To reduce leaf nitrate content, lettuce plants(Lactuca sativa var. capitata) were grown in deep flow culture. Nitrogen concentrations were controlled to 1 (6.Sme/$\ell$), 3/4 (4.9me/$\ell$), 2/4 (3.3me/$\ell$), and 1/4 strength(1.6me/$\ell$) of Yamaziki's nutrient solution from 7 days before harvest. The pH of nutrient solution was maintained at high level between 7.2 and 8.4. The values of pH and EC were increased with the nitrogen concentration in the nutrient solution. The nitrate contents were lowest at the treatment of 1/4 strength, but not significantly different among other treatments. The nitrate content was lower in outer leaves than in head leaves. The weight and diameter of head and shoot weight were lowest at the treatment of 1/4 strength.
Crystals in the woods and barks of Populus maximowiczii and Populus nigra ${\times}$ maximowiczii were examined by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and soft X-ray. Populus examined had the wetwood and the heartwood of Populus showed higher moisture content than in adjacent sapwood. The crystals can be detected clearly by the soft X-ray due to their higher densities than the wood. Crystals in xylem wood of Populus were found mainly at heartwood. However, they were concentrated in specific areas such as in color-stained area or along the specific annual rings. Crystals showed the highest occurrence around the pith. Within a growth ring the amount of crystals in earlywood was more abundant than in latewood. Crystals were observed mainly at vessels and fibers although they occurred at all kinds of cells in heartwood. Crystals in the bark were scattered evenly both in inner bark and in outer bark. Populus nigra${\times}$maximowiczii showed higher frequency of leaf knots than Populus maximowiczii.
For more than 50 years, satellite images have been used to monitor crop growth. Currently, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery is being assessed for analyzing within field spatial variability for agricultural precision management, because UAV imagery may be acquired quickly during critical periods of rapid crop growth. This study refers to the derivation of growth estimating equation for highland Kimchi cabbage using UAV derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and agro-meteorological factors. Anbandeok area in Gangneung, Gangwon-do, Korea is one of main districts producing highland Kimchi cabbage. UAV imagery was taken in the Anbandeok ten times from early June to early September. Meanwhile, three plant growth parameters, plant height (P.H.), leaf length (L.L.) and outer leaf number (L.N.), were measured for about 40 plants (ten plants per plot) for each ground survey. Six agro-meteorological factors include average temperature; maximum temperature; minimum temperature; accumulated temperature; rainfall and irradiation during growth period. The multiple linear regression models were suggested by using stepwise regression in the extraction of independent variables. As a result, $NDVI_{UAV}$ and rainfall in the model explain 93% of the P.H. and L.L. with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.22, 1.90 cm. And $NDVI_{UAV}$ and accumulated temperature in the model explain 86% of the L.N. with a RMSE of 4.29. These lead to the result that the characteristics of variations in highland Kimchi cabbage growth according to $NDVI_{UAV}$ and other agro-meteorological factors were well reflected in the model.
Eurycoma longifolia (pasak bumi) is a popular medicinal plant in Indonesia and is widely used in various products. Its high economic value has caused illegal harvesting and product falsification. Using molecular techniques, the authentication and traceability of E. longifolia derivatives can be controlled to ensure consumer safety. Therefore, this study aimed to authenticate the products and derivatives of E. longifolia (pasak bumi) produced, marketed, and consumed in Indonesia using molecular identification techniques. Genomic DNA from 37 leaf samples collected from the Sumatran mainland and the Riau Islands and six E. longifolia products were amplified and sequenced using trnL-trnF and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. The results revealed that all leaf samples were indeed E. longifolia based on the markers used, with the six products, only the herbal tea product (sample code TCPB) was most likely derived from E. longifolia based on the two regions, suggesting that not all products labelled as E. longifolia in the market are authentic. The results also indicated that several other plants species are used as substitutes or adulterants, including Simaba spp., Simarouba spp., Homalolepis spp., Vernonia gigantea, Elephantopus scaber, Gymnanthemum amygdalinum, Cyanthillium spp., Potentilla lineata, Ailanthus altissima, Geijera paniculata, Hannoa chlorantha, and Dalbergia spp. Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria were also identified in this study on the outer wooden cup of E. longifolia products. Therefore, this molecular approach is effective in identifying the authenticity of E. longifolia products, with trnL-trnF and ITS as the recommended DNA markers.

Sound absorption characteristics of membrane system which are used in stadiums and arenas were investigated. Theoretical studies on acoustic properties of single and double leaf permeable membrane conducted. Also, experimental studies on sound absorption characteristics of combined membrane system that is composed of outer and inner membrane material were conducted. In this study, sound absorption characteristics of each membrane were investigated by experiments in reverberation chamber. 4 types of permeable membranes and a non-permeable membrane were used for experiments. Air space behind membrane material and tension on the membrane was varied. Sound absorption performance of permeable membrane materials was confirmed. As increasing air space behind the membrane material, sound absorption coefficient was increased. In a resonance absorption frequency band sound absorption coefficient varied more dramatically. Sound absorption characteristics were flat in mid and high frequency range and sound absorption coefficient was from 0,3 to 0,5. Also sound absorption coefficient was increased by the increment of surface density and air permeability of membrane. However, over the certain value of air permeability, sound absorption coefficient was decreased. These results can be used as design factors and method for the room acoustic design of dome-stadiums and large free-form buildings.

