Objectives: The objective of the study was to review the correlation between self-perceived oral health status and periodontal diseases in elderly Koreans, using data from the $6^{th}$ (2nd year) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2014). Methods: The subjects for this study were a total of 1,454 elderly people aged 65 years or older who responded to the health questionnaires of the $6^{th}$ (2nd year) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2014. Their general characteristics were analyzed using frequency analysis, while a cross-tabulation analysis (${\chi}^2-test$) was performed to understand the correlation with periodontal diseases. To clarify any effect of self-perceived oral health status on periodontal diseases, the selected variables were controlled and subsequently analyzed according to the logistic regression analysis. Results: In terms of the difference between elderly people with periodontal disease and those without periodontal disease, higher prevalence rates of periodontal diseases were found in women, those of younger age, those with lower educational and income levels, those with poorer subjective oral health status, those in the presence of chewing discomfort, those who had a toothbrushing frequency of twice per day, and/or those who had received no oral examination over the previous one year. Regarding the effect of self-perceived oral health status on periodontal diseases, 1.78-fold and 1.74-fold higher prevalence rates of periodontal diseases were shown with poorer subjective oral health status and in the presence of chewing discomfort, respectively. Conclusions: Based upon the results above, it is considered that a better understanding of self-perceived oral health status is necessary for a healthy life of the elderly. Furthermore, constant relevant studies and effective prevention programs intended to moderate the progress of or prevent periodontal diseases in the elderly in communities should be performed and implemented for the sake of better quality of life and oral health.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the perception of calculus removal, an essential factor in periodontal disease in the elderly population. Further, the study aimed to identify the oral hygiene management matters of individuals and to use the information as primary data for preventing dental loss and improving the prevention of chronic diseases. From December 20, 2019, to January 15, 2020, the results of 171 studies on oral hygiene management and awareness of calculus removal among the elderly aged 65 or older in Busan and Gyeongnam are as follows: The elderly with good health appreciated their functional oral health status and showed significant differences (Χ2=298.26, p<.001). Many of the elderly brushing their teeth at least three times a day had a better health status and showed significant differences according to their health status (= 134.42, p <.001). Usually, older people who are in good health have a dental floss (Χ2=89.31, p<.001), and the dental floss were used more often and significantly differed depending o health status (Χ2=92.53, p<.001). The elderly's perception of tartar removal has shown that the overall average out of five points is positive at 3.48. Older female adults were more positive and showed significant differences regarding gender (t=-7.95, p<.001). Senior citizens aged 65 to 70 were more positive about dental removal than those aged 71 or older, with significant differences in age (t=6.65, p<.001). As described above, oral hygiene management for the elderly population needs to develop a periodontal disease prevention program linked to systemic diseases, considering that there are many chronic diseases.
Objectives : This study was to infectify variable the factors influencing oral health behaviors in high school students. Methods : Data were collected from 241 high school students Busan and Kyungnam Province for four weeks in July 2012. The SPSS 18.0 program was used for data analysis, which included t-test, correlation analysis, multiple logistic regression analysis. Results : Positive correlation in the order of social support(r=.381), self-efficiency(r=.309) with perceived benefit of oral health behavior and social support with total heal index(r=.298) are shown. In the contrary, the relation between social support(r=-.400), subjective oral health status(r=-.222) with impairments of oral health behavior have negative one. Experience in three or more tooth brushing has an effect on social support and subjective oral health status(p<.05). Perceived benefit(p<.001) of oral health life and subjective oral health status(p<.05) are affected by recognition of correct tooth brushing. Intake of harmful food on tooth has an effects on perceived benefit, self-efficiency, total health index and subjective oral health status(p<.05). Conclusions : In conclusion, systematic activation of oral health education in school and correct self-activity of oral health will promote oral health of youth.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to compare and investigate oral health status between Korean adults living in Korea and the US. Methods : Subjects were 1,785 persons including 399 Korean adults living in Virginia, US and those from the second year 2011 of the 5th National Health and Nutrition Survey. Darta were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 for frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and post-hoc Tukey. Results : 1. In general characteristics, adult living in Korea revealed higher DT and DMFT than those in the US. 2. In oral health status, adult living in Korea revealed higher DT and DMFT than those in the US. 3. The variables affecting oral health status in Korean adults in the US were age, private health insurance and number of tooth brushing. 4. The variables affecting oral health status in adults in Korea included gender, age, private health insurance, smoking, drinking, use of secondary oral hygienic products and number of tooth brushing. Conclusions : It is necessary to emphasize the importance of oral health care and to establish the oral health education in dental care agencies.
Objectives: This study aimed to validate the moderating effect of oral health on the relationship between perceived health status and health-related quality of life in the elderly and to use this information as primary data to suggest oral health policies for the aged society. Methods: This study included 3,707 subjects aged over 65 years who answered all the variables used in the study model and completed the health questionnaire and screening survey based on the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Baron & Kenny's linear regression analysis using SPSS 22.0 and SPSS Macro Version 3.1 programs was performed to confirm the moderating effect of the number of remaining natural teeth, chewing difficulty, and cardiovascular disease on the relationship between perceived health status and healthrelated quality of life in the elderly. Results: The number of remaining natural teeth, chewing difficulties, and cardiovascular diseases affected the perceived health status of the elderly. As the number of remaining natural teeth increased, the effect of perceived health status on the quality of life in the elderly was buffered. The effect of perceived health status on the quality of life increased with chewing difficulties and the number of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, it was confirmed that chewing difficulties, rather than the number of cardiovascular diseases. had a greater effect on the quality of life in the elderly. Conclusions: Oral health policies and projects are required to ensure oral rehabilitation with dentures and implants and restore chewing function to improve the quality of life of the elderly in Korea.
