  • Batch experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of sludge acclimation and contact load on the behavior of phosphorus and organic substrates under anaerobic conditions. Four different sludges were acclimated in the sequencing batch reactors operated by intermittent aeration. All the experiments performed in a bench scale have shown the following results: 1. The unreleaseable phosphorus contents for four different sludges are the range of 16 mg P/g SS to 24 mg P/g SS, depending on the sludge acclimation conditions. 2. All the specific substrate uptake rates(SSUR) are expressed in the first order equation for releaseable phosphorus contents. The reaction rate coefficient k, has the values of 4.0, 8.9, and 13.8 mg COD/mg P/hr, depending on the contact load and slut식e species. 3. As reaction proceeds, the ratios of $\delta$P to -$\delta$COD at high contact load are almost constant in the range of 0.10 to 0.14, but at low contact load, they increase from 0.08 to 0.27.

  • The aim of this paper was to study the effect of five different waste combinations (C/N 15, C/N 20, C/N 25, C/N 30, and control) of sewage sludge coupled with sawdust and cattle manure in a pilot scale rotary drum reactor, during 20 days of the composting process. Our results showed that C/N 30 possesses a higher temperature regime with higher % reduction in moisture content, total organic carbon, soluble biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand; and higher % gain in total nitrogen and phosphorus at the end of the composting period implying the total amount of biodegradable organic material is stabilized. In addition, $CO_2$ evolution and oxygen uptake rate decreased during the process, reflecting the stable behavior of the final compost. A Solvita maturity index of 8 indicated that the compost was stable and ready for usage as a soil conditioner. The results indicated that composting can be an alternate technology for the management of sewage sludge disposal.

  • This study was conducted to know the possibility of reducing lime dosage by recycling sludge from bleaching wastewater lime coagulation settlement treatment at pulp mill process. In case of bleaching wastewater at the pulp mill process, when the lime dosage was increased, the removal efficiency of TSS(Total Suspended Solids) was increased, proportionally, but the organic removal efficiency was increased very slowly. It was concluded that sludge recycling at the lime coagulation settlement process was effective method to reduce the requirement of lime dosage. At the lime coagulation settlement process with sludge recycling, when the recycling number was increased, the organic removal efficiency was decreased, sharply. It was evaluated that the pH could be the basic standard for lime supplement by sludge recycling.

  • Endocrine-disrupting phenolic compounds in the water were degraded by laccase from Trametes sp. followed by activated sludge treatment. The effect of temperature on the degradation of phenolic compounds and the production of organic compounds were investigated using endocrine-disrupting chemicals such as bisphenol A, 2.4-dichlorophenol, and diethyl phthalate. Bisphenol A and 2.4-dichlorophenol disappeared completely after the laccase treatment, but no disappearance of diethyl phthalate was observed. The Michaelis-Menten type equation was proposed to represent the degradation rate of bisphenol A by the lacasse under various temperatures. After the laccase treatment of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, the activated sludge treatment was attempted and it could convert about 85 and 75% of organic compounds produced from bisphenol A and 2.4-dichlorophenol into H$_2$O and CO$_2$, respectively.

  • The problem for the removal of phosphorus increased due to reasons like eutrophication control. However its removal and operating criteria were not well developed. This study was made for enhanced removal of P by iron contactor by intermittent aeration activated sludge process. Experiment was conducted to find the effects of organic substance load and HRT, nutrient removal efficiency. When applied organic substance load and HRT, II &III reactor were good treatment efficient while come from Fe of iron contactor. Release of phophorus from II &III reactor sludge under anaerobic condition was low. As the process developed, the content of released ionized Fe from iron contactor increased. In addition, the rate of phosphorus removal became accelerating, and the removed sludge was stabilized in the existence of insoluble status.

  • Trichloroethylene(TCE) is the organic compound which is used variously at the industrial areas. It contaminates soils and groundwater by leaked storage tank, careless treatment in field and the effluent from waste landfills. This study was carried out to identify adsorptive behavior of TCE by soil. Batch experiments were conducted at different soil-organic matter content and lime treatment to determine Freundlich isothermal adsorption equation constant, k and n, for TCE. Sewage sludge cake was applied to make different soil-organic matter content with the level of Oton/ha(S1), 50ton/ha(S2), 100ton/ha(S3). Lime(calcium hydroxide) was treated with the level of 2ton/ha, 4ton/ha, 6ton/ha, 10ton/ha. Freundlich isothermal adsorption equations obtained from experiment with sewage sludge cake were as follows (on condition that the level of TCE applied to soil ranged from 0.5ng/g soil to 2.5 ng/g soil.) : S1 :x/m = 0.393 $C^2$, S2 : x/m = 0.436 $C^2$, S3 : x/m = 0.636 $C^2$Value of k was increased in higher order of 51, 52, 53 with increased level of sewage sludge cake application. From this results, soil which was applied higher level of sewage sludge cake had a good ability on TCE adsorption. With increased the level of lime application, pH of the soil was increased and the ability of the soil in TCE adsorption was decreased.

