Because of their cleanliness, low friction, and high stiffness, aerostatic bearings are used in numerous applications. Aerostic bearings that use porous materials as means of flow restriction have higher stiffness than other types of bearings and have been successfully applied as guide bearings, which have high motion accuracy requirements. However, the performances of porous bearings exhibit strong nonlinearity and can vary considerably depending on design parameters. Therefore, accurate prediction of the performance characteristics of porous bearings is necessary or their successful application. This study presents a porous bearing design and performance analysis for a spindle used in wafer polishing. The Reynolds and Darcy flow equations are solved to calculate the pressures in the lubrication film and porous busing, respectively. To verify the validity of the proposed analytical model, the calculated pressure distribution in the designed bearing is compared with that derived from previous research. Additional parametric studies are performed to determine the optimal design parameters. Analytical results show that optimal design parameters that obtain the maximum stiffness can be derived. In addition, the results show that cross-coupled stiffness increases with rotating speed. Thus, issues related to stability should be investigated at the design stage.

The role of disk clamp is to fasten disks to motor and to prevent the slip of disks during operation. This paper examined the effects of the design parameters of disk clamp - thickness, contact radius and cross-sectional shape -on the clamping force and circumferential stress distribution of disk. The large stress variation in circumferential direction results in large disk waveness and will increase repeatable run-out (RRO) finally. The disk clamp-disk-disk spacer system is modeled and the FE analysis is performed by ANSYS. The disk clamp with large contact radius shows more uniform stress distribution than the one with small contact radius and the stiffness variation around circumferential direct ion or the addition of the bending sect ion can make stress distribution uniform.

In this paper, the warm forging process sequence has been determined to manufacture the warm forged product for the precision bevel gear used as the differential gear unit of a commercial automobile. The preform shape of bevel gear influences the dimensional accuracy and stiffness of final product. The aspect ratio and chamfer length are considered as design parameters to achieve adequate metal distribution in the finish forging operation. Then the optimal conditions of design parameters have been selected by artificial neural network (ANN). Finally, to verify the optimal preform shape, the experiments of the warm forging of the bevel gear have been executed. The proposed method can give more systematic and economically feasible means for designing the preform shape in metal forming process.
This study aims to introduce a new bracing system by which even super-wide frames with large openings can be braced. The proposed system, hereafter called Cable-Pulley Brace (CPB), is a tension-only bracing system with a rectilinear configuration. In CPB, a wire rope passes through a rectilinear path around the opening(s) and connects the lower corner of the frame to its opposite upper one. CPB is a secondary load resisting system with a nonlinear-elastic hysteretic behavior due to its initial pre-tension load. As a result, the required energy dissipation would be provided by the MRF itself, and the main intention of using CPB is to contribute to the initial and post-yield stiffness of the whole system. Using a stiffness calibration technique, optimum placement of the CPBs is discussed to yield a uniform displacement demand along the height of the structure. A displacement-based design procedure is proposed by which the MRF with CPB can be designed to achieve a uniform distribution of inter-story drifts with predefined values. Obtained results indicated that CPB leads to significant reductions in maximum and residual deformations of the MRF at the expense of minor increase in the maximum base shear and developed axial force demands in the columns. In the case of a typical 5-story residential building, compared to SMRF system, CPB system reduces maximum amounts of inter-story and residual drifts by 35% and 70%, respectively. Moreover, openings of the frame are not interrupted by the CPB. This is the most appealing feature of the proposed bracing system from architectural point of view.
In this research a medical palpation guidance system for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is proposed. Palpation is a useful tool for identifying a size and location of a lump during a surgery. However, conventional manual palpation is only available in open surgery, so there has been several researches about palpation assistant or guidance system for MIS. The previously developed systems are based on a pressure based or stiffness based approach. These previous approaches have some limitations in increasing complexity of the systems and lack of geometric information about the lump which is more important information for the lump removal than the stiffness information. We propose a palpation guidance system using a novel approach using contact pressure distribution. Since our approach gives the geometry information of the lump as well as the existence information, the operator can easily notice the currently identified lump region and the optimal position for the next palpation. The experiment results show that our approach can offer the geometry information of the lump correctly.

