  • In the present study, the anti-inflammatory effect of "Jungcheonhwadamgangki-tang ga Antler" water extract was tested in Xylene-Application mouse ear acute inflammation model. The test articles were once dosed before Xylene-Application, and the changes on body weight and ear weights and histopathological observation of induced ear were conducted with ear histomorphometry. The obtained results were as follows. The increases of absolute and relative ear weight detected in vehicle control compared to that of sham, were significantly and dose-dependently inhibited by Jungcheonhwadamgangki-tang ga Antler in the present study. A classic acute inflammatory histological changes such as subcutaneous edema, thickness and infiltration of inflammatory cells, was detected in vehicle control. However, these histological changes were significantly and dose-dependently inhibited by Jungcheonhwadamgangki-tang ga Antler. In addition, the increases of ear thickness half and thickness full detected in the vehicle control were also dose-dependently decreased in the all Jungcheonhwadamgangki-tang ga Antler-dosing groups. Base on these results, it is concluded that Jungcheonhwadamgangki-tang ga Antler extracts has clear anti-inflammatory effect on the acute inflammation such as bronchial asthma.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the cognition and the attitudes towards the oriental medicine of the nursing students. The questionnaire consisted of the 8 general questions, the 19 questions on the medical characteristics and the 36 questions on the cognition and the effects of the oriental medicine. As the result of the factor analysis, the four factors were divided. In the factor one, they were affirmative in the cognition and the effects of the herbs and the acupuncture and so on. Whreas they considered the western medicine more effective in the surgeon, the operation and the microbial disease. In the factor two, they said that the oriental medicine agreed with their constitution. They had a good recognition of the herbs and recognized its effects, adding that the oriental medicine was mysterious. In the factor three, they said that the oriental medine lacked the scientific bases and herb medicine were not convenient, But they recognized their effects. In the factor four, they recognizd the limit of the oriental medicine. They thought that it was desirable to utilize the oriental medicine with the western medicine as the complementary relation. The corelation between each type and the general features had relationship(P<0.05) as follows: the grade and factor 1, the age and factor 1, family situation and factor 4, family number and factor 4, and whether a family has a patient and factor 1. The higher the grade was, the much they had the western medical-oriented cognition. This was because ~he present nursing education system was the western medical-oriented one. It includs the only one oriental medical course. According to the results of this study, nursing students recognized the general effects of the oriental medical from the disease prevention to its treatment in the first grade. But they came to consider the oriental medical as the complementary fact of the western medical as their grade was higher. However, owing to the application of the oriental medical insurance, the use of the oriental medicine is on the increase and in the nursing field the atteention on the oriental nursing is growing too. There fore the suitable application of the courses related to the oriental medical is required for activating the oriental medicine.

  • Osteoporosis is a worldwide disease leading to significant economic and societal burdens globally. Osteoporosis is caused by unbalanced bone remodeling between the rate of osteoclast bone resorption and osteoblast bone formation. Acer tegmentosum Maxim (AT) is a traditional herbal medicine containing multiple biological activities such as anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory purposes. However, its role in osteoporosis has not been fully studied. Therefore, we investigated whether AT has a potent inhibitory effect on osteoporosis and its mechanism through a systemic evaluation in ovariectomized (OVX) mice. OVX mice were orally administrated with the AT at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg for 10 weeks. Histological images and histomorphometry analyses were performed by H&E and Toluidine blue satin, and the expression levels of receptor activator for nuclear factor-kB ligand (RANKL), nuclear factor of activated T cells cytoplasm 1 (NFATc1), c-Fos, and matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9) related to the osteoclast differentiation were investigated using immunohistochemical analysis. Administration of AT prevented bone loss and the alternations of osteoporotic bone parameters at the distinct regions of the distal femur and spongiosa region in OVX mice. Further, administration of AT increased periosteal bone formation in a dose-dependent manner. Meanwhile, AT inhibited not only the expression of NFATc1 and c-Fos, which are two major regulators of osteoclastogenesis but also reduced bone resorbed encoding expression of MMP9 and RANKL. Our results indicated that administration of AT prevented bone loss and the alternations of osteoporotic bone parameters at the distinct regions of the distal femur and spongiosa region in OVX mice. Also AT has the bone protective effect through the suppression of osteoclast and promotion of osteoblast, suggesting that it could be a preventive and therapeutic candidate for anti-osteoporosis.

  • Obejectives : The electroacupuncture(EA) on regional fat is often used by oriental medicine doctors in Korea. However, there have been few studies about safety and biocompatibility of its application. Therefore we investigated the safety and change of mechanical character of electroacupuncture after its application on localized fat deposit. Methods : Online surveys were completed from Aug 21 2008 to Aug 28 2008, by email, the online survey data were obtained from nearly 10,002 Korean medical doctors who listed their email address on the website of association of korean oriental medicine. This study includes an experiment on the physical strength and biological property of long needles. We represent each method which were collected in advance survey, then sealed the needles off and did laboratory experiment, which includes surface observation, analysis, vickers hardness test, and also biocompatibility and toxicity test. Results : There was no considerable difference about the physical property after applying electric current, the cell survival rate did not change in comparison with controlled group either. Conclusions : Although it seems there are no considerable acupuncture-related problem, we still need additional studies about clinical effectiveness difference related operation condition. Besides, it will need research on the actual condition, standardization, and criteria about the comsumed needle in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an aproach to diagnosis and treatment of sequelae after removal of vestibular schwannoma through Oriental Medicine. An eighty year-old woman with sequelae after removal of vestibular schwannoma was observed and treated. She had difficulty of hearing, facial nerve palsy, dizziness and was generally weak. She was treated with herb medications for these symptoms. Having been treated for 27 days in hospital her symptoms improved. This report provides evidence for application of herbal medicine in treatment of sequelae. • In the literal study of anti-tumor effects of Jakeumjung. the results were as follows. 1. Jakeumjung is a traditional oriental medical prescription which is composed of Cremastare appeniculatae tuber, Euphorbiae pekinensis radix, Toosendan fructus, Chinensis galla, Moschus, Realgar and Cinnabaris. 2. Jakeumjung is applied to patients by administering or external application. When it is administered for patients, pertinent dose is 0.6~1.5g twice or three times per one day. When it is applied by external application, we melt it by water or vinegar and apply it to patients. 3. Effects of Jakeumjung are expelling toxin and pestilence, counteracting pathogen and relieving stagnation, detumescence and stopping pain. So it is used for detoxification from ancient. In recent, it is often used for cancer such as breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, epigastric cancer, acute leukemia, lymphoma, thymus cancer and skin cancer. 4. From the various experiments, Jakeumjung has been proved to have antifungal and antitumor effects. It inhibits and kills L7212, L1210 cells of leukemia. Especially, it acts in S stage of cell period. 5. Jakeumjung includes mineral medicines such as Realgar, Cinnabaris. So if we execute progressive study for anticancer effects and safety, the boundary of oriental medicine of using mineral medicines for cancer therapy will magnify in the future.
