  • We have developed a high performance vertical alignment TFT-LCD, that shows a high light transmittance, and wide viewing angle characteristics with an unusually high contrast ratio. In order to optimize the electro-optical properties we have studied the effect of cell parameters, multi-domain structure and retardation film compensation. With the optimized cell parameters and process conditions, we have achieved a 24" wide UXGA TFT-LCD monitor (16:10 aspect ratio 1920X1200) showing a contrast ratio over 500:1, panel transmittance near 4.5%, response time near 27 ms, and viewing angle higher than 80 degree in all directions.

  • Extensive studies have been conducted for reducing the residual stresses and birefringence in injection-molded optical disk substrate. Flow-induced and thermally-induced stresses and birefringence have been found as two main sources during injection molding process. However, high speed rotation also induces extra stresses and birefringence in real operation of disk drives. In the present paper rotation-induced in-plane birefringence has been measured and presented for CD and DVD substrates at different radial position. About 10 - 15 nm of extra retardation has been measured up to 4,800 rpm.

  • The pi-cell [1] is known as one of the candidates for a fast response time and a good viewing angle characteristics due to a self-compensated configuration and can be a replaceable mode instead of the current TN mode and the IPS mode for moving picture in future. This paper shows the optimized condition to maintain bend state instead of splay state, which is mortal demerit for good optical properties in a pi-cell, by using the polymer stabilized method [2]. The good electro-optical characteristics are also obtained by optimizing the various factors, which are monomer concentration in a LC, UV intensity, curing time, curing voltage, and curing temperature, and by using retardation film. We use a scanning electron microscope to study the structures of the polymer stabilized polymer network in a pi-cell as a key to figure out why bend state is occurred.

Finally, experimental results were compared with the extra stresses calculated from simple formulation.

  • A simple technique to measure electro-optic coefficients has been developed. It is based on rotating analyzer polarimetry. With a coaxial configuration of the optically active polarizing devices, the synchronously digitized signals are Fourier analyzed to quantitatively determine the elliptical polarization of light and, hence, the electric field induced birefringence. This technique has the advantage that it does not require waveguiding, and since it is improved from the crossed polarizer method it measures the phase retardation directly. It has been applied for the precise determination of electro-optic coefficients of uniaxial LiNbO3 single crystals. The excellent agreeement with reported values confirms its usefulness toward accurate characterization of electro-optic coefficients of unknown specimens.

  • 1)iscussed in this paper are the effects of phase modulation on the line spread functions (LSF) and MTFs of ;I binocular objective system. The binocular objective lens is made in Korea. It has rotationally symmetric aberrations. The LSFs and MTFs are measured experimentally. The phase modulation is carried out by applying phase retardation n on the aperture. The area where the phase is not retarded presents a double annular type. The OTF curves of phase modulated aperture are compared with that of unmodulated aperture. The comparison shows that there is the aberration compensation effect in aberration loaded system. Therefore the performance of many optical system can be improved without any loss of light energy by properly modulating the phase on the aperture.

  • We propose a polarization phase-shifting technique to investigate the thickness of $Ta_2O_5$ thin films deposited on BK7 substrates, using a modified Sagnac interferometer. Incident light is split by a polarizing beam splitter into two orthogonal linearly polarized beams traveling in opposite directions, and a quarter-wave plate is inserted into the common path to create an unbalanced phase condition. The linearly polarized light beams are transformed into two circularly polarized beams by transmission through a quarter-wave plate placed at the output of the interferometer. The proposed setup, therefore, yields rotating polarized light that can be used to extract a relative phase via the self-reference system. A thin-film sample inserted into the cyclic path modifies the output signal, in terms of the phase retardation. This technique utilizes three phase-shifted intensities to evaluate the phase retardation via simple signal processing, without manual adjustment of the output polarizer, which subsequently allows the thin film's thickness to be determined. Experimental results show that the thicknesses obtained from the proposed setup are in good agreement with those acquired by a field-emission scanning electron microscope and a spectroscopic ellipsometer. Thus, the proposed interferometric arrangement can be utilized reliably for non-contact thickness measurements of transparent thin films and characterization of optical devices.

  • The trajectory of the transmission ellipsometric pseudoconstant ${\rho}=tan{\psi}_{\mu}e^{i{\Delta}_{\mu}}$ of a uniaxially anisotropic substrate like PET forms a circle in polar coordinates, as the phase-retardation angle is varied at a fixed azimuthal angle. The radius as well as the center's position of this circle are functions of the azimuthal angle only. This circle passes through the point (1,0), and the center of this circle is located on the real axis. These characteristics of the circle are examined analytically, and are utilized to derive simple expressions for the azimuthal angle and the phase-retardation angle of the uniaxially anisotropic substrate using the measured transmission ellipsometric constant. Finally, we confirm that the derived expressions are well applied to the analysis of the optical anisotropy of a PET film.

  • Electro-optic characteristics of reflective hybrid aligned liquid crystal (LC) cell driven by fringe field using a nematic LC with positive dielectric anisotropy have been studied. Optimized optical configurations are achieved by using a single polarizer, half-wave film and a cell with quarter-wave retardation. The simulation results shows an optimum cell retardation of $0.30{\mu}m$. This value may allow a practical cell gap larger than $3{\mu}m$, which makes it easy to control in the manufacturing process. Furthermore, this LC cell with optimized cell parameters shows low wavelength dispersion and the contrast ratio greater than 5 over exists about $100{\circ}$ in vertical direction and $160{\circ}$ in horizontal direction. Also, when using the LC with positive dielectric anisotropy rather than negative dielectric anisotropy, the display shows low power consumption and fast response time.

  • A new hybrid, heterodyne, fiber-optic electric field sensor scheme is presented. In this scheme, a dual polarization, dual frequency, stabilized He-Ne laser is used for the light source of the interferometer, Probe beam is delivered to the sensor head using polarization maintaining fiber. In the sensor head, $LiTaO_3$ electro-optic crystal is used for sensing element. Phase retardation is induced on the dual frquency, dual polarization probe beam due to applied electric field across the crystal. Induced phase retardation is demodulated by in-phase and quadrature demodulation technique. In this way, we can obtain optimum sensitivity for electric field measurement regardless a quasi-static phase difference between two polarization components.