  • In this study, the effect of reaction parameters including reaction temperature, time, and pressure on sludge degradation and conversion to intermediates such as organic acids were investigated at low critical wet air oxidation(LC-WAO) conditions. Degradation pathways and a modified kinetic model in LC-WAO were proposed and the kinetics model predictions were compared with experimental data under various conditions. Results in the batch experiments showed that reaction temperature directly affected the thermal hydrolysis reaction rather than oxidation reaction. The efficiencies of sludge degradation and organic acid formation increased with the increase of the reaction temperature and time. The removal of SS at $180^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $220^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperatures and 10 min of reaction time were 52.6%, 68.3%, 72.6%, and 74.4%, respectively, indicating that most organic suspended solids were liquified at early stage of reaction. At $180^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $220^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperatures and 40 min of reaction time, the amounts of organic acids formed from 1 g of sludge were 93.5 mg/g SS, 116.4 mg/g SS, 113.6 mg/g SS, and 123.8 mg/g SS, respectively, and the amounts of acetic acid from 1 g of sludge were 24.5 mg/g SS, 65.5 mg/g SS, 88.1 mg/g SS, and 121.5 mg/g SS, respectively. This suggested that the formation of sludge to organic acids as well as the conversion of organic acids to acetic acid increased with reaction temperature. Based on the experimental results, a modified kinetic model was suggested for the liquefaction reaction of sludge and the formation of organic acids. The kinetic model predicted an increase in kinetic parameters $k_1$ (liquefaction of organic compounds), $k_2$ (formation of organic acids to intermediate), $k_3$ (final degradation of intermediate), and $k_4$ (final degradation of organic acids) with reaction temperature. This indicated that the liquefaction of organic solid materials and the formation of organic acids increase according to reaction temperature. The calculated activation energy for reaction kinetic constants were 20.7 kJ/mol, 12.3 kJ/mol, 28.4 kJ/mol, and 54.4 kJ/mol, respectively, leading to a conclusion that not thermal hydrolysis but oxidation reaction is the rate-limiting step.

  • In this study, ways to help anaerobic digestion were studied and waste activated sludge were pretreated by grinding, thawing after freezing and grinding after freezing. The volumes of grinding sludge, thawing after freezing and grinding after freezing were decreased 2.08 times, 3.37 times, 3.54 times compared to the volume of sludge respectively and the larger decline in the sludge has been grinding after freezing, thawing after freezing, and grinding. In addition, when the concentrations of SCOD, SBOD and protein were compared, the concentration of freezing sludge was higher than others and the grinding after freezing method seems to be the highest concentration. When the TS, VS removal rates were compared, thawing after freezing method seems to be higher than others method. From these results, grinding after freezing method is very effective for the pretreatment of sludge and it can be expected grinding after freezing method can be an alternative method for prohibiting ocean dumping of sludge after 2012.

  • This paper describes an investigation to determine whether the activated sludge (AS) process could be used for the treatment of wastewater at the Union Carbide Coporation (UCC) plant in Seadrift, Texas. This plant presently utilizes a waste stabilization pond (WSP) system for treatment of the wastewater. The treatment system consists of an in-plant primary WSP and two off-plant WSPs (secondary and tertiary WSPs), run in series. The total hydraulic detention time of the WSP system is approximately 150 days. Several laboratory-based treatability studies have been conducted to evaluate the performace of the WSP system and the degradability of specific chemical compounds. From an additional study, it was determined that the WSP system was stressed and occasionally operating near the limit of its treatment capacity. The existing primary WSP plays an important role in the overall treatmemt system, because it not only functions as a pH and organic-strength equalization basin, but also serves as a "preconditioning" basin by fermenting high strength organic wastes to volatile organic acids for subsequent degradation in the escondary WSP. However, in view of pending RCRA legislatin conerning the "proposed organic toxicity characteristics limits" (40 CFR Part261: Federal Register, July, 1988), it is possible that the primary WSP will have to be abandoned in favor of alternative treatment options. Therefore the main purpose of this study was to perform activated sludge treatability evaluations for the development of an alternative to the existing primary WSP treatment ststem. In addition, another purpose was to determine the degradability of bis(2-chloroethyl)ether (Chlorex or CX) and benzene(BZ) in the activated sludge process. The presence of these two chemicals in the wastewater of the plant prompted the question of whatedether they could be degraded in an activated sludge system.
