  • Experiments in methane-air low strain rate counterflow diffusion flames diluted with nitrogen have been conducted to study the behavior of flame extinction and edge flame oscillation in which lateral conduction heat loss in addition to radiative heat loss could be remarkable at low global strain rates. Onset conditions of edge flame oscillation and flame oscillation modes are also provided with global strain rate. It is seen that flame length is closely relevant to lateral heat loss, and this affects flame extinction and edge flame oscillation. Edge flame oscillations in low strain rate flames are categorized into three: a growing oscillation mode, a decaying oscillation mode, and a harmonic oscillation mode. The regime of flame oscillation is also provided at low strain rate flames.

  • Experiments in low strain rate methane-air counterflow diffusion flames diluted with $CO_2$ have been conducted to investigate the flame extinction behavior and edge flame oscillation The critical mole fraction at flame extinction is examined in terms of velocity ratio and global strain rate. Onset conditions of the edge flame oscillation and the relevant modes are also provided with global strain rate. It is observed that flame length is intimately relevant to lateral heat loss, and this affects flame extinction and edge flame oscillation considerably. Edge flame oscillations are categorized into three: a growing-, a decaying-, and a harmonic-oscillation mode.

  • Complex viscosities of dense alumina slurries over 45% volume density measured with the oscillating method were correlated well with Casson model. Among several monosaccharides and disaccharides studied here, fructose and sucrose showed good rheological properties in making dense alumina slurry plastic compared to other monosaccharides and disaccharides like glucose, galactose, arabinose, xylose and maltose. Sucrose content or additional water content in dense alumina slurry with sucrose contributed to the plasticity of the slurries.

  • We consider the common and different results between the oscillation of galloping cable and the oscillation of suspension bridge cable through the long-term behavior. Numerical results are presented by using the second-order Runge-Kutta method under various initial conditions. There appeared to be nonlinear forms. Periodicity, symmetry, and longitudinality are differently appeared in two kinds of cables.

  • We have developed an finite-difference time-domain program that can analyze photonic devices with gain and/or dispersion. As an example, a two-dimensional photonic-crystal laser is simulated. The simulation can show the relaxation oscillation behavior at extremely high current injection.

  • Present study simulates oscillatory supersonic impinging jet flows using the axisymmetric Navier-Stokes code. To capture the salient features of flow oscillation and overcome the divergence during the initial transient period, several tests have been conducted for the grid and time step sizes. The results also show that the effects of the inlet flow condition at the nozzle exit and turbulence on the oscillatory behavior of supersonic impinging jets are negligible. Frequencies of the surface pressure oscillation obtained by the selected numerical method are in good accord with the measured impinging tones for various cases of nozzle-to-plate distance. Two seemingly different staging behaviors with nozzle-to-plate distance and nozzle pressure variations are found to correlate well if the frequency and distance are normalized by the length of the first shock cell.

  • This paper is concerned with the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the second-order nonlinear perturbed dynamic equation $$(r(t)x^{\Delta}(t))^{\Delta}\;+\;F(t,\;x^{\sigma}))=G(t,\;x^{\sigma},\;(x^{\Delta})^{\sigma})$$ on a time scale $\mathbb{T}$. By using a new technique we establish some sufficient conditions which ensure that every solution oscillates or converges to zero. Our results improve the known oscillation results on the literature for the perturbed dynamic equations on time scales. Some examples illustrating our main results are given.

  • This report describes the effect of optical delay on the suppression of the power transient excursion in a combined gain-controlled erbium-doped fiber amplifier with an internal optical feedback loop (OFL). A simple homogeneous model showed that the optical delay caused a phase change in the oscillation of the surviving and laser channels, which resulted in a reduction of the overall power transient excursion. In addition to the reduction, a real system with a 1528.7-nm OFL shifted the oscillation upward or downward according to channel removal or addition, whereas another one with a 1560.9-nm OFL did not. This different transient behavior reflected a control-wavelength dependence on optical automatic gain control, where spectral-hole burning dominated over relaxation oscillation for 1528.7 nm, and vice versa for 1560.9 nm.

  • 1.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ DFB with absorption grating of 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ InGaAsP layer was fabricated. This new type of DFB laser shows self-plusation for DC operation. At low level of injection the relation between the pulsation frequency and the injection current shows similar behavior with the relaxation oscillation of ordinary laser and at high level of injection the pulsation frequency decreases compared to the relaxation oscillation. Period doubling, period 3 and 4 were observed for AC modulation. In case of period doubling the waveform shows only one pulse within a period without any accompanying subsidiary pulses and the oscillation frequency was quite stable. The pulse widths as short as 58.5 ps was achieved with AC modulation. We propose the time division multiplexing application of this kind of DFB laser.
