  • Different timings of coverage by a small paper bag at the young fruit stage were tested in order to evaluate the effect on the protection of fruit damage occurred by disease or pest, and quality deterioration during organic cultivation of 'Hwasan' (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) pear cultivar. The occurrence of four major moth populations and two major diseases in pears were monitored from April to September 2015. Among major moths and diseases, Grapholita molesta and pear rust were found often in the organic pear orchard, and they were observed frequently in May. Coverage by a small paper bag at the young fruit stage resulted in better fruit quality and a higher proportion of commercial fruits compared to a coverage timing of conventional paper bag. Interestingly, the fastest coverage timing of a small paper bag at the young fruit stage (when it was covered in April) showed the lowest occurrence of damaged fruits, which indicates that it successfully protected fruits from the damage caused by moths and diseases during April and May. Moreover, this timing of small paper bag coverage did not negatively affect the major qualitative and quantitative characteristics of fruits. These results suggest that early coverage by a small paper bag at the young fruit stage can be considered an efficient management strategy for organic cultivation of 'Hwasan' pear cultivar.

  • In Korea, over three hundreds of the coal mines were closed or abandoned due to the depression of the mining industry since the late 1980s. Many of them locate in the steep mountain valleys and the coal mine wastes had been disposed without a proper treatment From these mines, enormous amounts of coal mine overburdens have been abandoned in the slopes and the ample amounts of acid mine drainage (AMD) from either portal or overburdens have been discharging directly to the streams, causing the detrimental effects on soil and water qualities. Objectives of this research were to reclaim the coal mine overburdens using the lime waste cake from the soda ash production by stabilizing the overburden slopes, introducing the vegetation alleviate the environmental problems caused by the closed coal mines. The percentages of the grass distribution ratio (%) and the surface coverage ($\textrm{cm}^2$) in each treatment plot were determined during June to August after seed spraying grasses such as orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata L), Kentucky Bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and Eulalia (Miscanthus sinensis Anderss) at the end of May. The grasses covered only 15.5 % of the coal overburden plot at the early stage but the coverage was increased with time to 33% in August. Growth of such grasses was enhanced with the combined treatments of lime waste and topsoil resulting in the increased surface coverage by the grasses. The Increment of the surface coverage from June to August was higher with lime waste treatments. The distribution percentages and surface coverage were highest when the lime wastes were treated at 25 % of the lime requirement. This might be related with the high salt contents in the hire wastes. Results demonstrated that the amounts of lime wastes at 25% of the lime requirement were sufficient for neutralizing the acidic coal overburden and introducing the re-vegetation. Either layering between the coal waste and topsoil or mixing with coal overburdens could be adopted as the lime waste treatment method. The combined treatment of lime wastes and topsoil was recommended for re-vegetation in the coal overburden slopes. The lime wastes from the soda ash production might have a potential to be recycled for the reclamation of the abandoned coal mines to alleviate the environmental problems associated with coal mine waste.

  • The evaluation of structural carbohydrate losses and its effect on silages digestibility in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) and orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) was studied during 5, 21 and 56 days ensiling. About 70 and 60 kg fresh matter of the two forages were ensiled in 9 silos of 120 L capacity. The digestion trials were conducted in two phases using the two grasses in two $4{\times}4$ Latin square design according to the four treatments being the grass and the three silages. There were no differences in the DM and CP contents resulting from 5 to 56 days ensiling in both forages. The water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), hemicelllose, pectin, and energy were slightly reduced and appeared lower in 56 days silage. The ether extract and cellulose contents slightly increased as the ensiling process advanced in the two species. Hemicellulose losses of 29 and 41 g/kg DM were obtained in alfalfa and orchardgrass, respectively, 56 days after ensiling. While the cellulose losses in both species were very little, compared to that for hemicellulose, the pectin losses, 56 days after ensiling were 15 and 12 g/kg DM in alfalfa and orchardgras respectively. The total structural carbohydrates lost (ie., hemicellulose + cellulose + pectin) in g/kg DM of fresh material forage ensiled, is about four fifths the amount lost by WSC, in alfalfa and about two thirds, in orchardgrass, by 21 days ensiling after the activity of microorganism terminated, indicating that appreciable amount was used as substrate for silage fermentation. Ensiling alfalfa and orchardgrass for 0, 5, 21 and 56 days maintained a decreasing trend of 83.8, 82.5, 79.3 and 78.9% digestibility in alfalfa and 80.5, 77.0, 77.1 and 76.4% digestibility in orchardgrass. While the digestibility of cellulose and ether extract increased in silage in both species, the digestible energy values in silage were reduced from 2.6 to 2.3 and 2.9 to 2.7 Mcal/kg DM respectively in alfalfa and orchard during 5-56 days ensiling.

