  • Response surface methodology(RSM) was applied in roasting processes of Polygonatum odoratum roots in order to monitor Hunter color parameters and to optimize organoleptic properties of the tea. In roasting processing based on the central composite design with variations in roasting temperature (110~19$0^{\circ}C$) and roasting time(15~75min), coefficients of determinations($R^{2}$) of the models were above 0.9827(p<0.01) in Hunter color parameters and above 0.7748 in organoleptic properties. Hunter color L and $\Delta$E values of the powdered samples decreased with the roasting processes, whereas Hunter color a and b values increased up to around 59 min at 136$^{\circ}C$ and thereafter showed a decreased tendency. Organoleptic qualities on color, taste and aroma of Polygonatum odoratum tea were improved along with roasting processes, thereby estimating the optimum roasting conditions by RSM for the maximized qualities of organoleptic properties as a range from 127$^{\circ}C$ to 135$^{\circ}C$ and from 60min to 66 min. Hunter color a value(redness) was found to generate a similar response surface to that of organoleptic properties, showing the possibility of quality index in roasting processes of Polygonatum odoratum roots.

  • XRF, EDX, IR analysis was conducted to figure the effect of Fe to blacken the waterlogged wood. The results showed that investigated soil contained more Fe than normal soil by XRF analysis and wood ash contained more sulfur and Fe than any other element by EDX analysis. C-H and C-O peaks were significantly reduced at the surface of wood where is blackened part of waterlogged wood by IR analysis. The optimum condition to remove Fe from waterlogged wood by EDTA was investigated. To do this, removed concentration of Fe was measured at various concentration of EDTA-2Na. The optimum pH of EDTA-2Na was figured to be 4.1 to 4.3 and as the concentration of EDTA was increasing, extracted concentration of Fe was also increased. In the case of 0.4 wt% of EDTA-2Na, 700ppm of Fe was eliminated and was stabilized after 48 hours time lapse. In the case of EDTA-3Na, the optimum pH was 7 to 8, and 10 ppm of Fe was eliminated at 0.4 wt% of EDTA-3Na. In the case of EDTA-4Na, the optimum pH was 10 to 11, and 120 ppm of Fe was eliminated at 0.4 wt% of EDTA-4Na.

  • Maximum density and optimum moisture content of a soil may be one of the very important properties to be specified in the design of earth structures and their works. However, the determination of these soil properties may not be done without the necessary equipment and time-consuming field tests. This study was conducted to develop an easier method by determing the relations between the natural moisture content and optimum moisture content and between maximum density and optimum moisture content so determined. These velations are remarkably defferent according to the areas where the samples were taken, and thus analysis of the experimental results are shown by regions as follows: Eastern Districs:{{{{Tdmax= { 1} over {0.0090Wopt+0.417 } ( delta = +- 0.042, gamma =0.92) Wopt=0.251WN+8.5( delta = +- 2.41%, gamma =0.87) }}}} Southern Districts: {{{{Tdmax= { 1} over {0.0088Wopt+0.412 } (delta = +- 0.083, gamma =0.89) Wopt=0.332WN+8.42(delta = +- 3.41%, gamma =0.84)}}}}Central Districtsl1): {{{{Tdmax= { 1} over {0.0112Wopt+0.383} ( delta = +- 0.052, gamma =0.97) Wopt=0.758WN+2.606( delta = +- 4.72%, gamma =0.79)}}}}($\delta$:Standard Deviation, ${\gamma}$:Correlation Coefficient)

  • Thickness of damping layer in sandwich plate needs to be optimized in order to make modal loss factor of the sandwich plate maximum. Since previous studies were interested in noise reductions over high frequency range, the modal properties were derived based on simply supported boundaries. This conventional formula is approximately applicable to other boundary conditions over high frequency range only. The purpose of this study is to propose a method to determine optimum damping layer thickness of sandwich plate for maximum modal damping in low frequency range when the boundary condition is not a simple support. The conventional RKU equation based on simply supported boundary is modified to reflect other boundary conditions and the modified RKU equation is subsequently applied to determine the optimum damping layer thickness for arbitrary conditions. In order to reflect frequency-dependent characteristics of elastic modulus of the damping layer, an iteration method is proposed in determining the modal properties. Test results on sandwich plates for optimum damping layer thickness are compared with predictions by the proposed method and conventional method.

