Optimum Environmental Conditions for Composting of Livestock Manure (축분의 퇴비화를 위한 최적 환경조건)

  • The composting process is a suitable to dispose the livestock manure in terms of resources recovery. However the performence of composting process is greatly affected by the environmental conditions such as characteristics of manure, type of the bulking agent, initial moisture contents, temperature, recycle and so on. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the optimum environmental conditions of composting process for livestock manures. The analytical results indicated that no bulking agent was necessary for the cow manure because of the proper C/N ratio. However the pig manure required a bulking agent since the pig manure had not only low in C/N ration but poor ventilation characteristics. In addtion, the initial miosture content for optimum composting appeared to be about 60%. The temperature control was also an essential factor to enhance the activity of thermophilic microorganisms in the laboratory composting unit. It was further found that the recycle of composts may contributed the completion of composting precess as well as C/N ratio reduction and moisture control.

Quality Characteristics of Sun-dried Salt and added with Cheongyang Hot Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Juice (청양고추 착즙액을 첨가한 천일염의 품질특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the quality characteristics of sun-dried salt prepared with added Cheongyang hot pepper juice(CPJ). The moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, and crude ash contents of the CPJ were 84.36%, 2.27%, 1.41%, and 0.67% respectively. The moisture content, yellowness, capsaicin, and dihydrocapsaicin of sun-dried salt increased according to the level of added CPJ, whereas the NaCl, pH, lightness, and redness value increased. The sensory evaluation results showed that preferences for the sun-dried salt increased as CPJ, approached their optimum value and decreased as they exceeded optimum levels. Consequently, the proposed optimum level in the ingredient formulation for manufacture of the standard sun-dried salt was 30% CPJ, as based on analyses. Ultimately, this study was expected to contribute to the commercialization of sun-dried salt of high quality.

Optimum condition of Acetic acid Fermentation for Persimmon Vinegar Preparation and Quality evaluation of Persimmon Vinegar (감식초 제조를 위한 초산발효 최적 조건 및 감식초의 품질특성)

  • This study was carried out for the purpose of improving the persimmon vinegar. The acetic acid bacteria strain JST-3, using acetic acid fermentation was isolated from the traditional persimmon vinegar. The optimum conditions for high yield of acetic acid were studied in the shaking bath. Acetic acid bacteria was cultured at 3$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 days and transferred to persimmon alcoholic juice for acetic acid fermentation. The optimum initial acidity for acetic acrid fermentation was 1%(w/v) and the addition of glucose or yeast extract was observed to produce relatively low yield of acetic acid. Succinic and acetic acid were major organic acid in the persimmon vinegar, The contents of lactic acid which was known to increase off-flavor were very low. Sensory evaluation revealed that the persimmon vinegar prepared in this study was superior to two commercial ones in the aroma and taste.

  • In this paper, the properties of high-strength concrete are described with respect to materials and mix conditions(water-cement ratio, chemical admixture, replacement of fly ash). As primary purposes of this study, the optimum mix design method of high-strength concrete to decrease unit cement contents is investigated, and the properties of fresh and hardened concretes are tested in terms of slump, air content and compressive strength. As results of this study, workability and strength development of the high-strength concrete depend on the water-cement ratio, replacement ratio of fly ash and dosage of the chemical admixture. The conditions which are proposed optimum mix design of the high-strength concrete show W/C 37%, S/A 42~45% and unit cement content 470~480kg/$\textrm{m}^3$. Based on the results, the applicability of high-strength concrete in site is clearly proved.

Multi-response Optimization for Unfertilized Corn Silk Extraction Against Phytochemical Contents and Bio-activities

  • This study was designed to optimize ethanol extraction process of unfertilized corn silk (UCS) to maximize phytochemical contents and bioactivities. The response surface methodology (RSM) with central composite design (CCD) was employed to obtain the optimal extraction conditions. The influence of ethanol concentration, extraction temperature and extraction time on total polyphenol contents, total flavonoid contents, maysin contents, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical scavenging activities and tyrosinase inhibition were analyzed. For all dependable variables, the most significant factor was ethanol concentration followed by extraction temperature and extraction time. The following optimum conditions were determined by simultaneous optimization of several responses with the Derringer's desirability function using the numerical optimization function of the Design-Expert program: ethanol concentration 80.45%, extraction temperature $53.49^{\circ}C$, and extraction time 4.95 h. Under these conditions, the predicted values of total polyphenol contents, total flavonoid contents, maysin contents, DPPH radical scavenging activity and tyrosinase inhibition were $2758.74{\mu}g\;GAE/g$ dried sample, $1520.81{\mu}g\;QUE/g$ dried sample, 810.26 mg/100g dried sample, 56.86% and 43.49%, respectively, and the overall desirability (D) was 0.74.

