Background: To identify the factors that affect the current status and satisfaction of people with disabilities at community oral care centers. Methods: A structured self-administered survey, including five questions on facility environment, five on usage procedure, four on medical skill, four on care cost, three on friendliness, and three on satisfaction, was administered to 218 residents of the G-disabled community care center. It comprised a Likert 5-point scale (strongly agree, 5 points; agree, 4 points; moderate, 3 points; disagree, 2 points; not at all, 1 point). The reliability of the measurement tool was 0.932 for Cronbach's α. Results: The evaluation of community oral care centers for the disabled showed that the environment was hygienic (4.42±0.73), reservation system was well maintained (4.18±0.95), and the dentist-in-charge was satisfied with the treatment (4.37±0.62). The participants agreed that the details were sufficiently explained (4.29±0.71). However, in terms of medical expenses, the score of "have fully heard the explanation of medical expenses and reductions" was 3.88±0.92. The factors affecting satisfaction were sex, final educational background in the facility environment, usage procedure, and medical skill. Conclusion: To increase the satisfaction of people with disabilities at community oral care centers, it is necessary to establish a facility environment and service according to the patients' need and increase the reduction or exemption benefits between different treatment cost categories. Oral health management policies for the disabled should be developed based on these factors, so that the oral care of vulnerable groups in blind spots can be maintained.

The people with disabilities living in residential facilities have more difficulty in caring oral hygiene than those living at home. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the recent 2014 dental treatment records of free mobile dental clinic service for disabled people in Korea. 203 disabled living in residential facilities participated in mobile dental clinic. Patients classified according to types of disability. Mental retardation were 75.3%, mental disorder were 6.0%, crippled disorder were 7.4%, brain disorder were 6.5%, visual disorder were1.4%, auditory and speech disorder were 2.3% and autism disorder were 0.9%. Performed treatments were 99 scaling and curettage, 88 fluoride varnish and TBI, 4 extraction, 1 endodontic treatment, 16 caries control (resin filling, GI filling), 1 denture repair and 8 refuse the treatment. Free mobile dental clinic can not provide complex dental treatment. So, the organization should systemize advanced dental treatment and regular preventive programs. Furthermore, we need to have a more concerns about the people with disabilities living in residential facilities and constantly participate on a dental voluntary work.

This study examined living rehabilitation teachers of disability facilities in Kyungkido to determine the status of the personal and oral hygiene of the disabled. The results are as follows. First, the personal hygiene of residential disabled people was positively correlated with voluntary toothbrushing, recognition of the importance of toothbrushing, and finding of their own toothbrush. Second, the difficulties related to the oral hygiene practice of residents with disabilities were found to be carrying out abnormalities in their toothbrush and oral examinations at dental medical institutions. In addition, in the spontaneous performance, they did not do well in gum massage and in restraining sugary foods. Third, voluntary toothbrushing was positively correlated with training on toothbrushing, and toothbrushing for more than 3 minutes and the rolling method toothbrushing were positively correlated with the supplement of oral health materials. Therefore, a dental hygiene management program is required continuously for living rehabilitation teachers and the disabled.

This study aims to help utilize the dental treatment institutions for the disabled and provide high quality of medical services in the future by identifying the satisfaction factors for the patients of the dental clinics for the disabled. As a study method, surveys were completed 200 patients who visited the dental hospital for the disabled. Among these, the surveys from 187 patients were statistically analyzed. The main findings of this study are as follow. Since the study showed that there were differences in the satisfaction factors between the disabled and non-disabled people, subsequent studies needs to be done to develop measuring tools to accurately accommodate the satisfaction factors of the disabled. In addition, as the low spatial accessibility in terms of distance and location was found in this study, more dental treatment institutions for the disabled are required. In the meantime, the survey results found that the most satisfactory aspect was the lower treatment cost compared to other clinics, and that the most important factor when choosing a clinic was also treatment. In addition, given the fact that the group that took a prosthetic treatment, which was non-insured treatment, showed higher satisfaction compared to the group that did not, it suggests that the economic burden plays an important role for the dental treatment of the disabled.
Objectives : The purpose of our study was to examine the relationship of oral health status such as dental caries and the performance of dietary action guides with six items. Methods : Oral examination and self-administrated questionnaire were conducted on 87 disabled students, aged 6-19 who were attending special school in the area of the metropolitan Seoul. Two logistic regression models to estimate odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were used to investigate the association dental caries experience and the performance of dietary action guides after controlling for potential confounders. Results : The proportion of study subjects with caries were 37.9%, 26.9%(male) and 54.3%(female), respectively(p<0.05). There was significantly difference the subjects with caries and perceived oral health status(p<0.01). Among the dietary action guides items, skipping breakfast and not avoiding waste food were significantly higher in the proportion of subjects' caries(p<0.05, p<0.01, respectively). The avoiding waste food groups had more possibility of having caries significantly(p<0.05), even after controlling gender, and perceived oral health status. Conclusions : These results indicate that oral health promotion policy with dietary action guides should be strengthened for support of disabled student's dental health.
In this study, disabled people's life quality according to their use of dental healthcare services were examined, and the factors that influence their life quality were examined. The subjects in this study were 198 domestic disabled people in Jeollabuk-do, on whom a survey was conducted from May 1 to June 1, 2008. After the collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 12.0 program, the following findings were acquired: 1. 68.2% of the subjects had an experience of using dental service institutes. Over 80.0% of the physically disabled, the mentally handicapped, and the sensory-disturbance sufferers each used dental service institutes in their locations. Regarding the reason for visiting dental service institutes, 43.4% of the physically disabled visited for regular examination (the largest group for that reason), followed by the mentally handicapped with 37.9%. 43.5% of the sensory-disturbance sufferers visited for pain and fracture. 2. The subjects' life quality level relating to oral health was found to be an average 3.39 point score. There was a statistically significant difference in their life quality levels in terms of demographic features, such as age, religion, marriage/non-marriage, education, and subjective health status variables. Those experienced in using dental service institutes enjoyed higher levels of life quality (p=.011). And, with regard to disability characteristics, the degree of disability and the period of disability influenced the quality of life with a statistical significance. 3. Regarding variables influencing the life quality of subjects, in terms of general characteristic variables, subjective health status were influential variables, and in terms of characteristic variables relating to the use of dental clinics and disability, the experience of using dental service institutes influenced the quality of life. In conclusion, nationwide efforts to nurture separate dental personnels responsible for the disabled, to expand relevant facilities and to improve the health care insurance are required to promote the oral health of domestic disabled people's.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between variables associated with oral health status in psychiatric patients and to provide basic information on oral health education program development for the psychiatric patients. Methods : Subjects were 151 psychiatric patients who filled out the structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed for independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and hierarchical multiple regression by using SPSS Win Program 18.0 version. Results : Higher DMFT index was shown in the older age(p<0.001) and low perceived oral health group(p<0.001). Higher DMFT index included no tooth brushing after breakfast(p=0.045), wrong tooth brushing method(p<0.001). Chewing discomfort(p=0.027) and denture(p=0.027) were closely related to higher DMFT index. Bread(p=0.033) and snack(p<0.001) increased DMFT index. Factors affecting oral health status were age, denture, snack and bread. The explanation power of the final model was 29.4%. Conclusions : Dietary control for the psychiatric patients is very important to prevent dental caries. Tooth brushing and use of oral hygiene devices can improve good oral health care. Furthermore, this result can improve the oral health care for the disabled people.

