  • The environment exploration is an essential process for indoor robots such as clean robot and security robot. Apartment house and office building has common frame structure, but internal arrangement of each room may be slightly different. So, it is more convenient to use a common frame map than to build a new map at every time the arrangement is changed. In this case, it is important to recognize invariant features such as wall, door and window. In this paper, an indoor mobile robot is implemented, and by using the laser scanner data and line segment histogram with respect to segment orientation and distance, an environment exploration method is presented and tested. This robot is fitted with a laser scanner, gyro sensor, ultra sonic sensor and IR sensor, and programed with C language.

  • Typical underwater acoustic transducers detect only the magnitude of an acoustic pressure and they have the limitation of not being able to recognize the direction of the sound signal. Hence, the authors of this paper proposed a new vector sensor structure based on Tonpilz transducers that could detect both the magnitude and the direction of a sound pressure. In the proposed structure, the piezoceramic ring was divided into four segments, and proper combination of the output voltages of the segments in response to the external sound pressure could provide the information on the orientation of the sound source. In this paper, a Tonpilz transducer has been fabricated to have the proposed structure and its characteristics has been measured to confirm the validity of the proposed structure.

  • In the context of auto-landing containers from a container ship to a truck or automatic guided vehicle and vice versa, this research investigates three schemes, one in Part I and two in Part II, for measuring the absolute position of a container. Coordinate transformations between the reference-coordinate, sensor-coordinate, and body-coordinate systems are briefly discussed. The scheme explored in Part I aims the use of three laser-slit sensors, which are relatively inexpensive. In this case, nine nonlinear equations are formulated for six unknown variables (three for orientation and three for position), so a closed-form solution is not available. Instead, an approximate solution through linearization was derived. An advantage of the method in Part I is its ability to measure an absolute position in 3D space, while a disadvantage is the computation time required to obtain pseudo-inverses and the approximate nature of the obtained solution. Numerical examples are provided.

  • As high-resolution satellite images have enabled large scale topographic mapping and monitoring on global scale with short revisit time, agile sensor orientation, and large swath width, many countries make effort to secure the satellite image information. In Korea, KOMPSAT-2 (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2) was launched in July 28 2006 with high specification. These satellites have stereo image acquisition capability for 3D mapping and monitoring. To efficiently handle stereo images such as stereo display and monitoring, the accurate epipolar image generation process is prerequisite. However, the process was highly limited due to complexity in epipolar geometry of pushbroom sensor. Recently, the piecewise approach to generate epipolar images using RPC was developed and tested for in-track IKONOS stereo images. In this paper, the piecewise approach was tested for KOMPSAT-2 across-track stereo images to see how accurately KOMPSAT-2 epipolar images can be generated for 3D geospatial applications. In the experiment, two across-track stereo sets from three KOMPSAT-2 images of different dates were tested using RPC as the sensor model. The test results showed that one-pixel level of y-parallax was achieved for manually measured tie points.

  • A new INS/Vision integrated navigation system by using multi-vision sensors is addressed in this paper. When the total number of landmark measured by the vision sensor is smaller than the allowable number, there is possibility that the navigation filter can diverge. To prevent this problem, multi-vision concept is applied to expend the field of view so that reliable number of landmarks are always guaranteed. In this work, the orientation of camera installed are 0, 120, and -120degree with respect to the body frame to improve the observability. Finally, the proposed technique is verified by using numerical simulation.

  • In this research we discuss an integrated actuator-control system for advanced control of a smart Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator. Toward this goal, we designed and fabricated an actuator-control module combining two SMA actuating units with a single-chip microprocessor, two different sensing elements, and an actuator driver. In our proposed system, sensing elements include a 6-axis single-chip motion sensor for orientation measurement and a circuit for resistance measurement of SMA wires. We experimentally verified our proposed actuator-control system using actuator driving, sensor data readings, and communication tests.

  • This paper deals with relative position estimation using a Kalman filter (KF) based on inertial sensors that have been widely used in various biomechanics-related outdoor applications. In previous studies, the relative position is determined using relative orientation and predetermined segment-to-joint (S2J) vectors, which are assumed to be constant. However, because body segments are influenced by soft tissue artifacts (STAs), including the deformation and sliding of the skin over the underlying bone structures, they are not constant, resulting in significant errors during relative position estimation. In this study, relative position estimation was performed using a KF, where the S2J vectors were adopted as time-varying states. The joint constraint and the variations of the S2J vectors were used to develop a measurement model of the proposed KF. Accordingly, the covariance matrix corresponding to the variations of the S2J vectors continuously changed within the ranges of the STA-causing flexion angles. The experimental results of the knee flexion tests showed that the proposed KF decreased the estimation errors in the longitudinal and lateral directions by 8.86 and 17.89 mm, respectively, compared with a conventional approach based on the application of constant S2J vectors.

  • In this paper, we generate the 3D geometric sensor model of SPOT-5 HRG stereo images which are processed in Supermode and have 2.5m ground spatial resolution, and calculate the RPC(Rational Polynomial Coefficients) for acquisition of topographic information using the exterior orientation parameters which are determined in the 3D geometric sensor modelling process. It is shown that SPOT-5 images can be modelled with me 3.3m accuracy by the bundle adjustment method used to model the existing SPOT series. Considering the accuracy of RPC's results with rmse 0.03m accuracy, the RPC model can replace the sensor model, if we emphasize the simplification and the cost.

  • Silicon quantum dots base on photoluminescent porous silicon were prepared from an electrochemical etching of n-type silicon wafer (boron-dopped<100> orientation, resistivity of 1~10 ${\Omega}-cm$) and used as a alcohol sensor. Silicon quantum dots displayed an emission band at the wavelength of 675 nm with an excitation wavelength of 480 nm. Photoluminescence of silicon quantum dots was quenched in the presence of alcohol vapors such as methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol. Quenching efficiencies of 21.5, 32.5, and 45.8% were obtained for isopropanol, ethanol, and methanol, respectively. A linear relationship was obtained between quenching efficiencies and vapor pressure of analytes used. Quenching photoluminescence was recovered upon introducing of fresh air after the detection of alcohol. This provides easy fabrication of alcohol sensor based on porous silicon.

  • In this study, we used the sputtering method with single target to obtain the thick and uniform PZT($PbZrTiO_3$) films for micromached IR sensor application. Then, we investigated the etching characteristics and conditions which is necessary process to fabricate the IR sensor. We tested the C-axis orientation and P-E loop of the deposited PZT films with the XRD and RT66A, respectively. Also we investigated the surface of the films by the AFM and SEM analysis.
