Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate oral health status according to use of oral care products in the adult population and determine methods for improving oral health status. Methods: The date of 'The fifth korean national health and nutrition examination survey 2011' was analyzed for this study. The questionnaire was measured regarding oral care products, Oral health status and socio-economic characteristics. For statistical analysis, the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 19.0 for Windows was used. We determined frequencies, percentage and determining statistical significance using multiple regression analysis. Results: General characteristics and oral care products showed differences in DMFT associated with residence, gender, age, education, dental floss, etc(waterpic, hi-tech toothbrush, denture care products), in FS-T associated with residence, gender, age, income level, education, health insurance, dental floss, Interdental brush, etc, in T-health associated with residence, age, education, health insurance, Interdental brush, etc. Conclusion: In conclusion, in order to promote oral health status of the adult have to suitable selection and accurate usage of oral care products. Education and program in oral care products for the adult should be needed.
Purpose: The aim of the study was to identify effects of oral care protocol on bacterial floras of the oral cavity and oral health status of intubated patients in an intensive care unit. Methods: The participants were 60 intubated patients who were recruited from an intensive care unit of a university hospital from Dec. 28, 2010 to Mar. 25, 2011. The participants were randomly assigned into 3 groups of 20 patients according to the application time of oral care (1-minute oral care, 2-minute oral care, and 3-minute oral care groups). The numbers of bacterial flora colonies in the oral cavity was assessed before and after the oral care. Oral health status was assessed using a Korean version of the Oral Assessment Guide developed by Elier et al. originally. Results: The numbers of bacterial flora colonies were less after oral care than those before the care, but there was no significant differences among the 3 groups after the care. Oral health status was better after the oral care than it was before the care, but there was also no significant differences among the 3 groups. Conclusion: If well-trained nurses perform oral care for 1 minute using a chlorhexidine swab on intubated patients, the numbers of bacterial flora colonies will be reduced and healthy oral status will be maintained.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate whether there were differences among three oral care protocols on participants' oral health status (oral status, dry mouth, halitosis, saliva pH, microorganism growth in oral cavity) and tooth stain. The three protocols were: 1) oral solution of 4% normal saline, 2) 0.1% Chlorhexidine and 3) Tantum. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was utilized. A total of 55 elderly patients residing at long-term care facilities(19 in the 4% normal saline group, 17 in the 0.1% Chlorhexidine group, 19 in the Tantum group) received oral care daily for four weeks. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 22.0 program. Results: The halitosis (${\chi}^2=10.71$, p=.005) and saliva pH (${\chi}^2=6.84$, p=.033) scores were significantly improved after the oral care with 4% normal saline. Conclusion: These findings indicate that if elderly patients in long-term care facilities have complaint of the discomfort of using Chlorhexidine or Tantum, 4% normal saline is as effective at the other two. This can also be cost effective as there were no differences among the protocols in oral status, dry mouth, tooth stain or microorganism growth in oral cavity.

Purpose: This study compared the effects of three oral care methods on thirst and oral status in patients after general anesthesia surgery. Methods: Sixty five surgical patients were prospectively randomized into three groups. Each group received one of three oral care methods: wet water gauze, frozen water gauze, or frozen normal saline gauze. The outcomes of thirst and oral status were assessed three times by trained investigators blinded to the oral care methods. Assessment times were right after a participant's arrival to his/her room, and at 30 and 60 minutes after the pre-test. Results: The levels of thirst and oral status were significantly improved as time passed in all three oral care methods. While the level of thirst was not significantly different between the three groups, the level of oral status was significantly better with wet water gauze than frozen gauze groups, soaked in either water or normal saline. Conclusion: We recommend nurses choose one of three oral care methods based on patients' preferences since all three oral care methods showed similar effects in improving postoperative patients' levels of thirst and oral status.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effectiveness of oral care protocol including individual oral care education, cryotherapy and benzydamine gargling on oral cavity status and self-care performance in solid cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. Thirty-one patients were enrolled by convenience sampling in this study and allocated to control (n=18) and experimental group (n=13). In the intervention group, individual oral care education, oral cryotherapy and benzydamine gargling were applied, while the control group received pre-existed oral care. Oral cavity status and self-oral care behavior were measured in five periods. The data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test, Friedman test, and Chi-square test. There was no significant difference in oral cavity status between the groups. But the two groups showed the poorest oral cavity status on $14^{th}$ day. Self-care behavior was significantly higher in the intervention group than the control group. This effect had maintained for 4months after completion of study. The results showed that individual oral care education by oncology nurse is effective to encourage patients to do self-care behavior and a further study is needed to explore the effect of cryotherapy and benzydamine gargling on oral cavity status of patient with solid tumor.
