COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) is a geostationary satellite and has been developing by KARI for communication, ocean and meteorological observations. It will be launched by ARIANE 5. Ka-band components are installed on South panel, where single solar array wing is mounted. Radiators, embedded heat pipes, external heat pipe, insulation blankets and heaters are utilized for the thermal control of the satellite. The Ka-band payload section is divided several areas based on unit operating temperature in order to optimize radiator area and maximize heat rejection capability. Other equipment for sensors and bus are installed on North panel. The ocean and meteorological sensors are installed on optical benches on the top floor to decouple thermally from the satellite. During the transfer orbit operation, satellite will be under severe thermal environments due to low dissipation of components, satellite attitudes and LAE(Liquid Apogee Engine) firing. This paper presents temperature and heater power prediction and validation of thermal control design during transfer orbit operation.

Evaluation of the effect of radial distortion for a holographic stereogram demands conducting an experiment which comprises rendering of a 3D obejc, acquisition of perspective images, rearrangement of the acquired images for hogel images and quality assessment of the observing image reconstructed from the holographic stereogram. We propose numerical implementation of this evaluation by a specially developed algorithm for modeling of all required steps. The modeling is done by using a numerical model of an optical engine for generation of radially distorted hogel images at various degrees of distortion. The distorted images are used to form the holographic stereogram and to make the numerically reconstructed images from the holographic stereogram which are observed by an observer at desired location. The reconstructed images are compared by using PSNR.
Strip casted and rolled magnesium sheet is become exiting material for car manufacturer, due to its better formability and specific strength compare with conventional extruded sheet. TWB technology was attractive for car body designer, because it saves the weight of the car without strength loss. In this study, the laser welding performance of magnesium sheet was investigated for Mg TWB panel manufacturing. The material was strip casted and rolled magnesium alloy sheet contains 3 wt% Al and 1 wt% Zn (AZ31). Lamp pumped Nd:YAG laser of 2kW was used and its laser light was delivered by optical fiber of 0.6mm core diameter to material surface with focusing optics of 200mm focal length for TWB welding. The microstructure of weld bead was investigated to check internal defects such as inclusion, porosity and cracks. Also mechanical properties and formability were evaluated for press forming of car body. For the results, there was no crack but inclusion or porosity on weld at some conditions. The tensile strength of weld was over 95% of base metal. Inner and outer panel of engine hood were press formed and assembled at elevated temperature.
This paper presents a method for measuring the shaft power of a marine main engine. Usually, in traditional systems for measuring shaft power, a strain gauge is used even though it has several disadvantages. First, it is difficult to set up the strain gauge on the shaft and acquire the correct signal for analysis. Second, it is very expensive and complicated. For these reasons, we investigated alternative approaches for measuring shaft power and proposed a new method that uses a vision-based measurement system. For this study, templates for image processing and CCD cameras were installed at the both ends of the shaft. Then, in order for the cameras to capture the images synchronously, we used a trigger mark and a optical sensor. The position of each template between the first and the second camera images were compared to calculate the torsion angle. The proposed measurement system can be installed more easily than traditional measurement systems and is suitable for any shaft because it does not contact the shaft. With this approach, it is possible to measure the shaft power while a ship is operating.

We have been developed an intelligent mobile robot with an artificial olfactory function to recognize odours and to track odour source location. This mobile robot also has ben installed an engine for speech recognition and synthesis and is controlled by wireless communication. An artificial olfactory system based on array of 7 gas sensors has been installed in the mobile robot for odour recognition, and 11 gas sensors also are located in the obttom of robot to track odour sources. 3 optical sensors are also in cluded in the intelligent mobile robot, which is driven by 2 D. C. motors, for clash avoidance in a way of direction toward an odour source. Throughout the experimental trails, it is confirmed that the intelligent mobile robot is capable of not only the odour recognition using artificial neural network algorithm, but also the tracking odour source using the step-by-step approach method. The preliminary results are promising that intelligent mobile robot, which has been developed, is applicable to service robot system for environmental monitoring, localization of odour source, odour tracking of hazardous areas etc.

The performance of porous bearing under different lubricants and lubricating conditions was experimentally investigated in this study. In order to carry out the experiments, a new test rig was designed to determine the tribological properties of based sintered bronze journal bearings that were manufactured by powder metallurgy (P/M) techniques. To determine the effects of lubricating conditions with and without oil supplement (OS) on the tribological characteristics of these bearings under static loading and periodic loadings, some experiments were carried out using different lubricants. In the tests, pure base oil (SAE 20W50), two fully formulated commercial engine oils (SAE20W50) and lubricating oils with commercial additive concentration ratio of 3% were used. The worn surfaces of test bearings were examined using optical microscopy. Experimental results showed that the change in friction coefficient was more stable and in smaller magnitude under static loading than that of periodic loading. In addition, the friction coefficient and the wear rate conducted with base oil resulted in higher values than those of fully formulated oils with and without OS lubricating conditions. The experimental results obtained in this study indicated that the correct selection of lubricant and suitable running conditions were very important on the tribological characteristics of porous bearings.
Despite its benefit in engine thermal efficiency, gasoline-direct-injection (GDI) engines generate substantial particulate matter (PM) emissions compared to conventional port-fuel-injection (PFI) engines. One of the reasons for this is that the spray collapse caused by the spray-to-spray interaction forms the locally rich fuel-air mixture and increases the fuel wall film. Previous studies have investigated the spray collapse phenomenon through the macroscopic observation of spray behavior using laser optical techniques, but it is somewhat difficult to understand the interaction between sprays that is initiated in the near-nozzle region within 10 mm from the nozzle exit. In this study, the spray structure, droplet size and velocity data were obtained using an X-ray imaging technique from the near-nozzle to the downstream of the spray to investigate the spray-to-spray interaction and discuss the effects of spray collapse on local droplet size and velocity distribution. It was found that as the ambient density increases, the spray collapse was promoted due to the intensified spray-to-spray interaction, thereby increasing the local droplet size and velocity from the near-nozzle region as a result of droplet collision/coalescence.
The liquid film thickness inside a pressure-swirl nozzle was measured, and then the measured liquid film thickness was compared with the results from previous empirical equations. The liquid film inside the nozzle was visualized using extended transparent nozzles and a microscopic imaging system, and then the measurement error was evaluated using optical geometry analysis. The high injection pressures up to 7MPa were adopted to simulate the injection conditions of the direct-injection spark-ignition engines. The totally different two injectors with different fuels, nozzle lengths, nozzle diameters and swirlers were utilized to obtain the comprehensive equations. The results showed that the liquid film thickness very slightly decreased at high injection pressures and the empirical equations overestimated the effect of injection pressure. Most of empirical equations did not include the effect of nozzle length and swirler angle, although it caused significant change in liquid film thickness. A new empirical equation was suggested based on the experimental results with the effects of fuel properties, injection pressure, nozzle diameter, nozzle length and swirler angle.
Future exhaust gas limits for diesel-driven passenger cars will force the automotive industry to significantly improve the performance of engine. Since modern common-rail injection systems deliver more degrees of freedom referring to the injection process, again the optimization of the injection process could offer a possibility to meet the exhaust gas limits. This study describes the characteristic the pilot spray structure of piezo-driven injector for a passenger car common-rail system to be applicable multiple injection caused by fast response rather than solenoid-driven injector. The piezo-driven injector is prototype injector with same needle chamber of solenoid injector and the solenoid-driven one is commercial injector. The pilot spray characteristic such as spray tip penetration, spray speed, spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the Mie scattering method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. It was found that piezo-driven injector effected electric change as important factor and showed faster response than solenoid-driven injector.
