This paper presents the performance analysis of 10[Gb/s] optical duobinary transmitters with the non-ideal Mach-Zehnder modulator which does not have exactly 50/50 splitting/combining ratios by computer simulations. For driving voltage ratios(=driving voltage/switching voltage) with smaller than 100[%], the transmission performance has been greatly affected by extension of LPF bandwidths. Nevertheless, the performance has been degraded when the driving voltage ratio is 100[%]. The smaller driving voltage ratios has, the more sensitivity improves by extension of LPF bandwidths under the asymmetry condition. But the driving voltage ratio with 80[%] has better bit error rate(BER) than those with 50[%] and 25[%].

We propose a novel driver circuit design using $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process technology that drives a 1550 nm high-speed VCSEL used in optical transceiver. We report a distinct improvement in bandwidth, voltage gain and eye diagram at 3.1Gb/s data rate in comparison with existing topology. In this paper, the design and layout of a 3.1Gb/s VCSEL driver for optical transceiver having arrayed multi-channel of integrating module is confirmed.

We have theoretically investigated the asymmetry effects on 10[Gb/s] optical duobinary transmitters from the viewpoint of the driving voltage ratios by computer simulations. For driving voltage ratios(=driving voltage/switching voltage) with smaller than 100[%], the transmission performance has been greatly affected by the asymmetry of the bandwidth of LPFs than that of the Mach-Zehnder Modulator driving voltage. On the other hand, for driving voltage ratios with 100[%], the transmission performance has been degraded by the asymmetry of the driving voltage and is not sensitive to that of the bandwidth of LPFs. For the transmission performance within 1[dB] power penalty under the asymmetry condition, the driving voltage ratio with 100[%] has performed better than the low driving voltage ratios.
This study investigated elementary school teachers' understanding of the image formation by converging lens, pinholes camera, mirror and water. In each case teachers were asked to draw the ray diagram to indicate the position of the image. Teachers' ray diagrams were analyzed in accordance with the scientific process of image formation. Results of analysis showed that teacher's conceptions were classified into five levels for each situation. And most of the teachers were in level 3 and level 4 in each case. Because they had difficulties in the appling scientific conception(propagating path of light, diffused reflection from each object point, role of the eye, ray tracing) to finding location of image. Also most of teachers didn't know how to apply the law of reflection and refraction to each situation. The study finally discussed the teacher training program of the optical image.

In this paper, we proposed a novel encoder/decoder for an optical CDMA(code division multiple access) system by using an array of SSFBGs(superstructured fiber Bragg gratings). The feasibility of the system is shown by the simulations. The Q-factor for the system was 14.53 dB when the well-known Gold codes are used.
We propose an effective algorithm, which can predict the detailed behavior of the intensity-modulated high speed optical signal after propagating through an optical fiber. The alogrithm is based on the SSF (Split Step Fourier) Method, however, the step size is automatically calibrated in each calculation step to reduce the number of calculations within given round-off error bound. Applying the algorithm to the 2.5 Gbps 100 km transmission and 10 Gbps 40 km transmission simulations, we achieved the calculation time reduction by maximum 1/120 and 1/56 of the calculation time by using the SSF fixed step algorithm previously known. The root-mean-square of the round-off error was kept within -30 dB compared to the signal level throughout the calculation.
The AWG-filtering effect was investigated on a bidirectional 100-GHz-channel-spacing WDM-PON link using spectrum-sliced and RSOA-amplified light sources for downstream signals and a wavelength reuse technique for upstream signals. Signal performances of three different filtering AWGs, including Gaussian, trapezoidal, and rectangular types, were compared on link transmission with fiber nonlinear effects. As an extinction ratio of a downstream signal varied, the effect for both directional signals was analyzed and optimized. It was found that there was an optimal pass bandwidth of an AWG for the balance between relative intensity noise decrement and cross phase modulation noise increment as the bandwidth got wider.

Among various wavelength conversion technologies, that using the cross-gain modulation in laser diode makes it possible to deal with the high speed signal quite simply and efficiently. In this paper, presented was the applicability of an improved time-domain large-signal dynamic model as a CAD tool to analyzed the characteristics of SSGDBR(Superstructure Grating Distributed Bragg Reflector) laser diodes used for wavelength converters. Using this model, it was shown that this kind of wavelength converter can provide the widely tunable wavelength conversion of the high speed data above 10 Gbps. We also investigated the effect of input optical power and the bias current on the characteristics of the device such as extinction ration and eye diagram. The modeling results show very similar trend to the experimental reports.

For blind equalization, we propose a method of updating an equalizer, which generates an error from selectively applying a transmitted symbol constellation and that of induced equivalently from the transmitted symbol constellation and updates the equalizer by using this error. The proposed method, by selectively using the symbol constellation effective for improvement of symbol estimation accuracy and that of effective for improvement of error performance, showed that it is possible to improve the error performance at the same time to open the eye diagram of equalizer output quickly. As a criterion applying the symbol constellation, we used the dispersion of symbol points of equalizer output. In addition, to increase the accuracy of updating an equalizer the error was controlled by using current and previous dispersions. By simulation, under multipath channel with additive noise, we verified the equalization performance of the proposed method for 64-QAM.
A modeling methodology for the analysis of injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes (FP-LDs), promising for cost-effective WDM-PON sources, is proposed. The time-domain large-signal model that is used is found to provide quite similar results to some experimental ones. With our methodology, we model characteristics of FP-LDs, such as influence of reflectivity at a facet and detuning on injection-locking. The eye diagram characteristics are also investigated. It is observed that the facet reflectivity at the injection side should be lower than 1% to provide stable operation in terms of good side-mode suppression ratio and independence from detuning between narrow-band injection noise and LD modes. It is also observed that good eye opening can be obtained for 155 Mbps modulation while the parameters such as the active region thickness should be properly optimized to obtain reasonable eye opening at 1.25 Gbps.
