The combination of biological and physical/chemical technologies is a promising technique to reduce highly concentrated pollutants in livestock wastewater. It is suggested to treat livestock wastewater efficiently as follows: firstly, biodegradable organic matters, nitrogen and some of phosphorus should be removed by a biological treatment process and then residual non-biodegradable organic matters, color and phosphorus be eliminated by physicochemical technologies. In this study, therefore, the integrations of chemical coagulation, activated carbon adsorption, Fenton oxidation and ozonation were evaluated to provide appropriate post-treatment processes for biologically pre-treated livestock wastewater. After chemical coagulation followed by ozonation or Fenton oxidation process, the quality of treated wastewater could meet the discharge limit in Korea. However, a yellowish brown color still remained in the treated wastewater after a single method such as coagulation and Fenton oxidation was applied. The ozonation was found to be the most effective technology for the decolorization. Neither simple biological nor physicochemical treatment provides adequate decolorization and sufficient depletion of organics in livestock wastewater so far. Consequently, the integration of Fenton oxidation and ozonation with a biological treatment process is recommended to treat livestock wastewater in terms of removal efficiency.
This study was performed to estimate the characteristics of the organic wastewater treatment and bed porosity with the circulation velocity in the anaerobic fluidized bed biofilm reactor. The results were as follows; 1. With Increasing circulation velocity the fluidized bed expanded smooth and with increasing initial particle volume the fluidized bed was increased. 2. With increasing circulation velocity the gasproduction was increased, but at 1.Scnt/sec of circulation velocity AFBBR showed the highest value of methane production rate per removed COD. Therefore, for the purpose of economical operation in AFBBR, 1.5cm/sec of circulation velocity was optimum 3. The microorganisms were colonized in the crevice of the media. 4. On fluidization, COD, VA,55 profiles with the reactor height were not showed. In conclusion, AFBBR suit the organic wastewater treatment's purpose, and at 1.5cm/sec of circulation velocity the system is economical in an energy Point of view.
In this study, as MBBR(Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) process using waste tire media is suggested for retrofitting with advanced wastewater treatment and the removal property of organic matter and nutrient and the capacity of media are evaluated through long-term operation with pilot plant following seasons, the application capacity of retrofitting with MBBR process to a existing wastewater treatment is studied. As a result of the long-term operation of the process, it is proved that there is no loss and abrasion of media, and also that it is possible to secure the sufficient attached bio-mass. The values of organic matter and nutrient in effluent are suitable for the strict discharged water quality standards in every season including winter.
The removal efficiency of organic compounds and the toxicity evaluation of microorganism have been studied in dye wastewater treatment using $UV/TiO_2$ and $UV/H_2O_2$ photooxidation system. Sample waters tested in this work were raw dye wastewater and dye wastewater treated in $UV/TiO_2$ and $UV/H_2O_2$ photooxidation system respectively. Total organic carbon(TOC) removal rate was 50% in $UV/TiO_2$ process and 80% in $UV/H_2O_2$ process. It has been investigated with colony counting agar method and paper disk method whether the type of treatment process has affected the microorganism growth. In the raw wastewater, more than four types of microorganisms have survived. But, little of microorganisms were alive at TOC removal rate of 50% in $UV/TiO_2$ system. In contrast to that, two types of microorganisms were found at TOC removal rate of 80% in $UV/H_2O_2$ system.
This study focuses on the feasibility of bio-gas production using anaerobic digestion by measuring methane generation and biodegradability through the BMP test of industrial organic wastes. Organic wastes consist of entrails of pigs and organic residues of rumen generated from slaughter houses, wastewater sludge from slaughter waste water, fish offal and residues of vegetables from public wholesale markets, and wastewater sludge from the process of wastewater treatment in paper mill. The cumulative methane production by BMP test ranges from 149.3 ml/g-VS to 406.6 ml/g-VS and this is similar to methane generation of the normal wastewater sludge and food waste. As a result of measurement of biodegradability, wastewater sludge (S1 ~ S4) is low, ranging from 27.1% to 58.9 % and organic residues of rumen (G1) is low at 49.6 %. In conclusion, it turned out that raising the hydrolysis by various pre-treatments is necessary in order to produce bio-gas by using industrial organic wastes.
