  • Han's model, which is able to analyze optical communication between earth station and geo-satellite as a function of atmospheric conditions and elevation angles. is presented. In Han's model, atmospheric conditions are roughly classified into six basic types; clear sky, cloud, haze, fog, rain and snow. Data rate satisfying for the BER below $10^{-7}$ is analyzed by Han's model in case of up-link and down-link, respectively. Data rate is more limited by up-link than by down-link because the pointing loss caused by atmosphere on the up-link is greater than the spatial coherence degradation caused by atmosphere on the down-link.

  • Nickel substituted cobalt-zinc ferrite nanoparticles with composition Co0.5Zn0.5NixFe2-xO4 (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) were synthesized using a wet chemical method named citrate precursor method. Various characterizations of the prepared nanoferrites were done using X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV visible spectroscopy and Fourier transform spectroscopy technique (FT-IR). XRD confirmed the formation of cubic spinel structure of the samples with single phase having one characteristic peak at (311). The value of optical band gap (Eg) was found to decrease with Ni substitution and have values in the range 2.30eV to 1.69eV. A Fenton-type system was created by photocatalytic activity using source of visible light for removal of methylene blue dye. Observations revealed increase in the degradation of methylene blue dye with increasing nickel content in the samples. The degradation percentage was increased from 77.32% for x = 0.25 to 90.16% for x = 1.0 in one hour under the irradiation of visible light. Also, the degradation process was found to have pseudo first order kinetics model. Hence, it can be observed that synthesized nickel doped cobalt-zinc ferrites have good capability for water purification and its degradation efficiency enhanced with increase in nickel concentration.

  • Design of a degradation test without replacement is considered based on tightened critical value to reduce the evaluation testing time. The sample size, number of inspections, and the critical values are determined to assure the same probability of acceptance when the testing time is reduced to some degree. Photo-diode balance of an optical pickup is analyzed as a case study.

  • One of the serious modern environmental problems is pollution caused by highly toxic pesticides. Only small amounts of applied pesticides reach their target, and the rest ends up in soil and water. Chlorpyrifos is a toxic, broad-spectrum organophosphate insecticide. In humans, chlorpyrifos inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in the peripheral and central nervous system, and particularly in children, small amounts of this pesticide cause neurotoxic damage. As the toxic effects of chlorpyrifos and its persistence in the environment require its removal from contaminated sites, it is essential to study the biological diversity of chlorpyrifos-degrading microorganisms. In this study, we sought to determine the chlorpyrifos-degrading ability of the bacterial strain Ochrobactrum intermedium PDB-3. This strain was isolated from soil contaminated with various pesticides and identified as PDB-3 based on morpho-cultural characteristics, MALDI-TOF MS, and 16S rRNA. Studies were conducted for 30 days in sterile soils containing initial concentrations of 50, 75, 100, and 125 mg/kg of chlorpyrifos. To determine the degradation of chlorpyrifos, a liquid culture of the strain was added to the soil at three optical densities: 0, and after 24 and 48 h (OD = 0.03, 0.2 and 0.32). Using GX-MS, we determined that chlorpyrifos was converted to 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP). We also found that with increasing optical density, rapid degradation of the initial concentration of chlorpyrifos occurred. Sterile soil without strain PDB-3 was used as a control sample.

  • There are many kinds of optical systems to widen a field of view. Fisheye lenses with view angles of 180 degrees and omni-directional systems with the view angles of 360 degrees are recognized as proper systems to widen a field of view. In this study, we proposed a new optical system to overcome drawbacks of conventional omni-directional systems such as a limited field of view in the central area and difficulties in manufacturing. Thus we can eliminate the undesirable reflection components of the omni-directional system and solve the primary drawback of the conventional system. Finally, tolerance analysis using Zernike polynomial coefficients was performed to confirm the productivity of the new optical system. Furthermore, we established a method of optical axis alignment and compensation schemes for the proposed optical system as a result of tolerance analysis. In a sensitivity calculation, we investigated performance degradation due to manufacturing error using Code V(R) macro function. Consequently, we suggested compensation schemes using a lens group decentering. This paper gives a good guidance for the optical design and tolerance analysis including the compensation method in the extremely wide angle system.

