This study was carried out to investigate the appropriate hydroponic system when cherry tomatoes were grown in summer. The base diameter of the trunk, leaf length, leaf width, and the length of cluster were good in deep flow culture(DFC), and not different between NFT and rockwool culture. The first time of flowering and the fruit coloring per cluster were not different among cultural systems, but the marketable yields were good in DFC. In DFC, % dry weight, firmness, the content of organic acid and sugar were low, and the ratio of sugar/organic acid and vitamin C were high. So DFC is recommended for the summer cultivation of cherry tomatoes.
This study was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial activities of organic extracts obtained from the fruit of Thuja orientalis L. The native fruits in Korea were collected and extracted by 80% ethanol, and the extract was sequentially fractionated with n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, and butanol. The fraction yields of n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, butanol and water of ethanol extract were 10.15%, 10.05%, 1.45%, 45.35% and 27.55%, respectively. n-Hexane-soluble fraction showed the highest antibacterial activity against gram positive bacteria, while the chloroform, ethylacetate, butanol and aqueous fractions did not show any antibacterial activity. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MICs) on Staphyloycoccus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Sateptococcus pneumoniae, n-hexane-soluble fraction were $100\;{\mu}g$, $500\;{\mu}g$ and $50\;{\mu}g$/disc, respectively. The antibacterial activity was not destroyed by heating at 80, 100, $120^{\circ}C$ for 30 min and was not affected by pH. In the inhibitory test against the Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Sateptococcus pneumoniae, n-hexane-soluble fraction showed potent growth inhibition at the concentration of 0.1 and $0.5\;{\mu}g/mL$ for 12~24 hours and n-hexane-soluble fraction did not show any mutagenic activity.
This study investigated consumers' perceptions and willingness to pay (WTP) for fruit and vegetables grown using renewable energy such as solar power, geothermal, waste heat from incinerators, hot water from thermal power plants. To this end, this study conducted an online survey of 1,050 consumers in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and the six metropolitan cities, and the main findings are as follows. First, most of the consumers perceived climate change as a serious problem, and 82.8% recognized the government's declaration of carbon zero was appropriate, which means that the government's active response to climate change is important. Second, on the pros and cons of the use of renewable energy when cultivating fruits and vegetables, opinions in favor of solar power were the highest, followed by geothermal heat, waste heat from waste incineration plants, and thermal power generation hot drainage. Third, at least 28.0% to 41.7% of consumers were willing to purchase fruits and vegetables using renewable energy more expensive than fruits grown using fossil energy such as kerosene. This means that the fruit and vegetable market using renewable energy is valuable as a niche market.
This study investigated consumers' perception of fruits and vegetables grown in smart farms to stimulate the sale of agricultural products grown in smart farms. To this end, a survey was conducted on 1,050 consumers. The main results are as follows. First, 58.6% of respondents knew about smart farms, and they perceived fruits and vegetables grown in smart farms as more valuable than those grown in conventional facilities. In the detailed values, values of safety and environmental damage reduction were perceived to be of greatest value among five values. Second, as a result of investigating the importance of smart farm cultivation information in comparison with price, the most respondents emphasized both smart farm cultivation information and price information, and smart farm cultivation information was compared with price information. Cases were investigated to be more important with slight differences. Third, 41.4% of respondents had the price premium payment intention for fruit and vegetables grown in smart farms. Fourth, as a result of analyzing variables affecting the premium intention, the higher the health value among five values was recognized and the more important the smart farm cultivation information was, the higher the premium payment intention was.
This study analyzed the factors influencing the demand for processed products of ugly agricultural products targeting 300 consumers. First, the awareness of the problem of the disposal of ugly agricultural products was very high at 72%. In other words, it can be seen that consumers are highly interested in environmental issues caused by the disposal of ugly agricultural products. Second, the experience of purchasing ugly agricultural products is high at 73%, which is proof that consumers are highly aware of and likely to purchase ugly agricultural products. Third, 77.6% of the respondents said they were willing to purchase processed ugly agricultural products. In other words, it was found that the intention to consume ugly agricultural products was sufficient. Finally, the conjoint analysis was applied to analyze the attribute value of ugly agricultural products. As a result of calculating the total utility of the optimal properties and optimal properties of the ugly fruit fermented, the total utility of the optimal properties was 0.778, the price was 0.481, the eco-friendly certification was 0.004, and the fruit syrup ratio was 0.294.
Smart farm farmers invest a lot of facility costs, time and effort. Product differentiation using storytelling marketing is important for the profitability of smart farms, since it is not easy to differentiate products between fruits and vegetables grown in smart farms and conventional facilities. This study empirically analyzes the effect of storytelling marketing on consumers' value perception and willingness to pay for fruit and vegetables grown in smart farms. For this purpose, the survey is conducted on 1,050 consumers and the main results are as follows. First, as a result of evaluating consumers' value perception, consumers perceive the value of comparative products (product 2 and 3) to be higher than the base product (product 1). Product 2 and 3 provide richer stories than product 1. Second, the willingness to pay for product 3, which provides the richest story, was the highest, followed by product 2, and then product 1. This means storytelling marketing could be an effective strategy that increases the value of fruits and vegetables grown in smart farms. Third, more than half of the respondents are willing to use QR codes when purchasing fresh agricultural products. Farmers could use QR codes to provide rich stories for effective storytelling marketing.

