Paraquat-resistant biotype of Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronq. was determined by chlorophyll loss and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis and the resistant mechanism was investigated with respect to absorption, translocation, and binding constant. RAPD analysis for paraquat resistant (R) and susceptible (S) biotypes found in a pear orchard revealed that the biotypes possessed remote genetic relationship. Chlorophyll loss, as an indication of paraquat toxicity, of S biotype was 7.8-fold greater than that of R biotype. There were no differences in contents of epicuticular wax and cuticle and amounts of [14C]paraquat penetrating the cuticle between the two biotypes. Little translocation of the herbicide out of the treated leaf was observed in either biotype. Binding constants of paraquat to the cell wall and thylakoid membrane were 7.4-fold and 16.9-fold, respectively, higher in R biotype than in S biotype. The results suggest that the resistance mechanism of C. canadensis biotype is due partly to high binding affinity of paraquat to the cell wall and thylakoid membrane.

Seasonal occurrences of three Tortricinae species were monitored at persimmon orchard in Changwon city ($35^{\circ}$09'18.16"N $128^{\circ}$34'43.63"E), Gyeongnam, Korea, by using sex attractant traps in 2012 and 2013. The two years of monitoring revealed that Adoxophyes honmai and Homona magnanima occurred four times a year, and Neocalyptis angustilineata did three times. Peak occurrence of A. honmai was recorded in mid-May, from early to mid-July, from late July to early August, and from mid- to late September for the generation, respectively. H. magnanima population peaked during mid- to late May, mid-July, from late August to early September, and from late September to mid-October for the generation, respectively. N. angustilineata showed three clear peaks from late May to early June, in late July, and from early to mid-September for the first, second, and third generation, respectively.

This study was performed to monitor the seasonal occurrence of Pseudococcus comstocki (Kuwana) by using pheromone traps and to test a mating disruption technique to control this pest in pear orchards. We compared the attractiveness of rubber septa loaded with 1.5 and 3.0 mg of the pheromone, 2,6-dimethyl-1,5-heptadien-3-yl acetate. A total of 1,021 and 1,431 males were caught in traps baited with 1.5 mg and 3 mg of the pheromone, respectively. The numbers of males caught were not affected by trap color, although yellow traps were more attractive than white traps. In 2012, P. comstocki males were captured between June and October, with peaks in late June, early August, and late September. In 2013, the males were trapped between June and October, with peaks in middle June, late July, and late September. In pheromone mating disruption tests, catches were reduced by 17.7, 65.3, and 62.9% in orchards treated with 450, 900, and 1,350 mg per 10 a of the pheromone, respectively. At harvest, 3.4, 2.9, and 4.8% of fruits in orchards treated with 450, 900, and 1,350 mg per 10 a were damaged by P. comstocki, while 9.5% were damaged in the control orchard.
Recently, turbidity problem is one of the hot issues in dam and reservoir management works. Main reason to bring about high density turbid water is sediment yield by rainfall intensity energy. Because existing researches didn't consider diverse types of crops, it was difficult to calculate more accurate soil erosion and sediment yield. This study was evaluated the reduction efficiency of soil erosion and sediment yield using ginseng layer extracted from IKONOS satellite image, and the area and the ratio of ginseng area represented $0.290km^2$ and 0.94%. The reduction efficiency of soil erosion considering ginseng area represented low value in 0.9% using GIS-based RUSLE model, because the area of ginseng was small compared to areas of other agricultural lands. To reflect future land use change, this study was calculated the reduction efficiency of soil erosion and sediment yield by considering many scenarios as kinds of crops of paddy, dry field, orchard, and other agricultural areas convert to the ginseng district. As result of analysis of them according to scenarios, scenario (1) in which dry field was converted to ginseng area and scenario (2) in which fully agricultural lands were converted to ginseng area showed high reduction efficiency as 31.3% and 34.8% respectively, compared to existing research which didn't consider ginseng area. Methodology suggested in this study will be very efficient tools to help reservoir management related to high density turbid water.

Grapholita molesta (GM) has been considered as a major problem to apple and peach orchards. Mating disrupters have been applied to control the pest over the world as an Integrated Pest Management [IPM] tool. Various types of dispensers releasing mating disrupters have been developed with different formulation of wax, polyethylene tube and aerosol. In this study, the dispensers that were composed of ester waxes and polypropylene (PP) film were used as dispenser materials to analyze release pattern of GM pheromone compared with paraffin wax and polyethylene (PE) film. The release pattern in PP film group was consistent with time while PE film group irregular. Based on these results, Japan wax_PP film dispenser (Japan_PP) was manufactured and showed the mating disruption effect of 98% during 5months in peach orchard.

