This paper presents a new approach with artificial immune system algorithm to solve the profit based unit commitment problem. The objective of this work is to find the optimal generation scheduling and to maximize the profit of generation companies (Gencos) when subjected to various constraints such as power balance, spinning reserve, minimum up/down time and ramp rate limits. The proposed hybrid method is developed through adaptive search which is inspired from artificial immune system and genetic algorithm to carry out profit maximization of generation companies. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been tested for different Gencos consists of 3, 10 and 36 generating units and the results are compared with the existing methods.
This paper proposes a method of solving a unit commitment problem using tabu search (TS) which is heuristic algorithm. Ts is a local search method that starts from any initial solution and attempts to determine a better solution using memory structures. In this paper, to reduce the computation time for finding the optimal solution, changing tabu list size as intensification strategy and path relinking method as diversification strategy are proposed. To show the usefulness of the proposed method, we simulated for 10 units system and 110 units system. Numerical results show improvements in the generation costs and the computation time compared with priority list, genetic algorithm(GA), and hybrid GA.
Islanded operation of a microgrid can ensure the reliable operation of the system when a large accident occurs in the main grid. However, because the generation capability of a microgrid is typically limited, a microgrid operator should take islanded operation risk into account in scheduling its generation resources. To address this problem, in this paper we have proposed two unit commitment formulations based on the islanding scenario that reflect the expected and worst-case values of the islanded operation risk. An optimal resource scheduling strategy is obtained for the microgrid operator by solving these optimization problem, and the effectiveness of the proposed method is investigated by numerical simulations.
In order to solve the AC optimal power flow (OPF) problem considering the generators' on/off status, it is necessary to model the problem as mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP). Because the computation time to find the optimal solution to the mixed-integer AC OPF problem increases significantly as the system becomes larger, most of the existing solutions simplify the problem either by deciding the on/off status of generators using a separate unit commitment algorithm or by ignoring the minimum output of the generators. Even though this kind of simplification may make the overall computation time tractable, the results can be significantly erroneous. This paper proposes a novel algorithm for the mixed-integer AC OPF problem, which can provide a near-optimal solution quickly and efficiently. The proposed method is based on a combination of the outer approximation method and the relaxed AC OPF theory. The method is applied to a real-scale power system that has 457 generators and 2132 buses, and the result is compared to the branch-and-bound (B&B) method and the genetic algorithm. The results of the proposed method are almost identical to those of the compared methods, but computation time is significantly shorter.
This paper is presented by the application of parallel adaptive evolutionary algorithm(PAEA) to search an optimal solution of a thermal unit commitment problem. The adaptive evolutionary algorithm(AEA) takes the merits of both a genetic algorithm(GA) and an evolution strategy(ES) in an adaptive manner to use the global search capability of GA and the local search capability of ES. To reduce the execution time of AEA, the developed algorithm is implemented on an parallel computer which is composed of 16 processors. To handle the constraints efficiently and to apply to Parallel adaptive evolutionary algorithm(PAEA), the states of thermal unit are represented by means of real-valued strings that display continuous terms of on/off state of generating units and are involved in their minimum up and down time constraints. And the violation of other constraints are handled by repairing operator. The procedure is applied to the $10{\sim}100$ thermal unit systems, and the results show capabilities of the PAEA.
This paper proposes a new optimal unit commitment algorithm for the rational operation of electric power systems. Especially, the algorithm is improved by considering transmission line capacity limits and load forecasting uncertainty with the consideration of the participation factors of each units, so that the method becomes more reliable and flexible one. The transmission losses are considered by using updated penalty factors obtained from the constant matrixes of the fast decoupled load flow method, the system loads are distributed at each buses, and the several necessary operational constraints are also considered for the purpose of presenting a more practicable scheme. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been demonstrated by applying to the 23-bus model system.
This paper describes the problem of the shortange-economic-scheduling for unit commitment and load dispatching in thermal power system. For economic operation of thermal system, the optimum time of startup and shoutdown of the generating unit must be determined so as to minimize the sum of generating and starting fuel cost over a given period. The above problems are analyzed for the purpose of the application of Dynamic Programing Method. Also the technique of Dynamic Programming is applied to the problems. For the illustative purpose, a case study was made on a model system composed of eight units and the computing time was about 190 seconds by IBM 360-40 system. Therefore, one can utilize this suggested method on any of the practical power systems.

Coordinating operation between large-scale wind power and thermal units in multiple time scale is an important problem to keep power balance, especially for the power grids mainly made up of large coal-fired units. The paper proposes a novel operation mode of multi-scale unit commitment (abbr. UC) that includes mid-term UC and day-ahead UC, which can take full advantage of insufficient flexibility and improve wind power accommodation. First, we introduce the concepts of multi-scale UC and then illustrate the benefits of introducing mid-term UC to the wind-coal intensive grid. The paper then formulates the mid-term UC model, proposes operation performance indices and validates the optimal operation mode by simulation cases. Compared with day-ahead UC only, the multi-scale UC mode could reduce the total generation cost and improve the wind power net benefit by decreasing the coal-fired units' on/off operation. The simulation results also show that the maximum total generation benefit should be pursued rather than the wind power utilization rate in wind-coal intensive system.