  • Cone and seed development after self-pollination in 14-year-old Pinus rigida Mill. was investigated in an $F_1$-hybrid seed orchard that consists of Pinus rigida Mill. and Pinus taeda L. in alternative rows. On an average, 83.8% of the self-pollinated receptive female strobili developed into cones. This value appears to be normal compared to cone development after open-pollination in other pine species such as in Pinus sylvestris L. However, there was a great variation in filled seed development after self-pollination among the investigated individual trees (Table 1-1). The 34.5%, a ratio of filled seeds after self-pollination was significantly lower than 91.7%, that by the open-pollination. Some of the investigated trees developed 70.0%-83.5% of filled seeds after self-pollination. Thus, those are not desirable as trees for seed parent in establishing $F_1$-hybrid seed orchards in future. A further study on the rate of filled seed development by various pollination systems consisting of self-pollination, self-and cross-pollination with intraspecific, mixed (tree's own and foreign pollens) pollens and cross-pollination with interspecific, mixed pollens of the two parental tree species is necessary to determine the quality of seed parent trees in establishing $F_1$-hybrid seed orchards.

  • Optimal spray time, interval and number of preventive fungicides against fruit rots of kiwifruit were investigated at the orchard which both green kiwifruit cultivar 'Hayward' and gold kiwifruit cultivar 'Hort16A' are cultivating side by side during 2009 and 2010 growing seasons in Jeju island, Korea. The highest control efficiency was obtained from benomyl WP and followed by thiophanate-methyl WP and carbendazim+diethofencarb WP. The control efficacies of the fungicides were much higher when applied onto the kiwifruit canopy after the flowering time than before the flowering time but thereafter their control efficiencies were decreased drastically according to delays of spray timing. With increasing spray numbers of the fungicides, the control efficacy increased. However, optimal spray time, interval and number of the preventive fungicides for the effective control of fruit rots of kiwifruit were determined as 4 time-spray schedule with 2-week-interval just after the flowering time on both 'Hayward' and 'Hort16A' cultivars.

  • The previous study showed that die-back of apple trees caused by soil-borne diseases was significantly high in the apple orchards in Chungbuk province. The correlation between dieback ratio and cultivation environment in apple orchards infected by soil-borne diseases was investigated in this study. The dieback ratio of five orchards diseased by violet root rot and five places infected by white root rot showed significantly positive correlation with Ca content and available $P_2O_5$ content in soil, respectively. Whereas, the dieback ratio of fourteen orchards diseased by Phytophthora root rot was not significant. Subgrouping of cultivation environment analysis showed that the slope degree of orchard and the number of fruit setting also affected the dieback ratio caused by violet root rot and Ca content in soil also affected the dieback ratio caused by white root rot. It showed that the slope degree, soil texture, Mg and Ca content affected the dieback ratio caused by Phytophthora root rot. These results can be applied to reduce die-back ratio by the modification cultivation environment for each soil-borne disease.

