal modeling using finite element analysis. The modeling can be used to optimize parameters of highly integrated AlGaInP-based LED arrays fabricated by micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems technology.

  • In this paper, a small double ring resonator reflector was designed and fabricated using a polymer waveguide, and the measurement result was discussed. A widely tunable characteristic of the small double ring resonator caused by the Vernier effect, which results from the difference of the ring radii, was observed. The insertion loss of the double ring reflector was reduced by minimizing the device length to be as short as possible, and thus the output power and the SMSR (side mode suppression ratio) was greatly enhanced. The hybrid integrated laser based on the small double ring resonator reflector lased with the SMSR of 45 dB. In addition, the wide tuning range of 40 nm could be obtained by injecting a current of 30 mA to an electrode on top of the reflector.

  • Since the current licensed system codes for Non-LOCA safety analysis are applicable only for a specific type PWR, it is necessary to develope a new system analysis code applicable for all apes of PWRs. As a R&D program, KAERI is developing TASS code as an interactive and faster-than-real-time code for the NSSS transient simulation of both CE and Westinghouse plane. It is flexible tool for PWR analysis which gives the user complete control over the simulation through convenient input and output options. In this paper the code applicability to Westinghouse ape plants was verified by comparing the TASS prediction to plant data of loss of AC power and loss of load transients, and comparing to the prediction of RELAP5/MOD3 for feedline break, locked rotor, steam generator tube rupture and steam line break accidents.

  • The upturn of Korean nuclear power program can be considered to have started in early 70's while future plants for the construction of new nuclear power plane virtually came to a halt in United States. It is projected that power plant systems from combination of nuclear and coal fired types might shift to all coal fired type, considering the current trend of construction on the new Plants in the United States. However, with the depletion of natural resources, it is desirable to understand the utilization of two competitive utility technologies in terms of invested energy. Presented in this paper is a comparison between two systems, nuclear power plant and coal fired steam power plant in terms of energy investment. The method of comparison is Net Energy Analysis (NEA). In doing so, Input-Output Analysis (IOA) among industries and commodities is done. Using these information, net energy ratios are calculated and compared. NEA is conducted for power plants in U. S. because the availability of necessary data are limited in Korea. Although NEA does not offer conclusive solution, this method can work as a screening process in decision making. When considering energy systems, results from such analysis can be used as a general guideline.

  • In order to develop the driving pump for High-speed Cavitation Tunnel(HCT) which can experiment the super-cavitating submerged body, KRISO decided on the pump specification, designed the mixed-flow pump on the basis of the existing pump data and predicted the performance of the design pump using commercial CFD code (CFX-10). After the manufacture and installation of the driving pump, KRISO conducted the trial-test for HCT, analyzed the pump performance and compared trial-test results to those of design stage. The trial-test items for the HCT driving pump are measurements of output current/voltage at the inverter of the driving pump and the flow velocity in the HCT test section. The trial-test results showed the decrease in the flow rate of about 4.6% and the increase in pump head of about 8%, compared with those of the pump prediction. After the trial-test, the performance of the driving pump is predicted using CFX-10 with measured flowrates and pump rotational velocities. Though there is some difference between trial-test and prediction results due to inadequate motor data, it is thought that the tendency is reasonable. It is found that CFX-10 is useful to predict a mixed-flow pump.

  • This paper presents a DC-DC buck converter with a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) that can compensates for power efficiency degradation over a wide input range. Its switching frequency is kept at 2 MHz and the delay difference between the High side driver and the Low side driver can be minimized with respect to Process, Voltage and Temperature (PVT) variations by adopting the PLL. The operation mode of the proposed DC-DC buck converter is automatically changed to Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) or PWM frequency modes according to the load condition (heavy load or light load) while supporting a maximum load current of up to 1.2 A. The PWM frequency mode is used to extend the CCM region under the light load condition for the PWM operation. As a result, high efficiency can be achieved under the light load condition by the PWM frequency mode and the delay compensation with the PLL. The proposed DC-DC buck converter is fabricated with a $0.18{\mu}m$ BCD process, and the die area is $3.96mm^2$. It is implemented to have over a 90 % efficiency at an output voltage of 5 V when the input range is between 8 V and 20 V. As a result, the variation in the power efficiency is less than 1 % and the maximum efficiency of the proposed DC-DC buck converter with the PLL is 95.4 %.

  • The fungi associated with termites secrete enzymes such as laccase (multi-copper oxidase) that can degrade extracellular wood matrix. Laccase uses molecular oxygen as an electron acceptor to catalyze the degradation of organic compounds. Owing to its ability to transfer electrons from the cathodic electrode to molecular oxygen, laccase has the potential to be a biocatalyst on the surface of the cathodic electrode of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). In this study, a two-chamber MFC using the laccase-producing fungus Galactomyces reessii was investigated. The fungus cultured on coconut coir was placed in the cathode chamber, while an anaerobic microbial community was maintained in the anode chamber fed by industrial rubber wastewater and supplemented by sulfate and a pH buffer. The laccase-based biocathode MFC (lbMFC) produced the maximum open circuit voltage of 250 mV, output voltage of 145 mV (with a $1,000{\Omega}$ resistor), power density of $59mW/m^2$, and current density of $278mA/m^2$, and a 70% increase in half-cell potential. This study demonstrated the capability of laccase-producing yeast Galactomyces reessii as a biocatalyst on the cathode of the two-chamber lbMFC.

  • This paper has investigated the unreasonable pricing system for container cargo with special reference to inland transport since it is determined by administrative boundary without considering travelling distance. This research is primarily intended to improve the current pricing system by introducing a pricing support system about the container cargo in the country which applies GIS service area analysis to transportation data. Price simulation maps were generated to find out reasonable pricing strategy. Pricing alternative integrating travelling distance into administrative zoning brings about more desirable results than individual driving cost alone. The research can contribute to more reasonable pricing for the fuel consumption expense and serve as useful instruments for planning pricing system for container cargo. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference to increase the scientific and objective pricing for container cargo by overcoming serious constraints suffered from the past non-GIS-based approach.

  • This study is to examine constructs influencing the acceptance of SMEs for VSPs and the efficiency of VSPs, based on the two theories theory of reasoned action (TRA) and technology acceptance model (TAM) in the context of venture support program in Korea. This study concentrates on the government's venture support policy (VSP), namely the examination of the efficiency of current government VSPs in terms of preferential treatment for SMEs experiencing many other venture support programs (the EXP policy), and the reduction of documents/processes related to venture support programs for SMEs so that they are easily accessible and implementable (the EASE policy). Additionally, this paper will suggest an effective way to encourage SMEs to succeed by analyzing the fundamental reasons for their acceptance of VSPs to attain their long-term goals.