A total of 67 watermelon accessions which include 37 accessions from Korean and 27 accessions from Turkish germplasm and 3 accessions of other related species from USA were investigated for morphological characteristics. The UPOV descriptor list for 56 characters (6 seedlings, 4 plants, 11 leaves, 5 flowers, 23 fruits and 7 seeds) was used in characterization. In addition, eight quantitative characters, hypocotyl length, cotyledon width, cotyledon length, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, thickness of outer layer of pericarp and soluble solid content were also measured. The 56 qualitatively scored characters were analyzed by principle coordinate analysis (PCoA) while the eight quantitative ones were subjected to principle component analysis (PCA). Morphological characterization result demonstrated that the accessions displayed high morphological diversity(how much percent?). A high level of phenotypic diversity was observed from the results of morphological characterization. However, plant growth habit and leaf blade flecking showed constant characters for all of the accessions. The Korean and Turkish watermelon genotypes are diverse groups and can be separated by both multivariate analysis of morphological characters although the grouping was more apparent in PCoS results.
While preparing a floristic study of Korean hepatics, we discovered the 4 unrecorded species Alobiellopsis parvifolius, Calypogeia japonica, Hattoria yakushimensis and Nardia subclavata. A. parvifolius is often confused with Solenostoma fusiforme (Steph.) Amak. in appearance, but the former differs by occasional presence of underleaves and a large hyaline outer cells of stem. C. japonica is similar to C. tosana (Steph.) Steph. The former, however, is separated from the latter by 2-3 biconcentric oil-bodies per cell compared to 3-5 grape oil-bodies per cell. H. yakushimensis is a monotypic genus based on a Japanese species. This genus is characterized by unlobed, closely imbricate leaves with margins distinctly incurved and usually pigmented with a reddish purple color. N. subclavata is similar to N. assamica (Mitt.) Amakawa in large underleaves and globular oil-bodies. The former, however, is separated from the latter by convex trigones versus concave trigones, smooth cuticles versus smooth to verrucose cuticles, and oil-bodies occurring in each cell versus occurring in approximately half or fewer leaf cells.

In this paper, we propose a novel compact surveillance throwing robot which has an omnidirectional shock absorption mechanism and an active control part of wheel treads to stabilize the dynamic posture of a miniature sphere type throwing robot. This throwing robot, which weighs 1.14kg and is 110mm in height, is designed in a spherical shape to be easily grabbed for throwing. Also, the omnidirectional shock absorbing aspect is designed using several leaf springs connected with inner and outer wheels. The wheel treads control part consists of a link mechanism. Through the field experiments, this robot is validated to withstand higher than 17Ns of omnidirectional impulse and increase the stabilized max speed three times from 11 rad/s to 33rad/s by increasing wheel treads.

The vigor condition of trees is an important indicator for the management of urban forested area. But difficulties in how to assess the tree vigor condition still remain. Previous efforts were limited in the 1) measurement of single indicator rather than using multiple indices, 2) purpose-oriented measurement such as for air-pollution effect or specific pathological symptom, and 3) ordinal-scale evaluations by field crews 4) despite human errors based on his/her experiences or prior knowledge. Therefore, this study attempted to develop a quantitative and objective methodology for assessing tree vigor condition, by measuring multiple modules and building the profile inventory. Furthermore, the possibility and limitations were discussed in terms of schematic frames describing tree vigor condition. The vigor condition of 56 flowering cherry plants in urban park were assessed by in-situ measurements of following eight items; growth of crown(Gc), growth of shoots, individual tree volume(Vol), plant area index, woody area index, leaf area index, leaf chlorophyll content(Lc) and leaf water content(Lw). For validation, these measurements were compared with the ranks of holistic tree vigor condition, which were visually assessed using a 4-point grading scale based on the expert's knowledge. As a result, the measures of each evaluation item successfully highlighted a variety of aspects in tree vigor condition, including the states of both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic parts. The variation in the results depending on evaluated parts was shown within an individual tree, even though the broad agreement among the results was found. The result of correlation analysis between the tested measurements and 4-point visual assessment, demonstrated that the state of water-stressed foliage of the season (Lw) or the development of plant materials since sapling phase (Vol) could be better viewed from the outer appearance of trees than other symptoms. But only based on the visual assessment, it may be difficult to detect the quality of photosynthesis (Lc) or the recent trend in growth of trees (Gc). To make this methodology simplified for the broad-scale application, the tested eight measurements could be integrated into two components by principal component analysis, which was labelled with 'the amount of plant materials' and 'vigor trend', respectively. In addition, the use of these quantitative and multi-scale indicators underlies the importance of assessing various aspects of tree vigor condition, taking into account the response(s) on different time and spatial scale of pressure(s) shown in each evaluated module. Future study should be advanced for various species at diverse developing stages and environment, and the application to wide areas at a periodic manner.

To increase the consumption of head-type kimchi cabbage leaves as fresh food ingredients, the physicochemical composition was investigated depending on leaf parts. Kimchi cabbage leaves were divided into three portions, such as outer (L1), mid (L2), and inner (L3), and their proximate compositions were determined along with dietary fiber, free sugar, organic acid, free amino acid, and mineral contents. Contents of moisture, crude protein, and crude fat were highest in L1, whereas contents of crude ash and carbohydrate were highest in L3 (P<0.05). Calories ranged 24.5~26.5 kcal/100 g with no significant difference among leaf parts, and dietary fiber content of L1 was highest (P<0.05). Fructose, glucose, and sucrose contents were highest in L3 (P<0.05). Citric acid, malic acid, and succinic acid were detected, and contents of citric acid and malic acid were highest in L3, in contrast, succinic acid was highest in L1 (P<0.05). Glutamic acid, constituting over 30% of the total free amino acid contents, was highest in L3, whereas ${\gamma}-aminobutyric$ acid contents were highest in L1 (P<0.05). K, Na, Ca, and Mg were the major minerals in head-type kimchi cabbage, and their contents showed no significant differences (P<0.05). It can be proposed that marketing of head-type kimchi cabbage as a fresh-cut vegetable could be enhanced due to the different quality characteristics of its leaf parts.