As the interest in environmental pollution resulting from recent industrial development is converging, wastewater treatment problem of dying processing is one of important pending issue. Usually, flow mediation earth and settling pond etc. of processing plant to handle water or wastewater. Mediation is the wastewater that flowed past settling pond than material of heavy particles, water weight colloid particles that big solids are removed but are suspensibility material settlement exclusion impossible. So, we need flocculation and coagulation action to remove materials from this colloid state. For flocculation and coagulation action chemical agents to add back, addition of chemical agents forms floc of could settle size. That is, shorten the sedimentation time and quality of processing water because promoting sedimentation doing to do fines or suspended solids and colloid can materials large size and also, flocculation to annex efficiency of filtration augment. Therefore, I executed this research to prove that improving organic matter and chromaticity of treated water of processing epochally using organic coagulant informed positive ion co-polymerization superior in color wastewater through this research.
The simulation programs used for diagnosis and design of activated sludge process require organic fractions in municipal wastewater as the input variables. However, methods for characterizing organic fractions are still under development, and are not standardized. In this study, total COD of municipal wastewater was experimentally subdivided into readily and slowly biodegradable COD as well as soluble and particulate inert COD. The COD fractionation of the three municipal wastewater for one year shows linear relationship between each COD fraction and TCOD concentration with around 100% COD balance. This result means that the COD fraction do not vary very much with time, although the actual influent concentrations vary significantly with time and day. Therefore, the experimentally subdivided COD fractions can be utilized as wastewater specific parameters for the simulation of activated sludge processes.
This study was performed to examine the factors influenced on the decomposition of nondegradable organic pollutants( Tricholoroethylene,Benzene ) in aqueous by ultrasonic irradiation. The TCE( Tricholoroethylene ) and Benzene are major hazard compounds causing environmental Pollution and not decomposable substances by conventional treatment. The results shows that the oxidation and reduction reaction of ultrasonic Irradiation was formed the H$_{2}$O$_{2}$ , H$^{+}$ and OH$^{-}$ radical, and then theses was decomposed pollutants of TCE and Benzene in aqueous. We were conformed that the ultrasonic irradiation was excellent in removal efficiency of the nondegradable organic substances any other than processes and utilized the treatment of organic compounds in the industrial wastewater. Conclusively, these results suggest that ultrasonic irradiation may be extremely useful for the treatment of wastewater contaminated organic pollutants, which is difficult to treat economically by conventional treatment.
For a high-rate fermentation and recovery of organic acid, we have developed a new organic acid fermentation reactor with membrane filter, which is the most important part in the new advanced wastewater treatment system. The recovered organic acid is to be reused as an organic carbon source at denitrification process. Some experiments were conducted to compare the performance of acid fermentation at different SRTs, such as 5, 10, and 20 days. The total organic acid concentration produced during the runs was in the range of 2,100-2,900 (mgC/L). The conversion efficiency from substrate to organic acid reached to from 43% to 59%. The recovery rate of organic acid from substrate based on TOC was from 26% to 53%. Regardless of operational conditions, it has been able to maintain the membrane flux constantly, in the range of 0.4-0.46 ($m^3/m^2/day$). The transmembrane pressure drop was 0.2-0.3 (kg/cm) for 100 day's operation. The result of simulation is as follows. Organic removal efficiency of the new advanced treatment system is 95%. 73% of Nitrogen is removed. The removal efficiency of Phosphorus is 93%. By coqulation, soluble phosphorus is able to remove from the water treatment lines, which is impossible at conventional activated sludge system. The unit construction cost is 65000 (yen/m3) and it was 1.4 times than that of the standard activated sludge system. The unit operation cast is 7.7 ($yen/m^3/day$) and it was 1.3 times than that of the standard activated sludge system.
A pilot scale SBR (effective volume, $20m^3$) for the treatment of piggery wastewater treatment was performed with three different kinds of wastewater; fermenter effluent, scraper type and slurry type. The react phase in SBR was performed by sub-cycle operation consisting of repeated short cycle of anoxic-aerobic step. The fermenter effluent was characterized by the rapid nitrification and $NO_X-N$ accumulation due to depletion of organic matter in wastewater. The scraper type wastewater showed appropriate nitrogen removal efficiency, however, a poor response capacity for high loading rate often resulted in increased nitrogen concentration in effluent. Moreover, severe P release was the most serious problem in scraper type wastewater. SBR treated slurry type wastewater with high nitrogen removal efficiency to satisfy effluent quality requirement. It was thought that high concentration of organic matter in slurry made it possible to uptake P during SBR operation, where P concentration of 140mgP/l was decreased to 8mgP/l. As results, SBR was suitable to treat slurry type wastewater which has been discharged to the ocean till now.