The aim of this work was to study the changes in fruit quality and antioxidant activity depending on ripening levels, storage temperature and storage periods in two strawberry cultivars (Fragaria ${\times}$ ananassa cvs. Daewang and Seolhyang). Fully ripe strawberry fruits (100% colored fruits) and unripe strawberry fruits (50% colored fruits) were harvested and then stored at $4^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, respectively. Hardness, phytochemicals, sugars, organic acids and antioxidant activity of strawberry fruits were measured after storage for 5 and 10 days, respectively. When fruit hardness was compared between the two cultivars, 'Daewang' showed a greater degree of fruit hardness than 'Seolhyang'. 'Daewang' also showed higher amounts of phenolic compounds and sucrose than 'Seolhyang'. In contrary to this, 'Daewang' was shown to contain lower amounts of anthocyanin and fructose than 'Seolhyang'. However, antioxidant activities of both cultivars were almost identical. When the effects of storage temperature were examined on fruit hardness, fruits stored at $4^{\circ}C$ showed a higher degree of hardness than those stored at $15^{\circ}C$. During the period of fruit storage at $4^{\circ}C$ or $15^{\circ}C$, both cultivars showed marked decline in the contents of phenolic compounds as well as sucrose. Contrastingly, they showed higher amounts of anthocyanin and glucose after 10 days of storage. On the other hand, the contents of organic acids in strawberry fruits were influenced only by the period of storage, not depending on cultivars or temperatures. Antioxidant activities of fully ripe fruits declined remarkably after 10 days of storage, as compared to unripe fruits which showed a minor decrease or increase. When fully ripe fruits of both cultivars were stored at different temperatures, those stored at $15^{\circ}C$ showed a significant decrease in the antioxidant activity as compared to those stored at $4^{\circ}C$. However, changes of antioxidant activity in unripe fruits were minor. These observations in order to supply high quality strawberry suggest that fully ripe strawberry fruits should be harvested for the short-term storage and the appropriate ripe level fruit should be harvested for the long-term storage. Storage temperature is appropriate at $4^{\circ}C$.

Fruit drop is a serious problem in plum trees during fruit development after pollination and fertilization. In order to increase fruit yields, physiological fruit drop in plum trees at the early stages of fruit development must be reduced. In this study, the effect of gibberellic acid paste (GA paste 2.7%) applied on 'Formosa' plum was determined to reduce fruit drop. GA paste was applied one time on one set of the fruit stalk at 3 days after full bloom (DAFB), and on another set of the fruit stalk at 13 DAFB, and then the fruit-set rate was observed at 70 DAFB. GA paste application increased the fruit-set rate up to 61%. In 'Formosa', the time of GA application had a strong influence on reducing fruit drop. GA application increased the fruit-set rate up to 61% in treatments at 3 DAFB, and to 15% in treatments at 13 DAFB when the fruit-set rate was 5% in the control group. The same results were observed in 'Honey Red' and 'Akihime' plums. GA application impacted on fruit enlargement in the 'Formosa' cultivar, compared with the control trees, which had no GA application. The rate of fruit enlargement with GA application was similar to that of the control fruits until 70 DAFB, whereas the enlargement rate was slightly higher in the GAtreated trees than the control from 70 DAFB until harvest. In GA-treated fruit, fruit weight increased more than in the control, while total acidity and firmness was lower than in the control group. Additionally, GA application accelerated sucrose increase in maturing fruit. Our data indicated that GA paste application can reduce fruit drop, and subtly promote fruit enlargement and maturation in plum trees.

Lactic acid bacteria KL 1, KD 6, KL 4 strains isolated from kimchi, or obtained Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides with and without yeast(Saccharomyces cerevisiae) were inoculated in fruit vegetable juice for mixed culture fermentation 3 days at 3$0^{\circ}C$, and then their chemical changes were studied during fermentation. The amount of organic acid produced by the mixed culture fermentation of KL 1 and yeast was 0.82%(3 days) or 0.58%(1 day) and with the final pH of 3.3(3 days) or 4.2(1 day). These mixed culture systems of isolated strains or other bacterial strains had almost similar results of growth rate and acid production. The contents of vitamin C and carotene were retained and stabilized as 70~80% level of their initial values after 24 hrs fermentation. And also ethanol was produced as of the range in 9.6mg%(W/V) by the mixed culture fermentation of KL 1 and yeast, however, the content of ethanol in single culture fermentation by KL 1 strain was much lower than that of mixed culture. The major components of organic acids in fermented juice by mixed culture were considered as malic(26.0%), lactic(49.9%), succinic and citric acid, whereas these of unfermented juice were malic(53.2%), citric and other acids. On other hand, reducing sugar was decreased from 18.3mg/ml in fresh juice to about 12mg/ml in juice by mixed culture fermentation. Concentrations of fructose, glucose and sucrose were also greatly reduced in fermented juice.
This study was conducted to develop environment-friendly agricultural products with anti-microbial activity against Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli as a pathogen of bacterial fruit blotch in cucurbit. Schlechtendalia chinensis was extracted by MeOH and solvent fraction. The hexane fraction, which showed highest value of anti-microbial activity, was analyzed by GC-MS. Each mass spectra, corresponding to each peak of chromatogram, was compared to MS database of Wiley library. As a result, myristic acid, palmitic acid and 3-n-pentadecylphenol were identified as maine compounds showing antimicrobial activity against A. avenae subsp. citrulli. Bioassay using commercial myristic acid, palmitic acid and 3-n-pentadecylphenol to test for the anti-microbial activity conformed the anti-microbial activity of potential active compounds, and myristic acid and 3-n-pentadecylphenol showed strong activity. In conclusion, myristic acid and 3-n-pentadecylphenol identified from S. chinensis were anti-microbial chemicals.