Background: This study aimed to investigate allergic rhinitis and the relationship between allergic diseases, such as asthma and allergic rhinitis, and dental caries and periodontal disease using the raw data from third year of the 6th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Methods: A total of 3,729 subjects aged over 30 years who underwent examination for allergic diseases and an oral health checkup were selected. The data were analyzed using SPSS IBM SPSS ver. 25.0 (IBM Corp., USA). Composite sample cross correlation and composite sample logistic regression analyses were performed using the composite sample general linear model. Results: On examining the socioeconomic characteristics of the subjects suffering from allergic disease and the relationship between allergic disease and oral health, allergic rhinitis was more frequently found in younger subjects with a higher level of education. Periodontal disease and dental caries were more frequent among female, older age groups, lower income earners, and subjects with a lower level of education (p<0.05). On examining the relationship between the oral health characteristics of the subject and allergic diseases and oral health, allergic rhinitis was more common in subjects with a good oral health status perception than those who answered "bad" to the oral health status question. The community periodontal index of treatment needs (CPITN) score was higher in subjects who answered "poor" to the oral health status question, lower frequency of brushing, and higher in subjects using secondary oral hygiene products; the decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT) index was higher in subjects with a perception of poor oral health status (p<0.05). The DMFT index was high in the asthma group, and the CPITN score was high in the group who answered "no" to allergic rhinitis. Conclusion: There is a relationship between asthma and allergic rhinitis and the DFMT index and CPITN score. Corresponding oral programs for allergic patients need to be developed.

Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square test, correlation analysis, logistic regression using SPSS version 18.0. Results : Dental caries revealed 1.146 times higher than the control group. Risk group showed the following results; gingivitis was 1.317 times higher in risk group and 1.612 times in metabolic syndrome. Dental calculus was 1.532 times higher in risk group and 1.557 times in metabolic syndrome. Mssing teeth were 1.976 higher in metabolic syndrome. Conclusions : Metabolic syndrome risk factors had close correlation to poor raol health status. It is necessary to establish the effective plan for the oral health in workers.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to contribute to providing more effective basic data for adults 'oral health management in their future. Methods: The study investigated factors that influence oral health care and oral health behavior depending on the heterosexual status for about one month from Aug. of 2017 on 20 unmarried adults living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Statistical analysis of the collected data was performed using the SPSS WIN 21.0 statistical program. Results: The factors affecting the oral health behavior were high (p<0.001) while oral hygiene products (p<0.05) and interdental toothbrush (p<0.05) were found to have a positive effect on oral health behavior. However, it was found that the times of brushing were less than three (p<0.05) and the time for brushing was two minutes (p<0.05), which negatively affects oral health behavior. The concern of oral health was high (p<0.001), whiledental hygiene products (p<0.05), interdental toothbrush (p<0.05) and mouth saliva (p<0.05) were found to have positive effects on oral health care. Conclusions:Based on the results above, it was found that the concern and the behavior of oral health increased depending on the heterosexual status. The reason for this is that the motivation for oral care is more likely to be induced to make oneself attractive by making a resignation. Therefore, in order to promote oral health care and oral health activities, it is necessary to precede the motivation.
Objectives: This case - study was conducted to assess the oral health status change of the elderly through visiting oral care interventions based on a community health care project. Methods: Professional dental hygiene treatment and oral health education, including brushing using interdental toothbrushes and sponge brushes, were performed on three senior citizens who received home visiting oral health care benefit. Results: The subject's periodontal conditions improved including gingival inflammation and bleeding. The gingival color tured pink by controlling the dental plaque. Conclusions: Visiting oral health care contributed to the improvement of oral health of the elderly. Therefore, based on the characteristics of the elderly with various systemic diseases, it is necessary to discover various cases that can perform professional and customized visiting oral health care programs.
Background: The elderly in long-term care facilities tend to have a diminished oral health status, with a high prevalence of dental caries and periodontal disease, as reduced cognitive function, joint mobility, and gait ability hinder the performance of oral hygiene. To improve the oral health of the elderly at long-term care facilities, it is necessary to have precise guidelines for oral health care and assessment; however, such guidelines are not readily available. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop an oral care assessment tool with verified reliability and validity. Methods: The participants in this study were 100 elderly patients at a care facilities and 10 clinical dental hygienists. Collected data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics, content validity index, and inter-rater reliability, as well as the analyses of intra-class correlation coefficient. Results: After a review of relevant literature, a preliminary questionnaire comprised of seven questions related to the evaluation of oral health was formed. After revising and supplementing the questions through a content validity test, a total of nine questions were selected. Conclusion: The novel assessment tool developed for the present study is anticipated to allow analyses of the level of problems related to oral health care before routine and professional care. Moreover, regular oral health status check-ups will enable the early diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