  • The objective of this study is to provide a simple methodology to find optimum processing conditions to fabricate sub-micron structured DVD-RAM substrates with superb optical and geometrical properties. It was fecund that the birefringence, which is regarded as one of the most important optical properties for an optical disk, was very sensitive to the mold wall temperature history. Also, the integrity of the replication, represented by the land-groove structure and the radial tilt were influenced by the mold temperature and the compression pressure. A set of optimum conditions were obtained by applying Design of Experiment and the objective functions composed of three different objectives.

  • This study was done in order to monitor the quality properties of the granule using Bokbunja (Rubus coreanus Miquel) extracts. In order to prepare the granule depending on operational parameters such as content of Bokbunja extract ($X_1$, 0.4~1.2 g), sugar content ($X_2$, 6~10 g) and citric acid content ($X_3$, 0.1~0.3 g), a response surface methodology was applied to monitor the optimum recipes on the organoleptic properties and Hunter's color. The optimum recipe on the organoleptic color showed extract content of 0.96 g, sugar content of 7.05 g and citric acid content of 0.232 g. The optimum recipe on the organoleptic flavor showed extract content of 0.86 g, sugar content of 6.04 g and citric acid content of 0.215 g. The optimum recipe on the organoleptic taste showed extract content of 0.92 g, sugar content of 6.39 g and citric acid content of 0.251 g. The optimum recipe on the overall palatability showed extract content of 0.86 g, sugar content of 6.65 g and citric acid content of 0.272 g. The response surface of the Hunter's color b value was similar to the response of the overall palatability; therefore, the optimum conditions accepted by the consumers were 0.8 g Bokbunja extract content and 0.6 g sugar content in the Hunter's color a value of 6.0.

  • The effects of alloying elements(Mo, Cu, Ni) and austempering temperature conditions on the microstructural morphologies and mechanical properties in austempered ductile cast iron has been investigated. The austempering at $350^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs after austenitizing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in all specimens with various alloying elements was optimum because the good combination of tensile and yield strength, hardness and impact value was obtained. The microstructures of these ADIs treated by a forementioned austempering condition are nearly a mixture type of needle and feathery bainite. Among those alloys, Mo-Cu alloyed DCI had the best optimum mechanical properties of hardness and toughness for automobile parts by austempering treatment for 2hrs at $900^{\circ}C$ followed by $350^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs.

  • This paper addresses a method for structural optimum design of composite rotor blade. The basic model of a composite helicopter main rotor blade is designed and its parameters determining the structural/dynamic properties are studied. Through the investigation of flap/lag/torsional stiffness, the structural properties of the model are analyzed. In this study, helicopter rotor blades are analyzed by using VABS. The computer program VABS (Variational Asymptotic Beam Section Analysis) uses the variational asymptotic method to split a three-dimensional nonlinear elasticity problem into a two dimensional cross-sectional analysis and a one-dimensional nonlinear beam problem. This is accomplished by taking advantage of certain small parameters inherent to beam-like structures. In addition, the rotational stability of the blade is estimated by the frequency diagram from FE analysis(MSC.Patran/Nastran) to understand its vibrational property. From the result, design parameters to determine and optimize the properties of the model are presented.

  • The purpose of this experimental research is to investigate the mechanical properties of ordinary strength and high strength concrete containing waste glass powder. For this purpose, after production of concrete containing waste glass powder for different unit weight of binder and placement ratio of waste glass powder, optimum mixing proportions of them was determined, and then mechanical properties such as static modulus of elasticity as well as compressive, tensile and flexural strength were tested and analyzed for concrete produced according to optimum mixing proportions. As a result, the concrete containing waste glass powder has as excellent workability and strength, it's strengths are analogus to those of silica fume, it's workability is somewhat better than that of silica fume.
