  • Flow in the blood sac of the Korean artificial heart is numerically simulated by finite element method. Fluid-structure interaction algorithm is employed to compute the 3D blood flow interacting with the sac material. The motion of the actuator is simplified by a time-varying pressure boundary condition imposed on the outer surface of the sac. Numerical solutions show that there are a strong flow into the outlet and a stagnation flow near the inlet during systole. Shear stress distribution is also delineated to assess the possibility of thrombus formation.

  • A numerical study for the flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics of the evaporating tube with the films flowing down on both the inside and outside tube walls has been carried out. The condensation occurs along the outside wall while the evaporation occurs at the free surface of the inside film. The transport equations for momentum and energy are parabolized by the boundary-layer approximation and solved by using the marching technique. The calculation domain of 2 film flow regions (evaporating and condensation films at the inside and outside tube wall respectively) and tube wall is solved simultaneously. The coupling technique for the problem with the 3 different regions and the 2 interfaces of them has been developed to calculate the temperature field. The velocity and temperature fields and the amount of the condensed and evaporated mass as well as the position where the evaporating film is completely dried out are successfully predicted for various inside pressures and inside film inlet flow rates.

  • The main objective of the present paper is to study the effect of the yield criterion on the magnitude of the strain rate and plastic work rate intensity factors in axisymmetric flow of isotropic incompressible rigid perfectly plastic material by means of a problem permitting a closed-form solution. The boundary value problem consisting of the axisymmetric deformation of a plastic tube is solved. The outer surface of the tube contracts. The radius of the inner surface does not change. The material of the tube obeys quite a general yield criterion and its associated flow rule. The maximum friction law is assumed at the inner surface of the tube. Therefore, the velocity field is singular near this surface. In particular, the strain rate and plastic work rate intensity factors are derived from the solution. It is shown that the strain rate intensity factor does not depend on the yield criterion but the plastic work rate intensity factor does.

  • The numerical procedure has been developed for simulating incompressible viscous flow around a turbine stage with rotor-stator interaction. This study solves 2-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. The Marker-and-Cell concept is applied to efficiently solve continuity equation. To impose an accurate boundary condition, O-H multiblocked grid system is generated. O-type grid and H-type grid is generated near and outer rotor-stator The cubic-spline interpolation is applied to handle a relative motion of a rotor to the stator. Turbulent flows have been modeled by the Baldwin- Lomax turbulent model. To validate present procedure, the time averaged pressure coefficients around the rotor and stator are compared with experiment and a good agreement obtained.

  • Double facades are built to allow natural ventilation in high rise buildings and buildings with high outside noise level. In high rise Buildings the gains in summer can be reduced by sufficient sun protection devices placed outside the rooms in the ventilated space between the inner and outer facade. To evaluate the energetic performance, three buildings with double facade were monitored for at least one year (Siemens Building in Dortmund/Germany, Victoria Insurance Company in Duesseldorf/Germany and RWE Tower in Essen/Germany). The results document the indoor climate, the boundary conditions for further planning and the possibilities for high rise buildings without or with little cooling facilities.

  • This paper investigates wave loads of ships that suffer sinkage due to flood in a compartment caused by damage on the side of the hull. By analyzing ships with various sizesof damage opening, the influence of opening size on ship response is investigated. The motion of the damaged ship is analyzed by using the boundary element method, based on three-dimensional potential theory, considering hydrodynamic pressure in the flooded compartments. The shear forces, bending moments and torsional moments are calculated by the direct integration of the three dimensional hydrodynamic pressure on the outer and inner hulls. A RORO passenger ship with length of 174.8 m is considered in the numerical example, and results for wave loads are discussed.

  • The linear instability of reacting shear flow is analyzed with special emphasis on the effects of the heat release and variable transport properties. Both analytic profiles and laminar solutions of the boundary-layer equations are used as base flows. The growth rates of the instabilities are sensitive to the laminar profiles, differing by more than a factor of 2 according to which profile is used. Thus, it is important to base the analysis on accurate laminar profiles. Accounting for variable transport properties also changes the mean profiles considerably, and so including them in the computation of the laminar profiles is equally important. At larger heat release, two modes that are stronger in the outer part of the shear layer have the highest growth rates; they also have shorter wavelengths than the center mode.

  • This paper analyzes static and transient response characteristics of a permanent magnet type stepping motor with claw poles using three-dimensional finite element method. The outer diameter of the stepping motor to be analyzed is approximately 6 mm. In this paper we analyzes only 2 poles of the stepping motor, which has 10 magnetic poles made up of NdFeB material, using periodic boundary condition. We clarify transient response and static torque charateristics using Maxwell 3D and Matlab Simulink.

  • The turbo chiller uses centrifugal compressor, which operates at about 14500 rpm. Due to the high rpm of the impeller, the noise of chiller makes one of the serious problems. The possibility of the sound reduction by using absorbing material is studied in this paper. The generated sound propagates through the duct and then radiates to the outer field. So, the use of sound absorption material inside the duct is one of the effective methods. To study the effect of location of the material, we use Boundary Element Method to analyze the sound field inside the duct system. Numerical study shows the highest sound pressure region is near the elbow of curved duct. From the analysis, it is also shown that the elbow duct is the main radiator of noise and sound absorption treatment of this duct results noise reduction of the highest noise level at BPF and high frequency region.

  • This paper presents the free vibration analysis of a circular plate with a concentric square hole. The boundary condition is the edge of the square hole is free and the outer circular plate is simply supported. Due to the geometric abnormality, this analysis does not permit an exact solution. The present problem deals with the numerical calculation of the natural frequencies and mode shapes of vibration of the structure by independent coordinate coupling method(ICCM). The numerical results show the efficacy of the ICCM and changes in natural frequencies and modes due to the square hole size.