The two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch, overwinters in apple culture areas of apple orchards. The mite overwinters in various places on the apple trees, usually in groups of 5-15 females. Overwintering females were mostly found in bark crevices with the hibernation cocoons of the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta Busck. They were also found in small crevices of the bark, and in pedicels left after fruit harvesting. Furthermore, overwintering females were found on rough bark at the bases of buds and spurs, on small limbs and twigs, and in limb crevices and forks. Empty scales of dead diaspidids and coccids, as well as cocoons of lacewings and mummies of parasitized aphids sporadically found on trees, were found to be less common overwintering sites for females of the two-spotted spider mite. In two successive years, the mortality of overwintering females was very high, reaching approximately 72 and 80%. This could be due to the low temperature of winter season in Korea and the low cold tolerance of the mite.

This study was performed to estimate the efficacy of three commercial mating disruptors for the control of oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck), using a food-baited trap to collect field females. Mated female ratios estimated in the mating disruptor-treated areas were compared with the estimates of male trap captures, and both estimates were evaluated on the basis of crop damage measured by shoot tip damage caused by G. molesta. Both males and females were attracted to the food trap-baited with terpinyl acetate in apple orchard. Spermatophore of G. molesta was similar to female bursa copulatrix in size. Though there was more than 95% reduction in male trap captures indicating significant mating disruption, significant crop damage occurred on apple leaf buds, in which more than 35% of captured females were mated. This study demonstrates that assessment of the mated females would be more reasonable to represent the efficacy of mating disruptor(s) than the assessment of the male captures in G. molesta.
Attractiveness of stink bugs to various colors, heights and locations of fish-net traps incorporated with aggregation pheromones was determined. Bean bug, Riptortus pedestris Fabricius, was most attracted to yellow color trap, followed by white, black, green, blue and brown. R. pedestris and one-banded stink bug, Piezodorus hybneri Gmelin, were most attracted to fish-net traps placed 80 cm above the ground regardless of sexes of two species of stink bugs. Between the sexes, however, R. pedestris females were more attracted to 40 and 80 cm above the ground than the males at those heights although the attraction was not significantly different at 120 and 160 cm heights. P. hybneri females tended to be attracted to 40 and 80 cm height traps but the attraction was the opposite at 120 and 160 cm heights. The highest attraction of R. pedestris was observed in a perilla field with no significant difference in the soybean field and border area in which no crop were cultivated between the perilla and soybean fields. R. pedestris was also more attracted to the sweet persimmon orchard than the soybean and medicinal crops fields, which was a significant difference between the two fields.
The damage by fruit-piercing moths in orchards, primarily on grapes cultivated on reclaimed hillsides in Koksung, Cholla Namdo, was surveyed during July to October, 1974. Moths collected at night, mostly with the aid of flash light, were then classified. Results are summairzed as follows; 1. In addition to the 14 species of fruit-piercing moths reported in Korea, 11 new species were collected lot the first time ia Korea. These include. Speiredonia retorta Clerck, Cocytodes coerulea Guenee, Metopta rectifasciata Menetries, Ophideres fullonica Linnaeus, Serrodes campana Guenee, Mythimna turca Linnaeus, Amphipyra livida Schiffermuller et Denis, Paralleia maturata Walker, Ophiusa tirhaca Cramer, Anomis mesogona Walker and Thyas dotata Fabricius. 2. The maximum emergence of moths in Koksung Orchard was from the 10th to the end of September. Only a few moths were observed befroe the begining of August or after October 10. 3. The number of moths flying to grape vines increased as the time advanced from sunset to midnight. Populations gradually decreased thereafter until 5:30 a. m., when only occasional moths were observed. 4. Average damage to grape fruits by these insects was virtually nil until August 10; with subsequent infestation rates of $1.0\%$ on August 15, $17.6\%$ on September 26, and $20.3%$ on October 4, respectively. 5. Fruits of less than 10 percent sugar content and higher than 6.2 acid value were free from damage by these moths, and those of higher sugar content and lower acid value to be more heavily attacked.
The occurrence of plum fruit moth, Grapholita dimorpha, has been recently reported in apple orchards in Korea. It has been suspected that G. dimorpha and its related species, G. molesta, may occur simultaneously in other host plants. This study reports the occurrence of G. dimorpha in pear orchards of different localities in Korea. The identification of G. dimorpha was determined by morphological characters and the DNA marker. The cross-trapping of both species may be possible because the major sex pheromone (SP) compositions for the two species are similar. From the monitoring data, G. dimorpha and G. molesta were caught in SP lure traps of G. dimorpha and both species were also caught in SP lure traps of G. molesta. This cross-trapping of G. molesta to a SP lure of G. dimorpha varied significantly among pear orchards in different geographical localities. Furthermore, the occurrence peaks of the two species were not coincidental in all monitored orchards. These suggest that monitoring data obtained from each SP trap of both species in pear orchards may be mixed with two species, which would result in the over-estimation of population density and peak frequency on both species in pear orchards.
