The purpose of this study was to furnish data on the disabled's oral health status of the disabled in Busan, Korea. Material and Methods: Two dentists who were well experienced in caries examination surveyed the oral health status on 793 of disabled men in Busan from March to June in 2000 under natural solar light with plane mirror by the criteria which are suggested by World Health Organization (WHO). Results: The number of present permanent teeth of the disabled are lower than the undisabled. DMF rate and DMFT indices of the disabled were higher than the undisabled. DT rate of the disabled was higher than the undisabled. Conclusions: The development of community oral health care programs for the prevention and treatments of dental caries for the disabled is needed and active administrative policies should be established for the promotion of the disabled's oral health.
Objectives: The objectives of this study were to assess oral health knowledge and behavior levels of community pharmacists as a step toward projecting them to play the role of oral health partners and to confirm pharmacists' willingness to participate in oral health education programs. Methods: t-test and one-way analysis of variance were performed to analyze the data, and correlation analysis was also performed. Results: The mean score for pharmacists' oral health knowledge was 7.29 out of 10. Of the 12 questions asked, the correct answer rate was highest for the question about the effect of smoking cessation on periodontal disease prevention; conversely, the correct answer rate was lowest for the question about the effect of taking medication for gingival infections on periodontal disease prevention. The mean score for pharmacists' oral health behavior was 2.97 out of 4 points. Of all oral health behaviors, brushing twice a day was the most practiced, whereas immediately visiting a dentist in case of an oral health issue was the least practiced. Pharmacists' oral health knowledge and behavior levels showed a weak positive correlation with their intention to participate in oral health education programs. Conclusions: Oral health education programs are necessary to improve community pharmacists' oral health knowledge and behavior.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to reduce the burden on dental hygienists in performing dental hygiene processes in the clinic. This study systematically analyzed dental hygiene problems and dental hygiene planning according to the oral condition of patients by applying an oral health care program based on the dental hygiene process. Methods: This study analyzed influential factors of 17 dental hygiene problems and 12 dental hygiene plans according to the oral health index and charts of 185 patients. This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB No. 1041449-201801-HR-003) of Silla University. The frequency of dental hygiene problems and dental hygiene planning was analyzed and correlations among the oral health index, dental hygiene problems, and dental hygiene planning were analyzed. Results: The higher the bleeding on probing score was, the more scaling was planned. The higher the calculus rate was, the more air-jet and jaw joint disorder prevention education was planned. The higher the O'Leary index was, the more dietary education and air-jet was planned. The higher the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index was, the more air-jet and jaw joint disorder prevention education was planned. The higher the Periodontal Screening and Recording index was, the more scaling and professional tooth cleaning was planned (p<0.05). Conclusions: The burden of oral preventive duties on dental hygienists will be minimized by systematically establishing problems and planning of dental hygiene according to patients' oral health index scores. Therefore, it is expected that dental hygienist can actively use the dental hygiene process in oral health care programs.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness of mothers on their children's oral health and their concern for that by socio-demographic characteristics and the relationship of their awareness of methods of dental-caries prevention to their practice of the methods. Methods : The subjects in this study were 337 guardians of preschoolers at kindergartens and daycare centers. A self-administered survey was conducted from April 25 to May 27, 2011, and the collected data were analyzed by the statistical package SPSS 18.0. Results : 1.Self-rated concern for children's oral health, 87.7 percent and 12.1 percent replied, "So-so." Whether they were working or not and whether they were mainly responsible for child rearing made significant differences to that(p<.05). 2. As to subjective awareness of their children's oral health, the largest group of the mothers answered "So-so." (44.9%) The second replied that their children were in good oral health(40.5%), and the third group in poor oral health(14.2%). 3. The relationship between self-rated concern for their children's oral health and awareness of methods of caries prevention, statistically significant differences were found according to toothbrushing education and sealant(p<.05). There were no statistically significant differences in practice, but application of fluoride was the least. 4. The relationship between self-rated awareness for their children's oral health and awareness of the preventive methods of caries, there were statistically significant gaps in awareness of toothbrushing education(p<.05). In practice, statistically significant gaps were found in practice of toothbrushing education and sugar-intake restriction(p<.01). 5. In regard to the correlation between awareness and practice of the preventive methods of caries, awareness of all the factors involving toothbrushing education, sealant, application of fluoride and restriction of sugar intake had a significant positive correlation to practice of them. Better awareness led to better practice. Conclusions : In order to ensure children's successful oral health care, more authentic education of how to prevent dental caries should be offered by experts such as dental hygienists and dentists. Especially, detailed information on application of fluoride, restriction of sugar intake and pit and sealant should be provided for mothers to help their children to stay away from dental caries.