  • This study was conducted from 1991 to 1993 to develop a fungicidal spray program for the apples exportable to the United States of America, in which quarantine and pesticide residue in agricultural products are strictly regulated. In 1991, 2 spray schedules were applied to an orchard, in one of which the 7 fungicides registered for apple both in Korea and U.S. were used, and in the other of which the Bordeaux mixture for which the tolerance was exempted in U.S. was used 2 times along with those 7 fungicides. The apple white rot and fruit infection by Alternaria mali were not effectively controlled by the 7 fungicides alone; however, the control efficacy was raised by adding the Bordeaux mixture to the spray schedule. In 1992, 4 spray schedules were applied in which the kinds of fungicides and spray intervals were different one another. The results suggested that an effective spray program can be developed by adopting the Bordeaux mixture for 3 times or adopting the imminoctadine-triacetate which has not tolerance level in U.S. for same times in the vulnerable stage of apple white rot and alternaria blotch. In spite of the high efficacies against major apple diseases, the Bordeaux mixture could not be recommended to the apple growers due to the various defects such as restrictions in compatibility with insecticides and acaricides, troublesomeness in preparation and spray, especially the harmful effect on the finish of Fuji apples. In 1993, a spray program adopting 3 times of imminoctadine-triacetate during the growing season of apple was developed, which not only can effectively control the major apple diseases but also avoid the pesticide residue problems if it was sprayed 2 or 3 times after bagging. On the basis of the 3 years results, a basic fungicide spray program was formulated in which 1~3 times of imminoctadine-triacetate and 1~2 times of bitertanol were adopted in addition of the 7 common fungicides registered in both countries. In the results of application of the spray schedule to the actual farming in the 4 areas of Kyungpook Province in 1994, no noticeable defects were detected at the first year trial. However, this spray program will be continuously evaluated and modified to obtain better control efficacies against major apple diseases.

  • In this paper, we report a characterization of Prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV) isolate. The virus was identified from 'Yumyeong' peach showing mild mosaic on leaves in commercial orchard of 'Umsung', Chungbuk province in Korea. The virus isolate produced ringspot symptom on the inoculated cotyledons and systemic mosaic and malformation on the upper leaves of Cucumis sativus. Systemic mottles were appeared in Chenopodium quinoa. When the buds of the virus infected stem were grafted on the healthy young Prunus persica GF305 seedlings, line pattern with mosaic appeared within 3 months. Isometric virus-like particles were found in parenchyma cells and plasmodesmata of C. sativus leaves inoculated mechanically with the virus. The cDNA fragments of PNRSV coat protein (CP) region, approximately 675bp, were synthesized from genomic RNA extracted from virus-infected leaves by RT-PCR using specific primer pairs. Partial nucleotide sequences of the CP regions were determined and analyzed with the known PNRSV. The CP gene of PNRSVKorea isolates showed 93.9~94.7% similarity to the 4 known PNRSV isolates.

  • A rhizopus soft rot caused by Rhizopus stolonifer occurred sporadically on grape in orchard in Gyeongsang-nam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services and in Wholesale Market of Agricultural Products in Jinju city. The infected fruits were rapidly water-soaked, softened and eventually rotted, and the symptoms were initiated from wounds or cracks occurred at harvest time. Sporangiophores were $850{\sim}1,800{\mu}m$ in length and $12{\sim}23{\mu}m$ in width. Sporangia were globose or hemispheric and $80{\sim}190{\mu}m$ in size. The color of sporangia was white and cottony at first and gradually to brownish black, bearing abundant spores when it matured. Columella were hemispheric and $70{\sim}95{\mu}m$ in size. Sporangiospores were irregular round or oval, brownish-black streaked and $8{\sim}22{\times}6{\sim}10{\mu}m$ in size. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth of the fungus on PDA was 25$^{\circ}C$. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to grape (Vitis vinifera), the causal fungus was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer (Ehrenberg ex. Fr,) Lind. This is the first report of Rhizopus soft rot by R. stolonifer on grape (V. vinifera) in Korea.

  • The Rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) infected 99-100% of a $1000\;m^2$-maize field in Mungyeong City in 2007. Adjacent to the area is a Persimmon orchard where barley crops were grown under the trees as green manure crops and for soil amendments. The barley acted as winter host to the small brown plant hoppers (SBPH) enabling the insects to survive and pass the winter season. The existence of RBSDV was detected and confirmed by RT-PCR using S9 specific primer. Samples of the insect vector SBPH were collected in the area on May 3, June 7 and, August 4 and the results of the RT-PCR analysis revealed viruliferous insect rates of 2.9, 4.8, and 4.4%, respectively. These observed viruliferous insect rates were similar with those detected in RBSDV infected rice fields.
