  • Objectives : The objectives of this study were to examine the difference in attitude toward health-specific locus-of-control and medical care among western medical students, oriental Medical students, and non-medical school students. Methods : The subjects of this study were 667 students who agreed to respond the questionnaire :212 western medical school students, 190 oriental medical school students, and 205 non-medical school students. The health-specific locus of control was measured by the structured questionnaire developed by Lau and Ware. The attitude toward western and oriental medicine was also measured by the questionnaire. Results : Western medical students and non-medical school students were more likely than oriental medical students to place high value on 'the provider control over health' and 'the general threat to health' scales (F=20.47, F=19.98). But oriental medical school students ranked 'the self control of health' scale as more important than any other locus of control scale (F=19.34). The health specific locus of control was also different from the grade. When trte grade was increased, 'the provider control over health' scale was slowly decreased, especially in western medical students and non medical school students. However, the 'general threat to health' scale was increased in oriental medical students. Western medical school students expressed more positive attitude toward western medicine. Oriental medical school students put a higher score on oriental medicine. Nevertheless, as the grade was increased, the positive attitude toward oriental medicine slightly decreased in oriental medical school students. Conclusions : There is a difference in health-specific locus of control and attitude toward medicine among western medical students, oriental medical students, and non-medical students. The locus of control and attitude of medical students towards medicine may affect both how they behave towards patients and how they help shape future public policy. Therefore, interdisciplinary educational initiatives may be the best way to handle this issue.

  • The environment surrounding oriental medical' doctors made change in accordance with changes of the society to make change of the doctors' ethics. In particular, some of practitioners made light of patients to let people distrust all of the medical professions. The ethics of the literatures of Oriental medicine might be classified into the two, in other words, 'medical technology' and 'mental attitude'. 'Medical technology' laid emphasis upon not only a lot of researches on Oriental medicine but also doing best to give patients medical treatment carefully. 'Mental attitude' laid emphasis upon keeping 'humanity(仁心)' thinking much of patients not to pursue excessive profits. To recover ethical consciousness, not only 'reinforced school education' but also 'reinforced legal regulation' was required. • Objectives: The objective of the study was to resolve various elements of conflict by presenting the results of the study and to help build an enhanced oriental medical service system. Methods: The researcher collected data from 12/15/2006 to 1/31/2007. A total of 1000 questionnaires were sent out to oriental medical doctors working at oriental medical facilities and the 15% (150 questionnaires) of them that were returned completed were analyzed. About separating the task of prescribing oriental medicine (herb) from oriental medical treatment, 80.7% of them were against it. 98.7% said oriental medical doctors needed the control of medical technicians. 2. 72.3% said they had no intention of taking the U.S. NCCAOM board to practice oriental medicine overseas. A majority (57.7%) were in favor of unifying oriental medical license with western medical license. 3. Oriental medical doctors had greater job satisfaction [than all oriental medical doctors number]. If they were to choose another occupation than oriental medicine they would consider becoming a research fellow above all other occupations. If they were to reenter college, they said they would probably choose oriental medical school. However, the choice of reentering oriental medical school was lower than that of western medical school. Conclusion: This study has also statistically determined the current issues that may pose conflicting views on the part of the respondents. A periodic study such as this one will hopefully aid in establishing policies for oriental medicine.

  • Every field of studies form its theory through its universal method and own method based on respective views with its own culture and contributes to academic advancement with appropriate research methodology within theory. Therefore, If methology of oriental medicine is not include universal method and particularity method in research methology, it will not obtain scientific character and lose its logic. The methology of oriental medicine is classified by two approaches, universal methology of natural science which inspect the effect through experimentation on the fact, and particularity methology of human science which understand the effect through translation on the value(politics, economics, society, philosophy, history and culture). In this paper, the methodology of oriental medicine contains duality including both universality and particularity.

  • An empirical formula that has been empirically shown to be effective for a particular condition can be said to add medicinal materials to an existing formula or to make a new prescription by the Korean medical doctors' empirical clinic. This dissertation aims to study the prescriptions according to A Confidential Document of A Distinguished Medical Family written by the writer's ancestor and to contribute to the development of Korean medicine. A Confidential Document of A Distinguished Medical Family is a medicinal recipe that is an heirloom of the Gyeongju Kim family for the eighth generation. And the date and the writer of the book are unknown. The contents of the book consist of 18 parts and are made up of about 300 medical recipes. Of these, 158 formulas and indications of cold damage, wind, urination, stool, jaundice, and internal injury are found in the book. From among these, 61 formulas was directly quoted out of The Precious Mirror of Oriental Medicine, 97 formulas are adjusted in proportion or combined. By the parity of reasoning of the above, I think that this book was published after The Precious Mirror of Oriental Medicine. I will continue to study other formulas except the formulas above mentioned.

  • The policies of oriental medicine, changes of medical systems, development of oriental medical education and research activities of oriental medicine were reviewed in this paper from 1945 to 1995 and several opinions were suggested to relevant government authorities and doctors of oriental and western medicine. The history of oriental medicine had to come a long and winding road since the Political Reform in 1894. However, national effort of oriental medicine people in Korea has kept the oriental medicine as national medicine. It has been a misfortune that oriental and western medical doctors did not get along well each other. In this paper, the right direction of the medical systems for government were suggested together with timely roles of medical doctors of both oriental and western medicine. 1. Government should carry out reasonable and future-oriented medical systems. 2. Medical doctors of both oriental and western medicine should co-operate and try to promote mutual understanding. 3. Oriental medicine should be lectured in western medical college. 4. Medical researches of both oriental and western medicine should be carried out together.