When a submerged floating tunnel is connected to the ground, there is a risk of stress concentration at the shore connection owing to the displacement imbalance caused by low confinement pressures in water and high confinement pressures in the ground. Here, the effects of the boundary condition and stiffness of the joints installed at the shore connection on the behaviors of a submerged floating tunnel and its shore connection were analyzed using a numerical method. The analysis results obtained with fixed and ground boundaries were similar due to the high stiffness of the ground boundary. However, the stability of the shore connection was found to be improved with the ground boundary as a small displacement was allowed at the boundary. The effect of the joint stiffness was evaluated by investigating the dynamic behavior of the submerged floating tunnel, the magnitude of the load acting on the bored tunnel, and the stress distribution at the shore connection. A lower joint stiffness was found to correspond to more effective relief of the stress concentration at the shore connection. However, it was confirmed that joints with low stiffness also increase the submerged floating tunnel displacement and decrease the frequency of the dynamic behavior, causing a risk of increased resonance when wave loads with low frequency are applied. Therefore, it is necessary to derive the optimal joint stiffness that can achieve both stress concentration relief and resonance prevention during the design of shore connections to secure their dynamic stability.
Generally, the goal of seismic retrofit design of an existing structure using energy dissipation devices is to determine the optimum design parameters of a retrofit device to satisfy a specified limit state with minimum cost. However, the presence of multiple parameters to be optimized and the computational complexity of performing non-linear analysis make it difficult to find the optimal design parameters in the realistic 3D structure. In this study, genetic algorithm-based optimal seismic retrofit methods for determining the required number, yield strength, and location of steel slit dampers are proposed to retrofit an asymmetric soft first-story structure. These methods use a multi-objective and single-objective evolutionary algorithms, each of which varies in computational complexity and incorporates nonlinear time-history analysis to determine seismic performance. Pareto-optimal solutions of the multi-objective optimization are found using a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II). It is demonstrated that the developed multi-objective optimization methods can determine the optimum number, yield strength, and location of dampers that satisfy the given limit state of a three-dimensional asymmetric soft first-story structure. It is also shown that the single-objective distribution method based on minimizing plan-wise stiffness eccentricity turns out to produce similar number of dampers in optimum locations without time consuming nonlinear dynamic analysis.

The nonlinear vibration of the CRT shadow mask is analyzed in consideration of the V-shaped tension distribution and the effect of wire impact damping. The reduced order FEM model of the shadow mask is obtained from dynamic condensation for the mass and stiffness matrices. Damping wire is modeled using the lumped parameter method to effectively describe its contact interactions with the shadow mask. The nonlinear contact-impact model is composed of spring and damper elements, of which parameters are determined from the Hertzian contact theory and the restitution coefficient, respectively. The analysis model of the shadow mask with damping wires is experimentally verified through impact tests of shadow masks performed in a vacuum chamber. Using the validated analysis model of the shadow mask with damping wires, the‘design of experiments’technique is applied to search fur the optimal damping wire configuration so that the vibration attenuation of the shadow mask is maximized.

Bending motion has been used in the surgical instruments with bending structures and tendon mechanisms. A simplified bending angle amplification ratio between the proximal and distal bending joint was derived in this article. The bending structure of disk and rib in the proximal joint was analyzed based on finite element method with an emphasis on the circumferential uniformity of bending stiffness. Regarding the distal joint, optimal design and sensitivity analysis was done with four design variables of outer and inner diameter, rib height and rib width while maximizing the deformation under the stress distribution below the yield stress. Outer diameter and rib width are most critical to maximum deformation as the outer diameter and inner diameters are so to maximum equivalent stress.

Generally, heavy electronic products undergo many different types of shocks in transportation from a manufacturer to customers. Cushioning package is used to protect electronic products from severe shock environments. Since the mass distribution of heavy electronic products is usually unbalanced and complex. it is very difficult to design a cushioning package with having high performance by considering only the equivalent stiffness of that. Therefore, when designing the cushioning package for a heavy electronic product, it is necessary to optimize its shape in order to maximize the cushioning performance. In this study, it is focused on designing an optimal shape of cushioning package for a large refrigerator and an efficient design method is suggested by using a dynamic finite element analysis. As the results of this study the optimal shape of cushioning package, which has high cushioning performance and minimized volume, was obtained through the mechanical drop analysis and a optimization process. Through free drop tests of refrigerators, it was identified that the cushioning performance of the cushioning package was improved up by 25% and the its own volume was reduced by 22 %.
