  • Stress and displacement fields of a propagating Mode III crack in an orthotropic functionally gradient material (OFGM), which has (1) linear variation of shear modulus with a constant density, and (2) an exponential variation of shear modulus and density, are derived. The equations of motion in OFGM are developed and solution to the displacement and stress fields fer a propagating crack at constant speed though an asymptotic analysis. The stress terms associated with $\gamma^{-1/2}\;and\;\gamma^{0}$ are not affected by the FGM constant $\zeta$ which is nonhomogeneous parameter, only on the higher order terms, the influences of nonhomogeneity on the stress are explicitly brought out. When the FGM constant $\zeta\;is\;zero\;or\;\gamma{\rightarrow}0$, the fields for OFGM are almost same as the those for homogeneous orthotropic material. Using the stress components, the effects of nonhomogeneity on stress components are discussed.

  • In the present paper, a simple analytical model is developed based on a new refined parabolic shear deformation theory (RPSDT) for free vibration and buckling analysis of orthotropic rectangular plates with simply supported boundary conditions. The displacement field is simpler than those of other higher-order theories since it is modeled with only two unknowns and accounts for a parabolic distribution of the transverse shear stress through the plate thickness. The governing differential equations related to the present theory are obtained from the principle of virtual work, while the solution of the eigenvalue problem is achieved by assuming a Navier technique in the form of a double trigonometric series that satisfy the edge boundary conditions of the plate. Numerical results are presented and compared with previously published results for orthotropic rectangular plates in order to verify the precision of the proposed analytical model and to assess the impacts of several parameters such as the modulus ratio, the side-to-thickness ratio and the geometric ratio on natural frequencies and critical buckling loads. From these results, it can be concluded that the present computations are in excellent agreement with the other higher-order theories.

  • In this study, we proposed a method to replace the solid finite element model of the boiler membrane wall for coal-fired power plants using an equivalent shell model. The application of a bending load to the membrane wall creates greater displacement at both ends of the central portion when compared with the middle when an isotropic elastic constant is used in the shell model. This is inconsistent with the results of the solid model where the central portion is uniformly deformed. Here, we presented a method to determine the orthotropic elastic constants of the shell model in terms of bending stiffness and vibration characteristics to solve this problem. Our analysis of the orthotropic shell model showed that the error ratio was 0.9% for the maximum displacement due to the bending load, 0.3% for the first natural frequency, and 2.5% for the second natural frequency when compared with the solid model. In conclusion, a complicated boiler membrane wall composed of a large number of pipes and fins can be replaced with a simple shell model that shows equivalent bending stiffness and vibration characteristics using our proposed method.

  • Recently, the bridges become greater according to development of a construction technology. This phenomenon requires long span bridge, so that increases the dead weight. The orthotropic steel deck bridges have much advantages such as the light dead weight and the reduction of construction period. And almost whole process of carried out is manufactured at factory, so it can cause the increase of quality authoritativeness. But orthotropic steel deck bridge is consist of structure by welding, it can not avoid a lot of welding jobs, defects and transformation by welding are becoming problem accordingly. Specially, topical stress concentration phenomenon in cross connection area of longitudinal and transverse rib causes fatigue failure. The Bulkhead Plate for prevention of this stress concentration phenomenon was applied by changing the orthotropic steel deck of Williamsburg bridge in USA. But, it is principle that a Bulkhead Plate is not established in the domestic design standard. Therefore, it is estimated that the study for installation of Bulkhead Plate is needed. This treatise with considering these circumstances proves efficiency of Bulkhead Plate and will be presented optimal design details through finite element analysis according to change the geometrical of Bulkhead Plate and tile cross-connection area of longitudinal and transverse rib.

  • In this paper result of an analytical investigation pertaining to the elastic buckling behavior of orthotropic plate under combined in-plane shear and bending forces is presented. The existing analytical solution developed for the isotropic plates is extended so that the orthotropic material properties can be taken into account in the buckling analysis of web plate. For the solution of the problems Rayleigh-Ritz method is employed. Graphical form of results for finding the elastic buckling strength of orthotropic plate under combined in-plane shear and bending forces is presented. Brief discussion on the design criteria for the shear and bending interaction is also presented.