  • The method for calculation of $Y_2$BaCuO$_{5}$ contents was set up. It was estimated that the optimum value of 211 contents in the textured YBCO superconductor as flux pinning center was about 20wt.%. Ag contents have no influence on the critical temperature, but have large influence on the critical current density of the textured YBCO. When Ag contents over 15wt.%, which was the solubility of condensed YBCO, the critical current densities tend to a stable value.e.

  • Mycelia of Pleurotus ostreatus, Phellinus linteus, Ganoderma lucidum and Lentinus edodes were cultured in the selected cereals to generate functionally active cereals. The optimum water contents for the mycelial growth were 50%(wt/wt) for brown rice, barley and soybean and 75% for wheat and corn, respectively. P. ostreatus grew well in the most cereals while the mycelial growth of P. linteus, G. lucidum and L. edodes in soybean were siginificantly retarded. The contents of β-glucan and glucosamine in the mycelial cereals were determined. Wheat cultured with mushroom mycelia showed high ß-glucan content. Especially, wheat with G. lucidum contained the highest value of 26.16%. Soybean cultured with G. lucidum showed two-fold increase in glucosamine content with 9.63% of total mass while wheat showed 7.91%. Overall, wheat cultured with G. lucidum was the best functional cereal in terms of β-glucan and glucosamine contents.

  • Solubility on $(LiBr+CaCl_2)$ in water has been measured systematically and compared with those of pure LiBr. It has been observed that there exists optimum value of $CaCl_2(LiBr+CaCl_2)$ in solubility when total$(LiBr+CaCl_2)$ concentration is higher than 57wt%. As total concentration increases up to 65wt%, it is found that the optimum value also increases monotonically. From the experimental results, a master plot has been constructed, with which optimum ratio of LiBr to $CaCl_2$ can be found in terms of total concentration. Vapor pressure of $H_2O/(LiBr+CaCl_2)$ solution with optimum contents of $CaCl_2$ has been observed to be changed negligibly at relatiely low temperature. However, as temperature increases, it is found that increasement in vapor pressure is significant.

Botanical Composition, Herbage Production and Plant Mineral Contents as Affected by Application of Chemical Fertilizer and Fermented Sawdust Pig Manure on Cheju Brown Volcanic Ash Pasture Soil

  • This experiment was carried out during the period from September, 1997 to October, 1998 to determine the effect of fermented saw-dust pig manure (FSP) application on the herbage production on a mixed pasture in the Cheju brown volcanic ash soil. Split plot design (main plot: 3 nitrogen application levels of 0, 150 and 300 kgiha; sub plot: 4 pig sawdust manure levels of 0, 3, 6 and 12 tonha) was used. Plant height and dry matter yield increased significantly with an increase of nitrogen and FSP level. There was no difference in the botanical composition of grasses as affected by FSP application level, but herbage yields of grass species were increased by nitrogen application compared to that without nitrogen application. Botanical composition of white clover decreased with an increase of nitrogen application, but increased with an increase of FSP application level. Percentages of weeds were not affected by application rates of chemical nitrogen fertilizer and swine manure in the mixed species pasture. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents of species in the pasture significantly increased with increasing application rates of nitrogen fertilizer. In conclusion, it would be an optimum to apply 150 kgha of inorganic chemical fertilizer and plus either 3 or 6 toniha of fermented swine manure with sawdust for optimum production of mixed pasture on Cheju Island. Compaction Characteristics of Organic Mixture Soils with Surfactants (계면활성제를 사용한 유기물 혼합토의 다짐 특성)

  • Compaction tests have been performed to investigate the compaction characteristics of sands and clays with organic mixture. Weathered granite soil, kaolinite, and granulated carbon were used as the alternatives of sand, clay, and organics, respectively. The soapy water which is a kind of surfactant solutions was also used as water substitute to see the engineering properties changes of each soil. As seen when water was used, the optimum moisture contents increased and the maximum dry unit weight decreased for the soil with surfactants as the percentage of the organic contents increased. Surfactants slightly improved the compaction efficiency at low compactive energy level for the weathered granite soil with organics. As the organic contents increased for clays with surfactants, the optimum moisture contents decreased and the maximum dry unit weight increased. Surfactants slightly improved the compaction efficiency of clays with organics at all levels of compaction energy.