This study was conducted to prepare the fundamental data on establishing an improvement plan for oral health promotion program, and to assess the effects of prevention to dental caries by incremental oral health care program among students of elementary school. The number of total subjects were 239 students in the care group who were controled incremental oral health care program and 195 students in the control group who were not controled incremental oral health care program. The sealant index was significantly more higher in care group than control group, especially the higher the grade. The sealant rate was significantly higher in care group than control group for all of grade. The DT index was significantly lower in care group than control group for male and female, the caries incidence rate of permanent tooth by gender was lower in male than female. The FT rate was more higher in care group than control group. The dental caries could be prevented very effectively when having continuously treated the incremental oral health care program at school dental clinic among elementary-school students. The author consider that this study will be prepare the fundamental data and contribute to oral health promotion according to a change in oral health behavior among elementary-school students. Therefore, the author recommend to expand applying the incremental oral health care program among students of elementary school.
Background: By regulating the factors that contribute to oral diseases in a healthy way, oral health can be maintained and prevented. Methods: The general characteristics, PHP index, oral health behavior, and clinical periodontal index of each group were calculated by frequency analysis, and a cross-analysis (χ2 test) was conducted to assess the homogeneity of the general characteristics, oral health behavior, and clinical periodontal index of the study subjects. An Oral bacteriological examination was performed by gargling with saliva. Results: The expert periodontal prevention group showed a decrease in the copy number of periodontal disease causative bacteria, and A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, T. forsythus, andT. denticolashowed a significant difference before and after treatment (p=0.021). In the periodontal treatment group, A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, T. forsythus, andT. denticolaall showed a decrease in copy number, but there was no significant difference. Conclusions: This study showed professional periodontal prevention management had some effect on periodontal bacterial reduction.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between dental caries and oral health behaviors in middle and high school students by web-based survey of the ninth(2013) Korean youth risk behavior. Methods: The subjects were 75,149 students from 400 middle schools and 400 high schools. Finally, the survey participation rate was 96.4%(72,435 students from 799 schools) by complex sample design. This study examined the oral health knowledge of childcare teachers and their awareness of the prevention effects against dental caries. The subjects in this study were 433 childcare teachers in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Busan and South Gyeongsang Province, on whom a survey was conducted for five months, beginning in March, 2013. Hospitals (56.6%) were the most common route by which the childcare teachers acquired oral health knowledge. Regarding the distribution of the correct answers on oral health knowledge, every teacher gave the correct answer to the item "When a tooth comes out, it should be kept in milk and then be brought to a dental clinic," and the smallest number of them (35.1%) gave the correct answer to the item "When a tooth comes out, it should be washed with water." Concerning the level of oral health knowledge, the respondents, who worked in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province (p<0.001), who worked in childcare centers with more children (p<0.001), who were younger (p<0.001), and who were junior college graduates (p=0.002) had better oral health knowledge. In regard to the awareness of the prevention effects against dental caries, the respondents who were older (p<0.001) and who were married (p=0.002) were more aware of the prevention effects. According to position and career, teachers who were assistant principals (p=0.023) and had worked for 10 years or more (p=0.009) were more aware of the effects. Therefore, child care teachers should acquire accurate knowledge to improve the oral health of children, and regular training programs for age and education are needed.
