  • The present study discusses some of important issues in the word recognition such as the roles of the form(orthographic & phonologic) and semantic information by investigating the processes of Korean heteronym. The priming paradigm has been applied to see whether or not there would be facilitatory effect from form and/or semantic information. In experiment 1, orthographically-related or phonologically-related prime stimuli were presented and a lexical decision task for Korean heteronym was conducted. The same procedure was applied for the experiment 2, except the prime stimulus which was semantically-related. The results showed that orthographic and phonologic information did not influence the processing of the heteronym while semantic information facilitated its processing, suggesting that the semantic information plays an important role in the processes of the Korean heteronym.

  • Traditionally it has been assumed that written abilities are completely dependent on phonology. Therefore spoken and written language skills in aphasic patients have been known to exhibit similar types of impairment. However, a number of latest studies have reported the findings that support the orthographic autonomy hypothesis. The purpose of this study was to examine whether fluent aphasic patients have discrepancy between speaking and writing skills, thereby identifying whether the two skills are realized through independent processes. To this end, this study compared the K-FAST speaking and writing tasks of 30 aphasia patients. In addition, 16 aphasia patients, who were capable of producing sentences not only in speaking but also in writing, were compared in their performances at each phase of the sentence production process. As a result, the subjects exhibited different performances between speaking and writing, along with statistically significant differences between the two language skills at positional and phonological encoding phases of the sentence production process. Therefore, the study's results suggest that written language is more likely to be produced via independent routes without the mediation of the process of spoken language production, beginning from a certain phase of the sentence production process.

  • In the present study a mesh generation program is developed for three dimensional flow analyses with complex geometry. By the present program one can define vertices using various coordinate systems and cells for finite volume approach. Rendered display of the generated mesh can be also available in both orthographic and perspective projection modes. Through perspective projection mode, one can check the quality of generated mesh by moving around inside the mesh like a virtual reality. The examples of the program execution is given in the paper.

  • This paper proposes an efficient algorithm that constructs 3-dimensional solid object from 3 orthogonal views. This algorithm inputs vertex and edge information of 3 orthogonal views and generates 2 dimensional surfaces, 3 dimensional vertices, edges and surfaces and then compares 2 dimensional projections of 3 dimensional surfaces with surfaces from othorgonal views. This algorithm is useful for CAD system, 3 dimensional scene analysis system and object modeling for real-time animation and has been implemented in C language on IRIS workstation. The effectiveness of this algorithm is shown by examples of aircrafts' models.

  • In CAD/CAM system, many efforts are made to automate the converting process from drawling information to manufacturing Information. The most difficult step In this procedure is utilizing 2 dimensional drawing information In order to formulate 3 dimensional w&ling information. This paper emphasizes to mWe automatically series of convertirg steps which provide 3 dimensional wire frame, surface and solid modeling using feature recognition rules. With the standardization of design process and the recognition rule as preceding steps, it shows a good application tool to interface the design and manufacturing procedures in PC-Level CAD/CAM system.

  • Two experiments were conducted to support the suggestion that the same information processing was used in both input modalities, visual and auditory modality in Wonil Choi & Kichun Nam(2003)'s paper. The primed lexical decision task was performed and pseudoword prime stimuli were used. The result was that priming effect did not occur in any experimental condition. This result might be interpreted visual facilitative information and phonological inhibitory information cancelled each other.

  • Nowadays, computer-mediated communications such as chatting and e-mail are widely used in younger generation. It has been known that the communicating words used by on-line users (so-called netizens) are quite different from those used by ordinary people. That is, the words are generally characterized by shortened, mimetic and onomatopoeic words, and the netizens also use various types of emoticon expressed like signs or symbols. This can cause some orthographic as well as cultural problems. This paper investigates some statistical data in PC-based communications, analyzes the general characteristics, and provides some explanations.

  • This Paper describes a fast and stable camera pose estimation method for real-time augmented reality systems. From the feature tracking results of a marker on a single frame, we estimate the camera rotation matrix and the translation vector. For the camera pose estimation, we use the shape factorization method based on the scaled orthographic Projection model. In the scaled orthographic factorization method, all feature points of an object are assumed roughly at the same distance from the camera, which means the selected reference point and the object shape affect the accuracy of the estimation. This paper proposes a flexible and stable selection method for the reference point. Based on the proposed method, we implemented a video augmentation system that inserts virtual 3D objects into the input video frames. Experimental results showed that the proposed camera pose estimation method is fast and robust relative to the previous methods and it is applicable to various augmented reality applications.

  • The effects of the number of Hangul syllable, the nunber/location of batchim in a Hangul word, and compound/noncompound Hangul word on memory span were examined. The results were that (1) the more syllables a word had, the lower us memory span was, (2) the more batchims a two-syllable word had, the lower its memory span was (Korean batchim effect on memory span), (3) noncompound word had higher memory span than compound word. The reading speed of above mentioned words was measured and the results were that (1) the more syllables a word had, the slower its reading speed was, (2) but the reading speed of a two-syllable word was forest when it had a batchim on second syllable than when it had no batchim or had a batchim on first syllable or batchims on both syllables (Korean ending batchim effect on reading speed), (3) noncompound word was read faster thu compound word. Korean ending batchim effect on reading speed was not compatible with the explanation by articulatory loop bur compatible with the explanation by visual cache where the orthographic information was represented. The results suggest that memory span was influenced nor only by phonological information but also by orthographic information.

  • This study suggests a computational model to inquire the roles of phonological information and orthography information in the process of visual word recognition among the courses of language information processing, and the representation types of the mental lexicon. The model that this study is presenting here was designed as a feed forward network structure which is comprised of input layer which uses two Korean syllables as its input value, hidden layer, and output layer which express meanings. As the result of the study, the computational model showed the phonological and orthographic neighborhood effect among language phenomena which are shown in Korean word recognition, and showed proofs which implies that the mental lexicon is represented as phonological information in the process of Korean word recognition.
