  • In this paper, a low-cost optical temperature sensor is implemented, using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) as the temperature probe and a low-cost VCSEL with temperature-dependent output wavelength as the light source. To analyze the wavelength of the reflected light from the FBG, an interrogation was applied using a method of referring to the internal temperature according to the output wavelength of the VCSEL. When the temperature of the VCSEL was adjusted from 14 to $52.2^{\circ}C$, the output wavelength varied from 1519.90 to 1524.25 nm. The degree of wavelength tuning according to temperature was $0.114nm/^{\circ}C$. The variable wavelength repeatability error according to temperature was ${\pm}0.003nm$, and the temperature measurement error was ${\pm}0.18^{\circ}C$. As a result of measuring the temperatures from 22.3 to $194.2^{\circ}C$, the value of the internal temperature change of the light source according to the applied temperature ${\Delta}T$ was $0.146^{\circ}C/{\Delta}T$, the change in reflected wavelength of the temperature probe according to applied temperature ${\Delta}T$ was measured at $16.64pm/^{\circ}C$. and the temperature measurement error of the sensor was ${\pm}1^{\circ}C$.

  • In aircraft composite structures, structural defects such as matrix cracks, delaminations and fiber breakages are hard to detect if they are breaking out in operating condition. Therefore, to assure the structural integrity, it is desirable to perform the real-time health monitoring of the structures. In this study, a fiber optic sensor was applied to the composite beams to monitor failure and strain in real-time. To detect the failure signal and strain simultaneously, laser diode and ASE broadband source were applied in a single EFPI sensor using wavelength division multiplexer. Short time courier transform and wavelet transform were used to characterize the failure signal and to determine the moment of failure. And the strain measured by AEFPI was compared with the that of strain gage. From the result of the tensile test, strain measured by the AEFPI agreed with the value of electric strain gage and the failure detection system could detect the moment of failure with high sensitivity to recognize the onset of micro-crack failure signal.

  • This study uses Diglycidyl ether of terephthalylidene-bis-(4-amino-3-methylphenol) (DGETAM), an amine hardener 4,4'-diaminodiphenylethane (DDE) and cationic catalyst N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) to make epoxy film. For analysis, 1H_NMR and FT-IR were used to verify proper synthesis, and the liquid crystallinity of DGETAM was checked using Differntial Scanning Calorimetry and Polarized Optical Microscopy. Thermal conductivity of the sample was measured using Laser Flash Apparatus. Thermal stability as well as thermal conductivity is important when used as a packaging material. Activated energy is the energy needed to generate a response, which can be used to estimate the energy required to maintain physical properties. It was obtained using the Arrhenius equation based on the data measured by isothermal decomposition using Thermogravimetric Analysis. Measurement of the thermal conductivity of epoxy films showed higher thermal conductivity when DDE was used, and it was found that thermal conductivity had an effect on thermal stability, given that it represented an activation energy similar to a film with BPH upon 5% decomposition.

  • In addition to its typical use for skin rejuvenation, fractional laser irradiation of early cancerous lesions may reduce the risk of tumor development as a byproduct of wound healing in the stroma after the controlled injury. While fractional ablative lasers are commonly used for cosmetic/aesthetic purposes (e.g., photorejuvenation, hair removal, and scar reduction), we propose a novel use of such laser treatments as a stromal treatment to delay tumorigenesis and suppress carcinogenesis. In this study, we found that non-ablative fractional laser (NAFL) irradiation may have a possible suppressive effect on early tumor growth in syngeneic mouse tumor models. We included two syngeneic mouse tumor models in irradiation groups and control groups. In the irradiation group, a thulium fiber based NAFL at 1927 nm was used to irradiate the skin area including the tumor injection region with 70 mJ/spot, while no laser irradiation was applied to the control group. Numerical simulation with the same experimental condition showed that thermal damage was confined only to the irradiation spots, sparing the adjacent tissue area. The irradiation groups of both tumor models showed smaller tumor volumes than the control group at an early tumor growth stage. We also detected elevated inflammatory cytokine levels a day after the NAFL irradiation. NAFL treatment of the stromal tissue could potentially be an alternative anticancer therapeutic modality for early tumorigenesis in a minimally invasive manner.

  • Since transmissions of large amounts of data are frequent, users require more bandwidth, and the need for communications networks having greater bandwidth is increasing. One communications network satisfying this need is an optical communications network. Therefore, studies to increase the transmission capacity of optical communications systems have been carried out. However, in a general optical communications system, a signal transmitted through optical fiber (a transmission medium) is detected through direct detection in the receiving system. This method has a disadvantage in that the entire bandwidth of the optical signal cannot be utilized. Also, when transmitting an optical signal, there is a problem where the signal-to-noise ratio is affected by neighboring channels. To overcome this situation, various studies are being conducted to minimize the influence of external interference and noise. This paper overcomes the situation by transmitting spectrum-sliced signals using the digital transmission system, FSK. Analyzing the characteristics of the signals detected in the receiver of the optical communications system, Gaussian distribution is used for the PDF of the spectrum-sliced signal, and the signal at the receiving end of the optical communications system is assumed to have a k-square distribution. The results of the analysis confirmed it is better to transmit the spectrally divided signal rather than transmit the laser source.

