  • This article describes the concept and the trend of antimicrobial coating agents, which will help to establish the direction of the research and development on antimicrobial coating agent. Antimicrobial agents are compounds that inhibit or kill microorganisms. They are classified into inorganic, metallic, low molecular weight organic, natural organic, and polymeric compounds. Antimicrobial coatings are applied to the surface of daily necessities, medical devices, industrial products, electrical appliances, fabrics, and interior building materials, etc. Conventional antibiotics penetrate microbes without damaging bacterial cell walls, leading to drug resistance which polymeric antimicrobials can prevent by disrupting cell walls. Most polymeric antimicrobials are focused on cationic polymers. Improvement in the selectivity and durability of antimicrobials and reduction of their toxicity will come true by more reasonable design of molecular structures and their combination in coating system.

  • It is known that the fluoric resin has the most outstanding properties in the extremely acidic environment of high temperature. However, this resin is the thermal hardening type that needs long time heat treatments above $250^{\circ}C$. It's impossible to use in situ in the extremely acidic environment such as a huge FGD ductworks or industrial chemical tanks. Furthermore, even the natural hardening type fluoric coatings which can be hardened less than $120^{\circ}C$ can not be applied to the highly acidic environmental plants because of its chemical resistance. In this study, new fluoric coatings that has excellent thermal resistance, chemical resistance and corrosion resistance has been developed in order to solve above problems and to be applied to the large plant structures in the field. These newly developed coatings are organic and inorganic composite type that have fluoric rubber(100 wt%), fluoric resin(5~50 wt%), oxalates(5~30 wt%), inorganic fillers mixed with plate-type and bulk-type solids(20~150 wt%), hardeners(0.5~5 wt%), and hardening hasteners(0.1~3 wt%). The best chemical and physical properties of these coatings are acquired by variation of adhesive reinforcement agents, dispersants, leveling agents. Mixing ratios of plate-type and bulk-type inorganic fillers influence the thermal properties, abrasive resistance and chemical infiltration properties of coatings. The mixing control is also very important to have homogeneous surface and removing inner voids of coatings.

  • Silicone oil has organic and inorganic properties, and its skeleton is polysiloxane bonding that silicon is bonded hydrogen or organic group. Silicone compounds are very smooth and lubricant properties by low surface tension, low temperature dependence, and nonadhesive properties. Because of these properties, silicone compounds are used as many parts of chemicals, softener, smooth and libricant agents, water-repellent agent, and defoaming agent, etc. Emulsion was prepared with the inversion emulsification method which adopted the agent-in-oil method dissolving the polyoxyethylene(7) tridecyl ether(HLB 12.2) into methoxy terminated poly(dimethyl-co-methyl amino) siloxane and hydroxy terminated poly(dimethyl-co-methyl amino) siloxane in water. At this time, processed emulsion was almost microemulsion. When ratio of emulsifier increases, emulsion is stable bacuause microemulsion is solubilized by emulsion drop size and zeta-potential are decreased. But, when amount of electrolyte is increase, emulsion became unstable because emulsion drop size is increased.

  • Recently polycarbonate material has been utilized as windows in aircraft, buildings, and optical lens. However, while polycarbonate has excellent optical transparency, impact strength and many beneficial mechanical properties, it possesses poor abrasion resistance and weatherability. Then, there is a need for developing optically clear, anti-abrasive and weather resistant hard coating agents for polycarbonate. In this study, N-triethoxy silyl propyl quinine urethane(TESPQU) was synthesized with quinine and 3-isocyanato propyl triethoxy silane(3-IPTES). In order to introduce optically active silane in the main siloxane network, TESPQU was co-hydrolysed and co-condensed with methyl triethoxy silane(MTES) under acidic conditions. Polycarbonate sheets were coated with silica coating agents by the sol-gel method, and their abrasion resistance, ability of UV absorption and weatherability were evaluated. Coating agents containing hydroxybenzophenone as a UV absorber were also prepared to compare weatherability with TESPQU containing coating agent. TESPQU containing coating agent had good weatherability in accelerated QUV test.

  • The application of microorganisms in the field of construction material is rapidly increasing worldwide; however, almost all studies that were investigated were bacterial sources with mineral-producing activity and not with organic substances. The difference in the efficiency of using bacteria as an organic agent is that it could improve the durability of cement material. This study aimed to assess the use of biofilm-forming microorganisms as binding agents to increase the compressive strength of cement-sand material. We isolated 13 alkaliphilic biofilmforming bacteria (ABB) from a cement tetrapod block in the West Sea, Korea. Using 16S RNA sequence analysis, the ABB were partially identified as Bacillus algicola KNUC501 and Exiguobacterium marinum KNUC513. KNUC513 was selected for further study following analysis of pH and biofilm formation. Cement-sand mortar cubes containing KNUC513 exhibited greater compressive strength than mineral-forming bacteria (Sporosarcina pasteurii and Arthrobacter crystallopoietes KNUC403). To determine the biofilm effect, Dnase I was used to suppress the biofilm formation of KNUC513. Field emission scanning electron microscopy image revealed the direct involvement of organic-inorganic substance in cement-sand mortar.

  • An investigation in search of the best oxidizing agent for smoke generators using rice chaff as a combustible carrier was carried out. Smoke rods formulated with active ingredients (AIs) such as inorganic oxidizing agents, glue, and powdered rice chaff, showed constant and high burning rate and high smoking rate on 11 kinds of pesticides. Sodium chlorate was the most suitable oxidizing agent for smoke rod. Even though the sodium chlorate content of the formulation showing the highest smoking rate of AI was variable to pesticides, the smoking rate appeared to increase as the burning rate increased. Active ingredients in smoke generator using rice chaff as a combustible carrier were stable for 60 days when stored at $50^{\circ}C$. An apparatus designed for smoke trapping was useful to collect smoked active ingredients.

  • Blue light is a blue-based light existing at a wavelength between 380 and 450 nm, and it has been reported that it induces active oxygen and causes aging, and accordingly, interest in the blue light blocking effect is increasing. In this study, the effects of the polarity of oil, viscosity of the formulation, type of emulsifier, emulsified particles, and inorganic UV blocking agents on the blue light blocking effect in UV blocking products were investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that the blue light blocking rate increased as the polarity of the oil became similar to that of the organic UV blocker, and the higher the viscosity of the formulation, the higher the blue light blocking rate. The types of emulsifiers and emulsified particles had little effect on the blue light blocking effect, and the presence of inorganic UV blocking agents was found to be one of the factors that greatly influenced the blue light blocking rate. These results can effectively increase the efficiency of blocking blue light, and may be used in the development of blue light blocking products and formulation research in the future.

  • The feasibility of soil washing was investigated in the laboratory to treat heavy metals-contaminated railway soil. Various organic acids including ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and citric acid as well as inorganic acids such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and phosphoric acid were tested to evaluate washing efficiency. Generally, inorganic acid showed higher removal efficiency compared to organic acids. Specially, EDTA, which are well known as most effective washing agent to remove heavy metals from soil, was not efficient to remove heavy metals in this study. Among washing agents tested in this study, HCl was most effective. The removal of Cd, Cu, and Pb was high, however, that for Zn and Ni was less than 30% with 0.5 M HCl. This difference comes from analytical methods (Korean Standard Test Method for Soil). Aqua regia was used to extract Zn and Ni, however 0.1 N HCl was used for other metals. As a result, simple washing technology is not effective, to treat railway contaminated soil with heavy metals.
