  • In this paper, we present a photonic approach for generating highly stable coherent sub-terahertz (THz) signals for wireless communications. As proof-of-concept we transmit data at 100 GHz carrier frequency using on-off keying modulation and heterodyne detection. The sub-THz carrier signals are generated by photo-mixing two optical carrier signals at different frequencies, extracted from an optical frequency comb. We introduce a novel system to stabilize the phase of the optical carrier signals. Error-free transmission is successfully achieved up to a bit rate of 8.5 Gbit/s at 100 GHz.

  • Ethernet passive optical networks (PONs) are an emerging access network technology that provides a low-cost method of deploying optical access lines between a carrier's central office and a customer site. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm of dynamic bandwidth allocation for multimedia services over Ethernet PONs. To implement the suggested dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm, we present control message formats that handle classified bandwidths in a multi-point control protocol of Ethernet PONs.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient sequencing technique, namely minimum Row time scheduling (MFTS), to manage variable-Iength message transmissions for single-hop passive starcoupled WDM optical networks. By considering not only the message length but also the state of the receivers and the tuning latency, the proposed protocol can reduce the average delay of the network greatly. This paper also introduces a new channel assignment technique latency minimizing scheduling (LMS), which aims to reduce the scheduling latency. We evaluate the proposed algorithm, using extensive discrete-event simulations, by comparing its performance with shortest job first (SJF) algorithm. We find that significant improvement in average delay could be achieved by MFTS algorithm. By combining the proposed message sequencing technique with the channel selection technique, the performance of the optical network could be further improved.

  • In the current GPON market and standard, the line bit rate requirement is changing from 1.25 Gbps to 2.5 Gbps. We fabricate a 2.5 Gbps burst-mode receiver with commercially available blocks and optimize it with an APD bias control. A burst-mode measurement setup is made for the full compliance test with the GPON standard. The device meets the partially defined 2.5 Gbps specs in the current ITU G.984.2 standard, also, supports 1.25 Gbps specs for the coexistence issue in an access network. The full-compliant measurement values can be used as a guideline for fixing "for further study" specs in the current GPON standard at 2.5 Gbps.

  • A non-coherent synchronous all-optical code-division multiple-access (CDMA) network is proposed. In this network, symmetric codes derived from prime sequence codes are used. We present the construction of symmetric codes and show that the pseudo-orthogonality of the new codes is the same as that of the original prime-sequence codes while the cardinality of the new codes is larger than that of the prime sequence codes and the modified prime codes in the same field GF(p). Therefore, an optical CDMA LAN using symmetric codes can have a larger number of potential subscribers. The new codes allow designing fully programmable serial all-optical transmitter and receiver suitable for low-loss, high-capacity, optical CDMA LANs. It is also shown that compared to systems using modified prime codes the proposed system can achieve better BER performance for low received chip optical power.

  • In this paper, we propose ultra-fast multimedia optical subscriber access network using optical frequency domain CDMA method in order to access the multimedia with multiple data rates. We numerically analyze the effects of spectral power distortion in the light source for the optical CDMA system modified PN codes and FBG(Fiber Bragg Grating)s. In the proposed multiple-rate multimedia access optical networks, the performances such as BER(Bit Error Rate) are the same for all data regardless of data rates in the case of the same number of simultaneous ONU. In the proposed ultra-fast multimedia optical subscriber access network, the performances for all data are much more improved than those in the conventional system.

  • Recently, broadband access networks have been competitively deployed all over the world with the development of various multimedia services for such a network. ETRI(Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) built the FTTH(Fiber-To-the-Home) service center to develop a next-generation equipment and a high-quality service/platform as well as to promote domestic industry in the field of optical communication. The FTTH service center has a variety of test equipments such as FTTH standard testbed for a BMT(bench mark test), a network operation center, and IPTV service equipments. Also, ETRI deployed a new type of commercial optical access networks cooperating with ISP(Internet Service Provider). This paper presents the performance evaluation of FTTH E-PON(Ethernet Passive Optical Network) system as a platform for TPS(Triple Play Service) based on QoS(Quality of Service) and QoE(Quality of Expericence) issues. This FTTH E-PON system is successfully demonstrated as an optical access network system by commercial network service provider and the FTTH service center of ETRI.

  • In this paper, we deal with an access network design problem of fiber-to-the-home passive optical network (FTTH-PON). The FTTH-PON network design problem seeks to minimize the total cost of optical splitters and cables that provide optical connectivity between central office and subscribers. We develop a flow-based mixed integer programming (MIP) model with nonlinear link cost. By developing valid inequalities and preprocessing rules, we enhance the strength of the proposed MIP model in generating tight lower bounds for the problem. We develop an effective Tabu Search (TS) heuristic algorithm that provides good quality feasible solutions to the problem. Computational results demonstrate that the valid inequalities and preprocessing rules are effective for improving the LP-relaxation lower bound and TS algorithm finds good quality solutions within reasonable time bounds.

  • In this paper, we propose a chip-level detection and a spectral-slice scheme for the tunable-transmitter/fixed-receiver (TTFR)-based asynchronous spectral phase-encoded optical codedivision multiple-access (CDMA) system combined with timeencoding. The chip-level detection can enhance the tolerance of multiple access interference (MAI) because the channel collision does not occur as long as there is at least one weighted position without MAI. Moreover, the spectral-slice scheme can reduce the interference probability because the MAI with the different frequency has no adverse effects on the channel collision rate. As a result, these techniques mitigate channel collisions. We analyze the channel collision rate theoretically, and show that the proposed system can achieve a lower channel collision rate in comparison to both conventional systems with and without the time-encoding method.
