  • A psychoacoustic model based noise shaping method is proposed, where noise's presence with a host signal will not be perceptually noticeable. The derivation of imperceptible noise levels from the masking thresholds of the signal involves a deconvolution associated with the spreading function in the psychoacoustic model, which results in an ill-conditioned problem. In this paper, the problem is formulated as a constrained optimization, and it is demonstrated that the solution provides noise shaping where the noise excitation level conforms to the masking thresholds of the signal.

  • In this paper a higher order iterative algorithm is developed for an unconstrained multivariate optimization problem. Taylor expansion of matrix valued function is used to prove the cubic order convergence of the proposed algorithm. The methodology is supported with numerical and graphical illustration.

  • This paper gives reviews on current research status in telecommunication network design. Two problems are identified as major research issues. One is the WDM network design problem, where traffic grooming, virtual topology design and routing and wavelength assignment problems are considered. The other is the OSPF weight setting problem which was proposed as a practical method to implement traffic engineering capability in IP networks. After presenting surveys on those problems, we discuss potential challenging research issues in telecommunication network design.

  • Tabu search (TS) has been successfully applied for solving many complex combinatorial optimization problems in the areas of operations research and production control. However, TS is for single-objective problems in its present form. In this article, a TS-based heuristic is developed to determine Pareto-efficient solutions to a multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem. The developed algorithm is then applied to the discrete optimal design problem in statistics to demonstrate its usefulness.

  • In this paper, we propose the power control problem for cognitive radio networks (CRNs) that maximizes the total utility of the secondary users (SUs). We use the interference temperature constraints to protect the primary users (PUs). The utility functions of SUs can be any increasing functions. We formulate the power control problem as monotonic optimization that can be solved in centralization to achieve the global optimum.

  • At an integrated steel mill, various raw material such as coal and iron ore are unloaded from a large ship. The unloaded raw material is then transported to storage yards through a complex belt conveyer network. We propose an optimization model for scheduling the unloading operations under the limitations of available berths, unloading equipments and transportation capacity of the belt conveyer network. We show that the problem is NP-Hard and propose a heuristic approach to the problem.

  • Disturbance observer(DOB) based controller design is one of the most popular methods in the field of motion control. In this paper, a generalized disturbance compensation framework, called as robust internal-loop compensator(RIC) is introduced and an advanced design method of DOB is proposed based on the RIC. Mixed sensitivity optimization problem, which is the main issue of DOB design, is solved through the parameterization of DOB in the RIC framework. Different from conventional methods, Q-filter is separated in the mixed sensitivity optimization problem and the systematic design law for the DOB is proposed. This guarantees the robustness and optimality of the DOB and also enables the design for unstable plants.

  • In practical control area, there are many examples with multiple objectives which may conflict or compete with each other like overhead crane control, automatic train operation, and refuse incinerator plant control, etc. These kinds of control problems are called multiobjective control problems, where it is difficult to provide the desired performance with control strategies based on single-objective optimization. Because the conventional control theories usually treat the control problem as the single objective optimization problem , the methods are not adequate to treat the multiobjective control problems. Particularly, in case of large scale systems or ill-defined systems, the multiple obj..

  • In this paper, we provide a treatment of the $H^{\infty}$-mixed sensitivity optimization approach to feedback system design. With compromising between the effect of a disturbance at the plant output and the effect of plant perturbations, we propose an algorithm to design robust controller. A $H^{\infty}$-optimization problem is to be equivalent to a Hankel-approximation, this enables the problem to be solved using state-space methods based on balanced realizations.s.

  • The optimal designs of groundwater problems of contaminant containment and cleanup using linear programming and genetic algorithm are provided. In the containment problem, genetic algorithm shows the superior feature to linear programming. In cleanup problem, genetic algorithm makes reasonable optimal design. Un this study, it is demonstrated through numerical experiments that genetic algorithm can be applied to remedial designs of groundwater problems.
