  • In this paper, a 0.5~4 GHz frequency synthesizer having good phase noise performance is proposed. Wideband output frequencies of the synthesizer were synthesized using DDS(Direct Digital Synthesizer) and analog direct frequency synthesis technology in order to obtain fast settling time. Also in order to get good phase noise performance, 2.4 GHz DDS clock was generated by VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) which was locked by the 100 MHz reference oscillator using SPD(Sample Phase Detector). The phase noise performance of wideband frequency synthesizer was estimated and the results were compared with the measured ones. The measured phase noise of the frequency synthesizer was less then -121 dBc @ 100 kHz at 4 GHz.

  • In this paper, we showed the phase noise of voltage controlled oscillator(VCO) can be radically improved using FLL(Frequency Locked Loop). At first, a 5 GHz VCO is fabricated using a hair-pin resonator. The fabricated VCO shows a phase noise of -53.1 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz frequency offset. In order to improve the phase noise of the fabricated VCO, a FLL is constructed using the feedback loop that consists of the VCO, a frequency detector composed of 5 GHz resonator, loop-filter, and level shifter. The fabricated FLL is designed to oscillate at a frequency of 5 GHz, and its measured phase noise is about -120.6 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz offset frequency. As a result, the phase noise of VCO can be radically improved by about 67.5 dB applying FLL. In addition, the measured phase noise performance is close to that of crystal oscillator.

  • A frequency stable and tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) incorporating an optical phase shifter and a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PS-FBG) is designed and analyzed. The frequency tunability of the OEO can be realized by using a tunable microwave photonic bandpass filter consisting of a PS-FBG, a phase modulator. The optical phase compensation loop is used to compensate for the phase variations of the RF signal from the OEO by adjusting an optical phase shifter. Simulation results demonstrate that the output RF signals of the OEO can be tuned in a frequency range of 118 MHz to 24.092 GHz. When the ambient temperature fluctuates within ±3.9 ℃, the frequency drifts of the output RF signals are less than 68 Hz, the side-mode suppression ratios are more than 69.39 dB, and the phase noise is less than -92.49 dBc/Hz at a 10 kHz offset frequency.

  • In this paper, a new design method of a tunable oscillator using a suspended-stripline resonator is presented. The negative resistance of an FET mounted on microstrip line(MSL) is combined with a high Q suspended-stripline(SSL) resonator to produce a tunable oscillator with good phase noise. The new MSL-SSL transition facilitates the easy connection between the MSL-based circuits and the SSL module. The proposed oscillator is also frequency-tunable using a tuner located on the top of the SSL housing. The measured phase noise of the implemented oscillator at 3.37 GHz is -108.03 dBc@100 kHz and -135.09 dBc@1 MHz with 50 MHz of frequency tuning.

  • In this paper, oscillator with compact hairpin resonator is used to design the local oscillator of X-band radar system. The proposed hairpin resonator is minimized by increasing capacitance of line end of conventional one. By this method, size can be minimized about 40% compared with the conventional resonator and also can improve phase noise characteristic. The result of oscillator using proposed hairpin resonator is measured in oscillating frequency of 9.05 GHz, output power of 2.47 dBm, and phase noise of -101.4 dBc/Hz. The fabricated oscillator in this paper can minimize design and it's planar structure makes it easy to design MMIC.

  • The 3.2~6.5 GHz wideband YTO(YIG Tuned Oscillator) module is designed, fabricated and measured. To improve the phase noise characteristic of the YTO module, offset PLL(Phase Locked Loop) structure with sampling mixer is applied. This YTO module is composed of sampling mixer, phase detector, loop filter, current driver, and YTO. The phase noise of the fabricated YTO module is measured as -100 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset frequency, which approximates the predicted result at the center frequency of 4.5 GHz. This YTO module presents over 10 dB improved phase noise compared to conventional PLL module from operating frequency.

  • In this paper, mutually coupled oscillator is employed to improve phase noise. Mutually coupled structure oscillator couples two oscillator's phase shifted output signals, that is fabricated using teflon board which has dielectric constant of 2.5 and Surface Mount Gallium Arsenide FET devices. And this paper proposed the structure to bias adjustment for the phase condition of mutually couples. When one oscillator has bias point of 4.4 V and 37 mA, it's output signal has phase noise characteristic of -96.37 dBc(@9305 MHz, offset frequency 100 KHz), -73.46 dBc(10 kHz). and After it's output signal mutually coupled the other's output signal that has bias point of 8.1 V and 69 mA, it has superior phase noise characteristic of -106.7 dBc(@9305 MHz, offset frequency 100 kHz), -81 dBc(10 kHz).

  • In this paper, a K-band local oscillator composed of a VCDRO(Voltage Controlled Dielectric Resonator Oscillator), GaAs MESFET, and Reflector type frequency doubler has been designed and fabricated. TO obtain a good phase noise performance of a VCDRO, a active device was selected with a low noise figure and a low flicker noise MESFET and a dielectric resonator was used for selecting stable and high oscillation frequency. Especially, to have a higher conversion gain than a conventional doubler as well as a good harmonic suppression performance with circuit size reduced a doubler structure was employed as the Reflector type composed of a reflector and a open stub of quarter wave length for rejecting the unwanted harmonics. The measured results of fabricated oscillator show that the output power was 5.8 dBm at center frequency 12.05 GHz and harmonic suppression -37.98 dBc, Phase noise -114 dBc at 100 KHz offset frequency, respectively, and measured results show of fabricated frequency doubler, the output power at 5.8 dBm of input power is 1.755 dBm conversion gain 1.482 dB, harmonic suppression -33.09 dBc, phase noise -98.23 dBc at 100 KHz offset frequency, respectively. This oscillator could be available to a local oscillator in K-band which used frequency doubler techniques.

  • The phase noise reduction in a configuration of the HEMT oscillator with a dielectric resonator coupled by a quarter-wavelength impedance inverter is investigated. Two HEMT oscillators for a satellite payload system are manufactured in the same configuration except for the coupling configuration of the dielectric resonator (DR) in order to empirically demonstrate the phase noise reduction. Experimental result shows that a phase noise reduction by 14 dB can be enhanced by increasing the characteristic impedance of a coupling microstrip impedance inverter.

  • As the integration of circuit components increases steadily, various EMS(Electromagnetic Susceptibility) problems have emerged from integrated circuits and electrical systems. The electromagnetic susceptibility of VCOs(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) is especially critical in RF systems. Therefore, in this paper, through the phase noise theory that models electrical oscillators as linear time variant systems, the EMS characteristics of representative VCO -ring VCO and LC VCO- with 1.2 GHz of reference oscillating frequency are analyzed under the existence of the electromagnetic noise coupled in power supply. An simulation algorithm is developed to extract impulse response function based on the phase noise theory. When there is no supply noise, the magnitude of the jitter of two oscillators were similar to around 2.1 ps, but in presence of supply noise, the jitter was significantly lower in LC VCOs than ring VCOs.