Objectives: This case study was conducted to assess the changes in the oral health status of older individuals with hearing and visual impairments through home oral health care based on community care. Methods: The participants were two older adults with hearing and visual impairments. Through home visits, an oral health intervention program, including oral hygiene care and training on strengthening of oral function, was conducted once a week for 5 months. Dental hygienists performed special oral health interventions such as dental plaque control through individual tooth brushing and interdental care, training on strengthening of intraoral and extraoral muscle function, and denture care for the individuals with visual-hearing impairments. Results: The overall periodontal health status and oral muscle function improved in older adults with hearing and visual impairments. In the case of the visually impaired individuals, changes in the oral health status were oral mucosal moisture (30.1 and 37.2 points before and after intervention, respectively), salivary secretion (3.5 and 4.0 cm before and after intervention, respectively), and maximum tongue pressure (20.5 and 26.2 kPa before and after intervention, respectively). Changes in the oral health status of the hearing impaired individuals increased from 28.3 points before the intervention to 38.4 points after the intervention, and the maximum tongue pressure increased from 1.85 kPa to 23.5 kPa after the intervention. Conclusions: Oral health intervention activities contributed to improving the periodontal health and oral function of older adults with hearing and visual impairments. To improve their overall and oral health, it is necessary to prepare measures to activate customized oral health intervention programs.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to contribute to the development of an oral hygiene care program for patients with dementia by understanding the oral care status and oral health knowledge of care workers and caregivers with regard to patients with dementia. Methods: For about two months from May to June 2018, a survey of care workers and caregivers working in long-term nursing homes and elderly-specialized nursing hospitals was performed, and 442 people were selected for the final analysis. The frequency and percentage were calculated to understand the oral care status and oral health knowledge regarding patients with dementia, and an independent t-test was conducted to determine the difference between the elderly oral health knowledge of care workers and caregivers. Multiple regression analysis was also carried out to examine factors affecting elderly oral health knowledge. Results: With respect to the factor of oral health education in elderly oral health knowledge, oral health knowledge was shown to be highest when participants responded that education was unnecessary (p<0.001), and regarding the will to participate in oral health education, oral health knowledge was highest when participants responded as having no desire to participate (p<0.05). Conclusions: These results suggest that a standard manual should be developed for the accurate and qualitative management of oral hygiene care tasks performed by care workers and caregivers who are in charge of oral care for patients with dementia in order to provide continuous and systematic oral care.
The author aims at first securing basic material required for developing and operating proper oral health care education programs though making an investigation into the undergraduates of S College of Education on the actual status of oral health care and perceptions of oral health care education. The obtained results were as follows 1. In the actual status of oral care based on whether or not they have experiences in taking oral health care education, undergraduates with teeth brushing for more than three minutes a time were found to be 25.9% and 15.7% respectively according to the existence and nonexistence of experiences in the education(pM0.020), and undergraduates with teeth brushing in a circular motion was found to be 64.7% and 51.7% respectively, showing statistically significant differences(pM0.015). 2. In the actual status of preventative oral care according to whether or not they have experiences in taking oral care education, degrees of awareness of the usefulness of dental cleansers among the undergraduates were found to be 37.6% and 21.5% respectively according to the existence and nonexistence of experiences in the education(pM0.001), undergraduates with experiences in scaling were found to be 51.8% and 34.9% respectively(pM0.002) and undergraduates with experiences in having dental sealants were found to be 26.5% and 16.9%(pM0.031), showing statistically significant differences. 3. In the survey on perceptions of oral health care according to the existence and nonexistence of experiences in oral health care education, it was revealed that the case that they indicated 'the necessity of oral health care education' was 87.1% and 64.0% respectively according to the existence and nonexistence of the experience(pM0.000), and undergraduates intended to 'participate in oral care education for students(at mid and high schools and so on) after being teachers' were 77.6% and 65.7% respectively, showing statistically significant differences(pM0.011). 4. In general characteristics according to awareness of the necessity of cultivating oral health professionals, groups with awareness of the necessity consisted of 31.8% of freshmen and juniors(pM0.001), 55.69b of female undergraduates(pM0.001), 80.8% of non-smokers(pM0.012), 38.9% of large city residents(pM0.002) and 32.3% of undergraduates living in their own houses (pM0.028), showing statistically significant differences.
Purpose. Infant oral health care forms the basis of lifelong health, and the role of child care teachers in contributing to the quality level in the formation of correct habits at this time throughout the infant's health care and education is very important. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the perceived oral health status of nursery teachers and the necessity of oral health education, and to emphasize that the oral health of teachers is closely related to the oral health of infants and young children. Methods. This study was conducted from May to June 2018 by surveying private nursery teachers in some parts of Gyeongsangbuk-do province by using the self-entry method. The research tools consisted of the general characteristics of subjects, subjective oral health status, oral health practice, oral health education awareness, and oral health education needs. We used shceffe as a post hoc test to compare the differences between groups after frequency analysis, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA analysis. The linear regression analysis was conducted to determine the relationship between perceived oral health status, oral health practice and awareness, and oral health education needs. The statistical level was .05. Results. According to the results of this study, the oral health related practice according to the demographic characteristics is at the final education level, and the oral health related awareness is age, marital status and oral health education needs. The results showed statistically significant differences in final educational attainment and cohabitation. Regarding the relationship between perceived oral health status, oral health related practice and awareness, and oral health education needs There were significant differences in oral health practice(β =.329) and oral health education needs (β =.158). Conclusion. Based on the above results, the child care facility can emphasize the importance of the role of the child care teacher in the oral health care of infants, and the basic data for the establishment of the child care management program in the future by reflecting the role of the teacher in the development of the child care management program of the child care facility. I want to use as.
Purpose: The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of oral care using 0.1% chlorhexidine and tantum solution on oral status and incidence of oral pathogens among intubated ICU patients. Methods: The study subjects were 26 intubated patients of MICU in a university hospital. Oral care was provided with 0.1% chlorhexidine solution to the experimental group (n=12) and with tantum solution to the control group (n=14), 3 times a day for 6 days. After the intervention, the oral status of each subject was checked using structured method, and oral swab culture was done to count colonized bacterial pathogens. Results: The mean oral status score of experimental group was significantly higher than that of control group (U=42.50, p=.031). The mean incidence of oral pathogens in experimental group was smaller than that of control group, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The oral care with 0.1% chlorhexidine solution is more effective than with tantum solution for improving oral status of intubated ICU patients. However, additional studies with larger sample size will be needed to figure out it's effects on the incidence of oral pathogens.