  • Two kinds of temperature monitoring technology have been introduced in this study, which can measure coincidently temperatures at many points along a single length of cable. One is to use a thermal sensor cable comprizing of addressable thermal sensors. The other is to use an optic fiber sensor with Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) system. The differences between two technologies can be summarized as follows: A thermal sensor cable has a concept of "point sensing" that can measure temperature only at a predefined position. The accuracy and resolution of temperature measurement are up to the capability of the individual thermal sensor. On the other hand, an optic fiber sensor has a concept of "distributed sensing" because temperature is measured practically at all points along the fiber optic cable by analysing the intensity of Raman back-scattering when a laser pulse travels along the fiber. Thus, the temperature resolution depends on the measuring distance, measuring time and spatial resolution. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of two different temperature monitoring techniques in technical and economical sense. To this end, diverse experiments with two techniques were performed and two techniques are applied under the same condition. Considering the results, the thermal sensor cable will be well applicable to the assessment of groundwater flow, geothermal distribution and grouting efficiency within about loom distance, and the optic fiber sensor will be suitable for long distance such as pipe line inspection, tunnel fire detection and power line monitoring etc.

  • In this study, we were developed an accuracy of the proposed two dimensional statical inclinometer what used a position sensitive detector(PSD) by an error analysis. The inclinometer consists of a laser source, a mass, an optic-fiber, and a PSD. The gravity direction on a base platform of the inclinometer is changed by an unknown inclination angle. And a laser spot is moved from the origin to another position of a PSD following a variation of an optical path by the gravity. These processes enable the inclinometer to estimate the inclination angle from distance information of the moving spot. A design methodology on the basis of a sensitivity analysis was applied to improve the measurement performance such as a full measuring range and a resolution. But it still has error factors, so we analyze the uncertainty of the inclinometer to evaluate the systematic errors from alignments, assembly error and so on. The experimental performance evaluation about the design objectives as a measuring range and a resolution was performed. And the validity and the feasibility of the design process were certified by an experimental process. Systematic errors eliminated to improve the accuracy of the inclinometer by the corrected measuring model from the calibration process between the inclination angle and the PSD position instead of the nominal measuring model. The ANOVA(analysis of variance) confirmed the effect of eliminating the systematic errors in the inclinometer. From these methodologies, the proposed inclinometer was able to measure with a high resolution(35.14sec) and a wide range(from $-15^{\circ}\;to\;15^{\circ}$

  • Photploymer films are widely used in printing and electronic industries, and their usage is expanding to encompass holography, data storage and data processing, optical waveguides and compact disks, etc. One of widely used photoplymerization initiator, 20chloro-hexaarylbiimidazole (o-Cl-HABI), is studied by laser flash photolysis in dichloromethane solution in the absence and presence of the visible light photosensitizing dye, 2, 5-bis[(2, 3, 6, 7 -tetrahydro- 1H, 5H -benzo [i, j,] quinolizin -1-yl) methylene]-cyclopenta-none, (JAW). In the presence of JAW, an increase in triarylimidazolyl radicals L.formation is observed in relative to the absence of JAW. The mechanism of this photosensitizing dissociation is concluded as the dissociation of the o-Cl-HABI radical anion formed by the electron transfer from excited singlet state of JAW to o-Cl-HABI. The observed formation of L.radicals exhibits a linear dependence on o-Cl-HABI concentration. The rate constant of electron transfer obtained from this dependence is equal to (1.0$\pm$0.2) x $10^9 M^{-1}s^{-1}$. No reaction between the excited triplet state of JAW and o-Cl-HABI is found.

  • There are to be some cracks on the material degradation part or the stress concentration parts of the main members, which carry on over-loads, of structures. Because these cracks can be used to evaluate the structural health status, it is important to monitor the crack growth for maintaining the structural safety. In this study, the fiber Bragg grating sensor with a drop ball was developed as a sensor for crack growth detection of an existing crack. The crack growth detection sensor was constructed with three parts: a probe part, a wavelength controling light source and receiver part, and an impact part. The probe part was just formed with a fiber Bragg grating optical fiber The wavelength controling light source part was composed of a current supplying circuit, a DFB laser diode, and a TEC controling circuit for wavelength control. Also, the impact part was just implemented by dropping a steel ball. The performance of this sensor was confirmed by the experiments of the crack detection with an aluminum plate having one existing crack. According to these experiments, the difference of the sensor signal outputs was correlated with the crack length. So, it was confirmed that this sensor could be applied to monitor the crack growth.

  • We have experimentally demonstrated the transmission performance of a feedforward optical transmitter using an external light injection technique. The feedforward compensation method shows 31 dB intermodulation distortion suppression and 2.2 dB noise reduction. A high side-mode suppression ratio exceeding 35 dB of the wavelength of the locked Fabry-Perot laser diode was obtained over 12 nm ranges. The suppression characteristics of the intermodulation distortion for various wavelength differences and transmission lengths were measured and analyzed as the evaluation criteria for the system performance in WDM/SCM based radio-over-fiber systems.