Objectives: Currently, oral health of the disabled is taken care of by the social workers, not by dental hygienists, who are the oral health professional in this area. Therefore, we aim to enhance the equity of oral health for the disabled by providing the correct oral health care method to social workers residing in the welfare facility for the disabled. Methods: Four dental hygienists and four social workers were given the class I intellectual disabilities living in 'o' welfare facilities for disabled people in Songpa-gu, Seoul from April 13, 2019 to April 20, 2019. Patient Hygiene Performance(PHP) Index were measured and compared. In advance, the social workers were taught brushing (Rolling method), and the method of brushing and measuring tools were integrated. Results: Twice a total of dental hygienists and social workers practiced toothbrushing(Rolling method) for the class I intellectual disabilities who is a person to be brushed. When comparing the Patient Hygiene Performance(PHP) Index after the second round, the result shows that both the first and second dental hygienists' Patient Hygiene Performance(PHP) Index is lower. Conclusions: Comparing oral health knowledge level and Patient Hygiene Performance(PHP) index of dental hygienist and social workers, the result shows that dental hygienist has higher oral health care ability. Therefore, the dental hygienist should be placed in welfare facility for the disabled as an expert in oral health management to create an environment in which the disabled and social workers can be trained. In addition, the curriculum of the college that nurtures the dental hygienists should have a course to understand the characteristics of the disabled person in order to enhance the professionalism of dental hygienists.

Patients with disabilities are a significant segment of Korea population. However, they encounter more challenges when seeking dental care. So, dentists and students who are future dental providers should have a responsibility to provide oral care services for them. In this study, we hypothesize that the education of special care dentistry may influence positive attitudes of the disabled. The attitudes are influenced by demographic variables such as gender, religion, experience of volunteer activities and marital status. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore the change of attitudes of students towards people with disabilities between before and after class of special care dentistry. 72 students enrolled at the Kyung Hee University were surveyed. All participants attended class of Special Care dentistry in the third grade. The survey was conducted two times, just before class and after class. The attitudes of students were assessed using the well-documented ATDP (Attitude Toward Disabled Person)-O(Original) scale and MAS (Multidimensional Attitudes Scales Toward Persons with Disabilities) scale through the methodology of questionnaires. The results indicated that gender, experience of volunteer activities and marital status did not affect their ATDP and MAS score. In religious affiliation, only, there were statistically significant difference in student attitudes between before and after class of Special care dentistry. It means that habitual religious activity may offer stronger effects on student's attitude than short-term education. Therefore, long-term and specific educational experiences are needed to promote positive attitudes for people with disability.

The purpose of study was to investigate the oral health care status in institutions and special schools for the disabled in Korea. Nurses in 123 institutions and nurse-teachers in 102 special schools were asked to fill questionnaires regarding periodic oral examination, preventive dental programs. and dental treatment. The results of this study were as follow. 1. 56.8% of institutions implemented regular oral examinations and all of special schools did it twice a year. 2. Preventive programs for dental caries were done in 69.1% of the institutions and 86.3% of the special schools. Programs included regular toothbrushing and dental health education. 3. Dental treatment was done in 84.2% of the institutions and 39.2% of the special schools. Institutions utilized private dental clinics(60.2%), public health centers(16.8%), volunteers(15.3%), and dental hospitals. 4. 17.7% of the institutions experienced the refusal to treat the disabled by private dental clinics.