  • The paper studies the fluid flow profile contained between the orthotropic plate and rigid wall under the action of the moving load on the plate and main attention is focused on the fluid velocity profile in the load moving direction. It is assumed that the plate material is orthotropic one and the fluid is viscous and barotropic compressible. The plane-strain state in the plate and the plane flow of the fluid is considered. The motion of the plate is described by utilizing the exact equations of elastodynamics for anisotropic bodies, however, the flow of the fluid by utilizing the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. For the solution of the corresponding boundary value problem, the moving coordinate system associated with the moving load is introduced, after which the exponential Fourier transformation is employed with respect to the coordinate which indicates the distance of the material points from the moving load. The exact analytical expressions for the Fourier transforms of the sought values are obtained, the originals of which are determined numerically. Presented numerical results and their analyses are focused on the question of how the moving load acting on the face plane of the plate which is not in the contact with the fluid can cause the fluid flow and what type profile has this flow along the thickness direction of the strip filled by the fluid and, finally, how this profile changes ahead and behind with the distance of the moving load.

  • Composite materialsuch as glass-fiber reinforced plastic and carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) shows anisotropic property and have been widely used for structural members and outfitings of ships. The structural safety of composite structures has been generally evaluated via finite element analysis. This paper presents a technique for updating the finite element model of anisotropic beams or plates via natural frequencies. The finite element model updates involved a compensation process of anisotropic material properties, such as the elastic and shear moduli of orthotropic structural members. The technique adopted was based on a discrete genetic algorithm, which is an optimization technique. The cost function was adopted to assess the optimization problem, which consisted of the calculated and referenced low-order natural frequencies for the target structure. The optimization process was implemented with MATLAB, which includes the finite element updates and the corresponding natural frequency calculations with MSC/NASTRAN. Material properties of a virtual cantilevered orthotropic beam were estimated to verify the presented method and the results obtained were compared with the reference values. Furthermore, the technique was applied to a cantilevered CFRP beam to successfully estimate the unknown material properties.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate problems of residual bending strength and the impact damage experimentally when CFRP composite laminates are subjected to Foreign object damage. The specimens composed of four types of CR/EPOXY and a CF/PEEK composite laminates which involved difference of fiber stracking orientation and matrics. The result were summariged as follows : 1) It is found that both orthotropic and guasi-isotropic composite laminates are increasimg lineally between impact energy and damage delamination area. 2) Delamination devel- opment energy(mm$^{2}$J) OF cf/epoxy composite aminates is less than that of CF/PEEK. 3) When impact energy is applied to specimens within 3J, the residual strength of orthotropic is greater than guasi-isotropic composite laminates. On the other hand, it is predicted that residual bending strength of orthotropic composite laminates is less than that of quasi-isotropic when impact energy is more thaen 3J. 4) It is found in CF/PEEK that for the impact side compression, residual of bending strength versus impact energy is almost constant, while in case of impact side tension, residual bending strength is decreased rapidly near 1.2J. of impact energy due to the effect of delamination buckling.

  • In this study, the analytical investigation of orthotropic rectangular plate is presented. The loaded edges are assumed to be simply supported and the unloaded edges could have elastically restrained boundary conditions including the extreme boundary condition such as simple, fixed, and free. Using the closed-form solutions, the buckling analyses of orthotropic plate with arbitrary boundary conditions are performed. Based on the data obtained by conducting numerical analysis, the simplified form of equation for finding the buckling coefficient of plate with elastically restrained boundary conditions at the unloaded edges is suggested as a function of aspect ratio, elastic restraint. and material properties of the plate. The results of buckling analyses by closed-form solution and simplified form of solution are compared for various orthotropic material properties. It is confirmed that the difference of results is less than 1.5%.

  • The elastic buckling strength of a corrugated pipe made of orthotropic material was evaluated. The height and length of a corrugated wave and the thickness of the pipe were considered as factors affecting the buckling strength of the pipe. And also, the ratio of the longitudinal stiffness and transverse stiffness were considered as parameters affecting on the buckling strength of a pipe made of orthotropic material. Buckling strengths of various corrugated pipes with different shapes and stiffness ratio were evaluated by FE analyses. And a formula to estimate the elastic buckling strength was suggested by regression of FE analysis results. Analysis results show that a corrugated pipe has superior buckling strength to a general flat pipe and the suggested formula estimates accurate buckling strength of the corrugated pipe made of orthotropic material.
