  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the immediate effects of weight-assisting methods on vastus medialis oblique (VMO) and vastus lateralis (VL) muscle activation, on the VMO/VL muscle activation ratio, and on muscle onset time in healthy subjects when ascending stairs. Methods: Healthy participants were randomly assigned to the belt group (n = 11), hand group (n = 11), and control group (n = 11). In the belt group, a belt was wrapped around the sacrum and pulled forward with both hands, moving the center of weight forward, while ascending stairs. The hand group grasped the hips with both hands and climbed stairs, assisting their weight from the rear and moving the center of weight backward, and the control group climbed the stairs without any intervention. Results: Muscle activation of the VMO decreased significantly after the intervention in the belt and hand groups, and activation of the VL muscle in both groups showed a greater decrease than that of the VMO muscle. Further, the VMO/VL muscle activation ratio increased significantly, with an improvement shown in the order of the belt group, hand group, and control group, while muscle onset time also improved in the order of the belt group, hand group, and control group. Conclusion: The belt group demonstrated the greatest effect across all dependent variables, confirming that in clinical practice, these two weight-assisting methods are more effective interventions during stair ascent for patients with knee joint instability, pain, and imbalance than no assistance.

  • Statement of problem. Nano-scale calcium-phosphate coating on the anodizing titanium surface using ion beam-assisted deposition (IBAD) has been recently introduced to improve the early osseointegration. However, not much is known about their surface characteristics that have influence on tissue-implant interaction. Purpose. This study was aimed to investigate microtopography, surface roughness, surface composition, and wettability of the titanium surface modified by the anodic oxidation and calcium phosphate coating using IBAD. Material and methods. Commercially pure titanium disks were used as substrates. The experiment was composed of four groups. Group MA surfaces represented machined surface. Group AN was anodized surface. Group CaP/AN was anodic oxidized and calcium phosphate coated surfaces. Group SLA surfaces were sandblasted and acid etched surfaces. The prepared titanium discs were examined as follows. The surface morphology of the discs was examined using SEM. The surface roughness was measured by a confocal laser scanning microscope. Phase components were analyzed using thin-film x-ray diffraction. Wettability analyses were performed by contact angle measurement with distilled water, formamide, bromonaphtalene and surface free energy calculation. Results. (1) The four groups showed specific microtopography respectively. Anodized and calcium phosphate coated specimens showed multiple micropores and tiny homogeneously distributed crystalline particles. (2) The order of surface roughness values were, from the lowest to the highest, machined group, anodized group, anodized and calcium phosphate deposited group, and sandblasted and acid etched group. (3) Anodized and calcium phosphate deposited group was found to have titanium and titanium anatase oxides and exhibited calcium phosphorous crystalline structures. (4) Surface wettability was increased in the order of calcium phosphate deposited group, machined group, anodized group, sandblasted and acid etched group. Conclusion. After ion beam-assisted deposition on anodized titanium, the microporous structure remained on the surface and many small calcium phosphorous crystals were formed on the porous surface. Nanoscale calcium phosphorous deposition induced roughness on the microporous surface but hydrophobicity was increased.

