  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the interpretation of the Gwibi-tang(歸脾湯, GBT) prescription in order to obtain the traditional significance. Methods : We have analyzed the interpretation on the GBT prescription through translations and comparisons based on classic books about the oriental medical prescriptions. Results : 1. The source of GBT in Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑) is Guchiryuyo(口齒類要), Jeongcheryuyo(正體類要) and Gyojubuinyangbang(校註婦人良方) etc. 2. Meaning of "GwiBi(歸脾)" in the GBT name is returning to the Bi(脾) which is origin of generating Gi(氣) and Blood(血). 3. GBT is composed of Sagunja-tang(四君子湯), Hwanggi-tang(黃芪湯) and Danggwibohyeol-tang(當歸補血湯) etc. 4. According to wide range of symptom, GBT can be varied by adding or subtracting herbs. Conclusions : In this study, we have demonstrated various methodologies. This paper will be useful to the future researchers and clinicians to conduct a study on herbal medicines such as the GBT.

  • In this study, we investigated how prescriptions from "Sanghallon(傷寒論)", such as Oryeongsan(五笭散), Banhasasimtang(半夏瀉心湯), Dohaekseunggitang(桃核承氣湯), Jukyeopseokgotang(竹葉石膏湯), were applicated in Onbyeongjobyeon(溫病條辦). When applying prescriptions from "Sanghallon" onto Onbyeong(溫病), Odang had replaced warm, dry herbs with cool herbs which generate body fluid, considering general characteristics of onbyeong that may easily dry up and injure body fluid. In the case of Seuponbyeong(濕溫病), however, warm, dry herbs were also used, as well. Odang did not persist in the general characteristic of onbyeong, but composed prescriptions only based on pathological condition. From this, one can point out his precise thinking of Byeonjeung(辯證), and pragmatic nature of his study.

  • For countless time, many have been made in our oriental medicine. To understand such prescription and to use, we must study the monarch(jun), minister(chen), adjuvant(zou) and guide(shi) theory that is most of the prescription structure principle's the basis. The monarch is the center of the prescription. Two kind is greatly in the method to select the monarch, in the prescription. One method is that a medicinal herb of the high class of medical herb of the Sinnong's Classic becomes the monarch, and the other method is a medicinal herbs which there is most many qunantity in the prescription becomes the monarch. Additionally, a medicinal herbs name of a prescription name can become the monarch. The minister assist the monarch and this is a criteria of the prescription grouping with the monarch. The minister has close relation with the monarch. The adjuvant helps the monarch and the minister nature of drug or restains. So this makes the prescription effectiveness act accurately. The guide does the activity to help the harmony of the prescription and the activity to help the prescription to act in correct place. If we understand the monarch, minister, adjuvant and guide theory well, we have some advantage. The interpreting of the prescription comes to De easy. and, an application range of the prescription is enhanced. the increase and decrease of the medicinal herbs comes to be easy in the prescription. • An empirical formula that has been empirically shown to be effective for a particular condition can be said to add medicinal materials to an existing formula or to make a new prescription by the Korean medical doctors' empirical clinic. This dissertation aims to study the prescriptions according to A Confidential Document of A Distinguished Medical Family written by the writer's ancestor and to contribute to the development of Korean medicine. A Confidential Document of A Distinguished Medical Family is a medicinal recipe that is an heirloom of the Gyeongju Kim family for the eighth generation. And the date and the writer of the book are unknown. The contents of the book consist of 18 parts and are made up of about 300 medical recipes. Of these, 158 formulas and indications of cold damage, wind, urination, stool, jaundice, and internal injury are found in the book. From among these, 61 formulas was directly quoted out of The Precious Mirror of Oriental Medicine, 97 formulas are adjusted in proportion or combined. By the parity of reasoning of the above, I think that this book was published after The Precious Mirror of Oriental Medicine. I will continue to study other formulas except the formulas above mentioned.

  • Treatment chart(醫案) is a document that doctors have described about their own practice. Western doctor's chart has a prescribed form, but otherwise chart of oriental medicine is a free form. As It has no prescribed form, doctors of oriental medicine have recorded important facts that they think especially. For example, details are patient's name, age, sex and address, the name of disease, state of pulse and tongue, state of secretions(stools, urine, perspiration, etc.), color of face, state of sleep and thirst, diagnosis, prescription, improvement of herb, teaching, and so forth. If we study on chart of oriental medicine, we draw a lesson about practices of a famous doctors. Through that we can increase ability of diagnosis and adaptation to circumstance, make ourselves familiar with use of past prescriptions and way of changing prescription, and learn narrative story of past doctors' personal experience, their though and teaching. As chart of oriental medicine had many methods to take a measure to meet the false situation, we can learn that. Through chart of oriental medicine, we can improve our practice of oriental medicine.
