  • A new High level hardware Description Language, ASPHODEL(Algorithm Synthesis Pascal Hardware for Optimal Design and Efficient Language), and its algorithm compiler for high level synthesis are described in this paper. The new HDL, appropriated to the description of algorithmic level and lower, models VLSI circuits as an abstracted block which is consisted of input/output ports and hierachical processors to control VLSI complexities with efficiency. Also, in order to improve the descriptive power, popular Pascal programming language is modified to build ASPHODEL syntax rules. ASPHODEL algorithm compiler generates an intermediate form through lexical and syntax analysis from ASPHODEL source codes. To show the validation of presented language and its compiler, those are applied to practical design examples.

  • Bar-code (tag) microarrays of yeast gene-deletion collections facilitate the systematic identification of genes required for growth in any condition of interest. Anti-sense strands of amplified bar-codes hybridize with ~10,000 (5,000 each for up-and down-tags) different kinds of sense-strand probes on an array. In this study, we optimized the hybridization processes of an array for fission yeast. Compared to the first version of the array (11 ㎛, 100K) consisting of three sectors with probe pairs (perfect match and mismatch), the second version (11 ㎛, 48K) could represent ~10,000 up-/ down-tags in quadruplicate along with 1,508 negative controls in quadruplicate and a single set of 1,000 unique negative controls at random dispersed positions without mismatch pairs. For PCR, the optimal annealing temperature (maximizing yield and minimizing extra bands) was 58℃ for both tags. Intriguingly, up-tags required 3× higher amounts of blocking oligonucleotides than down-tags. A 1:1 mix ratio between up- and down-tags was satisfactory. A lower temperature (25℃) was optimal for cultivation instead of a normal temperature (30℃) because of extra temperature-sensitive mutants in a subset of the deletion library. Activation of frozen pooled cells for >1 day showed better resolution of intensity than no activation. A tag intensity analysis showed that tag(s) of 4,316 of the 4,526 strains tested were represented at least once; 3,706 strains were represented by both tags, 4,072 strains by up-tags only, and 3,950 strains by down-tags only. The results indicate that this microarray will be a powerful analytical platform for elucidating currently unknown gene functions.

  • To investigate the optimal detector material for prompt gamma imaging during boron neutron capture therapy, in this study, we evaluated the characteristic regarding radiation reaction of available detector materials using a Monte Carlo simulation. Sixteen detector materials used for radiation detection were investigated to assess their advantages and drawbacks. The estimations used previous experimental data to build the simulation codes. The energy resolution and detection efficiency of each material was investigated, and prompt gamma images during BNCT simulation were acquired using only the detectors that showed good performance in our preliminary data. From the simulation, we could evaluate the majority of detector materials in BNCT and also could acquire a prompt gamma image using the six high ranked-detector materials and lutetium yttrium oxyorthosilicate. We provide a strategy to select an optimal detector material for the prompt gamma imaging during BNCT with three conclusions.

  • Finite field multiplication and division are important arithmetic operation in error-correcting codes and cryptosystems. The elements of the finite field GF($2^m$) are represented by bases with a primitive polynomial of degree m over GF(2). We can be easily realized for multiplication or computing multiplicative inverse in GF($2^m$) based on a normal basis representation. The number of product terms of logic function determines a complexity of the Messay-Omura multiplier. A normal basis exists for every finite field. It is not easy to find the optimal normal element for a given primitive polynomial. In this paper, the generating method of normal basis is investigated. The normal bases whose product terms are less than other bases for multiplication in GF($2^m$) are found. For each primitive polynomial, a list of normal elements and number of product terms are presented.

  • Gas cylinder cabinets have risks such as cylinder explosion and scattering of debris when a fire occurs. These risks are likely to cause gas spills and cause secondary damage. In order to reduce damage, it is very important to secure the fire resistance performance of the gas cylinder cabinet. In foreign countries, NFPA codes in the United States and EN-14470-2 in Europe stipulate fire resistance test standards for gas cylinder cabinets to protect internal cylinders for a certain period of time in a situation where gas cylinder cabinets are exposed to flames. However, in Korea, only internal pressure performance and airtight performance standards are specified, and the target is limited to piping, and research and regulations for the fire resistance performance of gas cylinder cabinets are insufficient compared to overseas. Therefore, in this study, finite element analysis was used to establish fire resistance standards for domestic gas cylinder cabinets. In the event of a fire, optimal conditions are derived in terms of structure and material.

  • This study presents an optimal seismic design method based on genetic algorithms to induce beam-hinge collapse mechanisms in reinforced concrete moment frames. Two objective functions are used. The first minimizes the cost of the structure and the second maximizes the energy dissipation capacity of the structure. Constraints include strength conditions of columns and beams, minimum conditions for column-to-beam flexural strength ratio, and conditions for preventing plastic hinge occurrence of columns. Linear static analysis is performed to evaluate the strength of members, whereas nonlinear static analysis is carried out to evaluate energy dissipation capacity and occurrence of plastic hinges. The proposed method was applied to a four-story example structure, and it was confirmed that solutions for inducing a beam-hinge collapse mechanism are obtained. The value of the column-beam flexural strength ratio of the obtained design was found to be larger than the value suggested by existing seismic codes. A more robust strategy is needed to induce a beam-hinge collapse mode.

  • Most conventional processors execute program instructions in a sequential manner. On the other hand, VLIW processor can execute multiple instructions at the same time. It exploits instruction level parallelism to improve system performance. To that end, program code should be rearranged to VLIW instruction format by a compiler. The compiler determine an optimal execution order of instructions of a program code. This instruction ordering is also called instruction scheduling. The scheduling is an algorithm that decides the execution order for instruction codes in loop parts of a program so that the instruction level parallelism can be maximized. In this research, we apply an existing scheduling algorithm to a VLIW FCC and describe analysis results to further improve its performance. And, we present a solution to solve some limitation of the existing scheduling technique. By using our solution, FCC's performance can be improved upto 32% compared to the existing scheduling only setting.

  • In the QR Decomposition-based (QRD) decoding class, the system performance is sensitive to the error propagation. Thus, it is critical to correctly decode the previous layers. One apprach to desensitize the error propagation is to propose the optimal decoding order of layers. In this wort we propose a new extended-list Soled QRD-based (SQRD) decoding approach. In the proposed decoding scheme, the solution of the few first layers is extended as the list of promising possible solutions. By doing so, the diversity of the lowest layer is increased. As a result, the system performance is less sensitive to the error propagation than its counterparts. The proposed approach is verified by the computer simulation results.

  • As 4G mobile communication systems require high transmission rates with reliability, the need for efficient error correcting code is increasing. In this paper, a novel LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) decoder is introduced. The LDPC code is one of the most popular error correcting codes. In order to improve performance of the LDPC decoder, we use SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) estimation results to adjust coefficients of modified UMP-BP (Uniformly Most Probable Belief Propagation) algorithm which is one of widely-used LDPC decoding algorithms. An advantage of Modified UMP-BP is that it is amenable to implement in hardware. We generate the optimal values by simulation for various SNRs and coefficients, and the values are stored in a look-up table. The proposed decoder decides coefficients of the modified UMP-BP based on SNR information. The simulation results show that the BER (Bit Error Rate) performance of the proposed LDPC decoder is better than an LDPC decoder using a conventional modified UMP-BP.
