  • Yet logistics base in China has a refrigerated storage facilities installed areas, the number of those is very limited and is generally insufficient. According to these especial points, a new construction cold chain logistics network design strategy is required from how to use the existing refrigerated warehouses to new issue. For example, however refrigerated storage facility is supplied, can it satisfy all demand of this area? Then does it have optimized location of this area? If future demand expansion, adding that already other refrigerated storage facilities matter? Or, add another refrigerated facilities, optimum cold chain established a network matter? So on. Above problems can be occurred. In order to solve facing many of these issues of distribution network, northeast area in China has been selected as a subject, and we designed a new cold chain distribution network.

  • Research and Development has a property that involves uncertainity and risk in itself. Therefore, in order to scheduling of R & D activity, it Is needed of a certain probabilistic network technique with due regard to feedback process used to occur in the R & D proceeding. It is GERT that was developed as the need arises . In this study, the network structure of GERT-I and GERT-II was combined and then simulation analysis was used to it. According to that analysis , an advanced GERT model which covers the following stochastic problems was examined. 1 Evaluating success feasibility under the complex condition (time and cost). 2 Selecting acceptance range for the worst. 3. Selecting optimum path on basis of time, cost and success. 4. Evaluating project utility among the project alternatives. It is for managing R&D projects more effectively.

  • Many algorithms to find a minimum cost design of water distribution network (WDN) have been developed during the last decades. Most of them have tried to optimize cost only while satisfying other constraining conditions. For this, a certain degree of simplification is required in their calculation process which inevitably limits the real application of the algorithms, especially, to large networks. In this paper, an optimum design method using the Genetic Algorithms (GA) is developed which is designed to increase the applicability, especially for the real world large WDN. The increased to applicability is due to the inherent characteristics of GA consisting of selection, reproduction, crossover and mutation. Just for illustration, the GA method is applied to find an optimal solution of the New York City water supply tunnel. For the calculation, the parameter of population size and generation number is fixed to 100 and the probability of crossover is 0.7, the probability of mutation is 0.01. The yielded optimal design is found to be superior to the least cost design obtained from the Linear Program method by $4.276 million.

  • A mobile terminal will expect a number of handoffs within its call duration. In the event of a mobile call, when a mobile node moves from one cell to another, it should connect to another access point within its range. In case there is a lack of support of its own network, it must changeover to another base station. In the event of moving on to another network, quality of service parameters need to be considered. In our study we have used the Markov decision process approach for a seamless handoff as it gives the optimum results for selecting a network when compared to other multiple attribute decision making processes. We have used the network cost function for selecting the network for handoff and the connection reward function, which is based on the values of the quality of service parameters. We have also examined the constant bit rate and transmission control protocol packet delivery ratio. We used the policy iteration algorithm for determining the optimal policy. Our enhanced handoff algorithm outperforms other previous multiple attribute decision making methods.

  • Genetic Algorithm (GA) consists of selection, reproduction, crossover and mutation processes and many parameters including population size, generation number, the probability of crossover (Pc) and the probability of mutation (Pm). Determining values of the parameters is found critical in the whole optimization process and a sensitivity analysis with them seems mandatory. This paper tries to demonstrate such importance of sensitivity analysis of GA using an example water supply tunnel network of the New York City. For optimization of the network with GA, Pc and Pm vary from 0.5 to 0.9 by an increment of 0.1 and from 0.01 to 0.05 by an increment of 0.01, respectively, while fixing both the population size and the generation number to 100. This sensitivity analysis results in an optimum design of 22.3879 million dollars at the values of 0.8 and 0.01 for Pc and Pm, respectively. In addition, the probability of recombination (Pr) is introduced to check its applicability in the GA optimization of water distribution network. When Pr is 0.05 with the same values of Pc and Pm as above, the optimum design costs 20.9077 million dollars. This is lower than the cost of 22.3879 million dollars for the case of not using Pr by 6.6%. These results indicate that conducting a sensitivity analysis with parameter values and using Pr are useful in the optimization of WDN.

  • Optimum design of water distribution network(WDN) in many times means just reducing redundancy. Given only a few situations are taken into consideration for such design, WDN deprived of inherited redundancy may not work properly in some unconsidered cases. Quantifying redundancy and incorporating it into the optimal design process will be a way of overcoming just reduction of redundancy. Expected shortage is developed as a reliability surrogate in WDN. It is an indicator of the frequency, duration and severity of failure. Using this surrogate, Expected Shortage Optimization Model (ESOM) is developed. ESOM is tested with an example network and results are analyzed and compared with those from other reliability models. The analysis results indicate that expected shortage is a quantitative surrogate measure, especially, good in comparing different designs and obtaining tradeoff between cost and. reliability. In addition, compared other models, ESOM is also proved useful in optimizing WDN with reliability and powerful in controlling reliability directly in the optimization process, even if computational burden is high. Future studies are suggested which focus on how to increase applicability and flexibility of ESOM.

  • To realize a highly reliable satellite-base data distribution system efficiently, a hierarchical distributed control network which utilizers a sub control station(SCS) in addition to a hub and a user station(US) is proposed and evaluated. The results show that there exists an optimum number of sub control stations that minimizes the polling processing time as a parameter of the processing time ratio between US-SCS and SCS-CS links. From a viewpoint of the control network cost, it is shown that the cost can be less compared to the conventional one, when the communication cost between the US and SCS is slightly reduced.

  • Recently, Tang and Chanson proposed a minimum cost distribution model for replicated Web contents subject to an expiration-based consistency management. Their model is a progress in that it can consider multiple replicas via the network of servers located on the Web. The proposed greedy heuristic, however, has an undesirable feature that the solution tends to converge a local optimum at an early stage of the algorithm. in this paper, we propose an algorithm based on a simple idea of preventing the early local convergence. The new algorithm provides solutions whose cost are, on the average, 27$\%$ lower than in the previous algorithm.

  • This study was conducted to provide the basic policy information for establishing efficient forest-road networks. Synthetic forest-road networks that consist of main and spur roads and forest-road networks with only main road (hereafter called "main-road network") were planned for the five forest-road experimental districts of Korea Forest Service in this study. Road density of the synthetic forest-road networks was calculated and compared with the road density of the main-road networks. The results showed that the optimum road density of the synthetic forest-road networks was 10.1~15.9 m/ha, and the road density of the main-road networks was 8.4~12.4 m/ha. The construction cost of the synthetic forest-road networks was estimated about 1~8% lower than the main-road networks, while the road density was 20~30% greater than the main-road networks. As timber volume and hauling cost increased, the optimum road density of the synthetic forest-road networks increased, within which the road density of highstandard main road rapidly increased. On the other hand, the spur road density increased with slope gradient.

  • The overall objectives for Korean railway system of the future are speedup, capacity management, increase safety, environmental protection. and enhancement efficiency. To achieve these, interconnection within the railway system must be optimised and designed on a customer-friendly basis. This principles applies to both passenger and freight traffic. for which cost-effective and time-efficient facilities must be provided. As the result. Korean railway network modernization is based on seeking out optimum conditions for improving railway business.
