  • Purpose : The purpose of this pilot experiment was to evaluate early bone response in two types of coated implants using the rabbit tibia model. Materials and Methods : Screw type titanium implants manufactured with a calcium metaphosphate (CMP) coating and hydroxyapatite (HA) coating were placed in the tibiae of 3 New Zealand White rabbits. The bone responses at 2 weeks after insertion were evaluated and compared by histomorphometry. Results : There was no significant difference in bone-to-implant contact between the groups (P>.05). However, some qualitative differences on histologic views were found. Conclusions : CMP-coating is suggested to be the preferred candidate for fast osseointegration over HAcoating.

  • Tooth loss is very a very common problem; therefore, the use of dental implants is also a common practice. Although research on dental implant designs, materials and techniques has increased in the past few years and is expected to expand in the future, there is still a lot of work involved in the use of better biomaterials, implant design, surface modification and functionalization of surfaces to improve the long-term outcomes of the treatment. This paper provides a brief history and evolution of dental implants. It also describes the types of implants that have been developed, and the parameters that are presently used in the design of dental implants. Finally, it describes the trends that are employed to improve dental implant surfaces, and current technologies used for the analysis and design of the implants.

  • The use of dental implants has become a mainstay of rehabilitative and restorative dentistry. With an impressive clinical success rate, there remain a few minor clinical issues with the use of implants such as peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. The use of laser technology with implants has a fascinating breadth of applications, beginning from their precision manufacturing to clinical uses for surgical site preparation, reducing pain and inflammation, and promoting osseointegration and tissue regeneration. This latter aspect is the focus of this review, which outlines various studies of implants and laser therapy in animal models. The use of low level light therapy or photobiomodulation has demonstrated its efficacy in these studies. Besides more research studies to understand its molecular mechanisms, significant efforts are needed to standardize the clinical dosing and delivery protocols for laser therapy to ensure the maximal efficacy and safety of this potent clinical tool for photobiomodulation.

  • In cases of severe alveolar bone atrophy in the posterior maxillary area, which has only a thin sinus floor, the autogenous tooth bone graft block (ABTB) was used to wrap the implant to enhance its primary stability and osseointegration in the sinus. These cases with four years of clinical follow-up demonstrate the applicability of the ABTB in maxillary sinus membrane elevation to improve the outcomes of implant placement.

  • This paper reports histologic and histomorphometric results concerning bone healing around vent area of 16 titanium plasma sprayed IMZ implants in rabbit femurs. Bone contact around the implants 8 weeks after placement showed a great deal of variability from 14.32% to 65.94% and mean total bone contact was 33.96%. The mean percent amount of bone contact was 43.68% in inner surface of vent and 27.79% in outer surface. Histologic examination of horizontal sections of vent area showed direct contact with living lamellar bone and some woven bone. The implants surface area not in contact with bone was in contact with collagenous connective tissue. But there was no sign of foreign-body reaction.

  • OBJECTIVE The purpose of clinical study was to evaluate the survival of dental implants used in restoring patients with implant supported removable partial dentures (ISRPDs) of different configurations. MATERIALS AND METHODS The sample consisted of 20 consecutively treated partially edentulous patients, who, between 2003 and 2008, had a total of 84implants placed in different arch sites and who were treated with ISRPDs. The mean age was 57 years. Mean follow up time from delivery of ISRPDs was 3 years 2 months (range, 1 to 6 years). Osseointegration failure, postoperative complication of dental prosthesis, and the success rate of ISRPDs were retrospectively evaluated using clinical and radiographic examination. RESULT The overall implant survival rate was 100%. During follow up, the one clasp of removable partial denture was broken in 1 year11 months after prosthesis delivery. All patients were satisfied with their prosthesis. CONCLUSIONS Implant supported removable partial dentures could serve as favorable prognosis. Careful patient selection, with an appropriate maintenance and recall system, is recommended to obtain satisfactory results.

  • Implants are typically placed after performing ridge expansion by inserting screws of gradually increasing thickness and good clinical outcomes are often obtained. We placed 11 implants in 6 patients, and one implant failed during osseointegration but it was replaced immediately after removal and successful prosthetic treatments were completed. During these surgeries, buccal cortical plate complete fractures do not occur. Inserting screws for ridge expansion is a successful and predictable technique for implant placement in narrow alveolar bone.

  • Statement of problem. To work the economic limitation of dental implant usage, some types of domestic implant have been developing. But, there have been seldom reported about the clinical success rate of them as yet. Purpose. The aim of this retrospective multicenter study was to evaluate the performance of CSM implants(CSM company, Daegu, Korea). Material and methods. Thirty-five patients were rehabilitated with 150 CSM implants in this multicenter study. Results. The success rate was 96.2%. CSM Titanium fixtures can obtain slightly higher success rate when a cover screw was not used for implant installation than when used. However it doesn't show significant difference(p=.7615, Fisher's Exact test). Conclusion. This multicenter retrospective study demonstrated the efficacy of the CSM implant in the treatment of variety of clinical manifestation of tooth loss. And it can be assumed that whether a cover screw is used or not should no influence on the osseointegration.