  • We design a reconfigurable optical node for metropolitan WDM networks, and numerically study the capability of the node in the optical signal level. Unlike a long-haul WDM system, major limitations of metropolitan WDM systems are power loss, fiber dispersion and optical signal-to-noise ratio(OSNR) degradation due to EDFAs. Therefore, we include the behaviors of transmitter and receiver, and fiber, EDFAs, and optical filters(MUX/DeMux) in numerical simulations with varying parameters over wide range. From simulation results, we can identify the maximum span numbers for OC-48 and OC-192 to achieve $BER<10^{-12}$ using the node structure at various received powers and residual dispersions.

  • The dependance of degradation on the blue-peak wavelength is investigated with the blue light-emitting diode (LED) of InGaN/GaN with respect to the optical and the electrical characteristics of the devices. The LED devices emitting the blue-peak wavelength ranging from 437 nm to 452 nm is prepared to be stressed for a long aging time with three different currents of 60 mA, 75 mA and 90 mA, respectively. The degradation of optical intensity is observed with and without phosphor in the devices. The device without phosphor has been degraded significantly as the wavelength of blue-peak is decreased while the optical intensity of LED device with phosphor become less sensitive than that of device without phosphor. The electrical property does not depend on the emission peak wavelength. However, the series-resistance of LED device is slowly increased as the aging time is increased. The deformation of device is observed severely the short wavelength of blue-peak even with the same current since the short wavelength is absorbed substantially at the materials of device during the aging time. Consequently, in order to enhance the lifetime of LED devices, it is important to understand the optical degradation property of the materials against the specific wavelengths emitted from the blue chip.

  • The PERC photovoltaic (PV) modules installed in PV power plant are still reports potential-induced degradation (PID) degradation due to high voltage potential differences. This is because Na+ ions in the cover glass of PV modules go through the encapsulant (EVA) and transferred to the surface of solar cells. As positive charges are accumulated at the ARC (SiOx/SiNx) interface where many defects are distributed, shunt-resistance (Rsh) is reduced. As a result, the leakage current is increased, and decrease in solar cell's power output. In this study, to prevent of this phenomenon, a Moth-eye nanostructure was deposited on the rear surface of an optical film using Nano-Imprint Lithography method, and a solar mini-module was constructed by inserting it between the cover glass and the EVA. To analyze the PID phenomenon, a cell-level PID acceleration test based on IEC 62804-1 standard was conducted. Also analyzed power output (Pmax), efficiency, and shunt resistance through Light I-V and Dark I-V. As a result, conventional solar cells were decreased by 6.3% from the initial efficiency of 19.76%, but the improved solar cells with the Moth-eye nanostructured optical film only decreased 0.6%, thereby preventing the PID phenomenon. As of Moth-eye nanostructured optical film, the transmittance was improved by 4%, and the solar module output was improved by 2.5%.

  • We have been implemented 10 Gb/s-320 km of dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) transmission. The optical link consists of a 10 Gb/s optical transceiver, an optical booster amplifier, 3 sets of optical in-line amplifiers, an optical preamplifier and transmission fibers. Firstly, we investigated the Q-factor characteristics in terms of optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) of 320 km of DSF, measured receiver sensitivity is -27 dBm and power penalty is 2 dB, respectively. We concluded that optical SNR degradation and path penalty gives rise to 1 dB penalty, respectively.

  • An infrared camera and laser common-path optical system is applied to DIRCM (directional infrared countermeasures), to increase boresighting accuracy and decrease weight. Thermal effects of a laser beam in a common-path optical system are analyzed and evaluated, to predict any degradation in image quality. A laser beam with high energy density is absorbed by and heats the optical components, and then the surface temperature of the optical components increases. The heated optical components of the common-path optical system decrease system transmittance, which can degrade image quality. For analysis, the assumed simulation condition is that the laser is incident for 10 seconds on the mirror (aluminum, silica glass, silicon) and lens (sapphire, zinc selenide, silicon, germanium) materials, and the surface temperature distribution of each material is calculated. The wavelength of the laser beam is $4{\mu}m$ and its output power is 3 W. According to the results of the calculations, the surface temperature of silica glass for the mirror material and sapphire for the lens material is higher than for other materials; the main reason for the temperature increase is the absorption coefficient and thermal conductivity of the material. Consequently, materials for the optical components with high thermal conductivity and low absorption coefficient can reduce the image-quality degradation due to laser-beam thermal effects in an infrared camera and laser common-path optical system.