  • Background: Compared with normal people, stroke patients have decreased voluntary craniocervical motion, which affects their balance. Objects: This study was conducted in order to examine the effects of active craniocervical movement training using a cognitive game on stroke patient's cervical movement control ability, balance, and functional mobility. Methods: The subject of this study were 29chronic stroke patients who were randomly allocated to either an experimental, cognitive game group (n = 15), or control group (n = 14), to which only neuro-developmental treatment (NDT) was applied. The intervention was conducted 5 times per week, 30 minutes per each time, for a total of 4 weeks. Active angle reproduction test, static stability test, limits of stability test, and Time up and Go (TUG) test, respectively, were carried out in order to evaluate cervical movement control ability, static balance, dynamic balance, and functional mobility. Paired t-test was used in order to compare differences between prior to after the intervention, along with an independent-test in order to compare prior to and after-intervention differences between the two groups. Results: After the craniocervical training with a body-driven cognitive game, the experimental group showed significant differences in flexion, extension, and lateral flexion on the affected side, and rotation on the affected side in the active angle reproduction test. The experimental group indicated significant differences in sway length both with eyes-open and with eyesclosed in the static stability test and in limits of stability test and TUG test. The control group to which NDT was applied had significant differences in flexion in the active angle reproduction test and in limits of stability test and TUG test. Conclusion: The above results mean that craniocervical training using a body-driven cognitive game positively influences stroke patient's cervical movement control ability and as a result their balance and functional mobility.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was both to examine the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) lower leg taping and treadmill training on the gait and balance abilities of patients with hemiplegia resulting from a stroke and to provide a taping method based on the PNF concept. Methods: Twenty patients with hemiplegia resulting from a stroke were randomly and equally assigned to a control group (n=10), which received treadmill training, and to an experimental group (n=10), which received PNF lower leg taping and treadmill training. The intervention was conducted five times per week for six weeks. In order to measure changes in the gait ability of the subjects, a 10-meter walking test (10MWT) and a 6-minute walking test (6MWT) were conducted, and in order to measure changes in the subjects' balance ability, a timed up and go test (TUG) was performed. In order to compare differences within each group before and after the intervention, a paired-t test was carried out, and in order to compare differences between the two groups, the analysis of covariance was utilized. All statistical significance levels were set at ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: There were significant differences before and after the intervention within both groups in changes of 10MWT, 6MWT, and TUG (p<0.01). Regarding differences between the two groups, the experimental group underwent more effective changes than the control group in 6MWT and TUG (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study applied PNF lower leg taping and treadmill training to patients with hemiplegia resulting from a stroke, and this resulted in improvement in the subjects' gait and balance abilities. Taping and treadmill training based on the PNF concept is considered to be usefully applied as one of the programs to improve hemiplegic patients' gait and balance abilities.

  • A new $N_3-O_2$ pentadentate ligand, H-BHPT, was synthesized. Hydrochloric acid salts of Br-BHPT, Cl-BHPT, $CH_3O$-BHPT and $CH_3$-BHPT, having Br-, Cl-, $CH_{3-}$ and $CH_3O-$ substituents at the para position of the phenol hydroxyl group of H-BHPT were synthesized. Hydrochloric acid salts of 3OH-BHPT and 4OH-BHPT, having different position of the phenol hydroxyl group of H-BHPT were also synthesized. The synthesis of each ligand was confirmed by C. H. N. atomic analysis and $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, UV-visible, and mass spectra. The calculated proton dissociation constants ($log{K_n}^H$) of the phenol hydroxyl group and secondary amine group of the synthesized $N_3-O_2$ ligands showed five steps of the proton dissociations. The order of the overall proton dissociation constants ($log{\beta}_p$) of the ligands was Br-BHPT < Cl-BHPT < H-BHPT < $CH_3O$-BHPT < $CH_3$-BHPT. The order agreed with that of Hammett substituent constants (${\delta}_p$). However, dissociation steps of 3OH-BHPT were four and that of 4OH-BHPT was three. The calculated stability constants ($logK_{ML}$) between the ligands and transition metal ions agreed with the order of $log{\beta}_p$ values of the ligands. The order of the stability constants between the transition metal ions with the synthesized ligands was Co(II) < Ni(II) < Cu(II) > Zn(II) > Cd(II) > Pb(II). The order agreed well with that of the Iriving-Williams.

  • It is known that the automorphism group of a K3 surface with Picard number two is either an infinite cyclic group or an infinite dihedral group when it is infinite. In this paper, we study the generators of such automorphism groups. We use the eigenvector corresponding to the spectral radius of an automorphism of infinite order to determine the generators.

  • In this paper we study a $C^{*}$-dynamical system (A, G, .alpha.) where A is a UHF-algebra, G is a finite abelian group and .alpha. is a *-automorphic action of product type of G on A. In [2], A. Kishimoto considered the case G= $Z_{n}$, the cyclic group of order n and investigated a condition in order that the fixed point algebra $A^{\alpha}$ of A under the action .alpha. is UHF. In later N.J. Munch studied extremal tracial states on $A^{\alpha}$ by employing the method of A. Kishimoto [3], where G is a finite abelian group. Generally speaking, when G is compact (not necessarily discrete and abelian), $A^{\alpha}$ is an AF-algebra and its ideal structure was well analysed by N. Riedel [4]. Here we obtain some conditions for $A^{\alpha}$ to be UHF, where G is a finite abelian group, which is an extension of the result of A. Kishimoto.oto.
