  • A single mode fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer for the measurement of strain is described. A fiber-optic strain gauge with great resolution and wide measurement range is realized. In order to varify the dynamic response, the measurements of strain below 1涅 with frequency range 5-50Hz are compared with a semiconductor strain gauge. We report theoretical evaluation for mechanical analysis, PZT-plate, the phase change in a fiber-optic strain gauge and a semiconductor strain gauge. The dynamical characteristics of a fiber-optic strain gauge and a semiconductor strain gauge output siganl show equivalent behavior. This result is shown in very good usage as the dynamical measurement of the low strain below 1涅 by this system.

  • Integrated-optic polarization controlling devices such as polarizers, polarization splitters, and polarization converters, are proposed and demonstrated in nonlinear optic polymers. Poling-induced birefringence in electro-optic polymers is exploited to fabricate the devices. The polymeric waveguide polarizers show low excess losses, and extinction ratios of 20.7 dB and 17.1 dB for TM-pass and TE-pass polarizers, respectively. The polymeric waveguide polarization splitters exhibit TE-TM mode splittings with crosstalk of 14.2 dB and 10.1 dB for TM and TE mode splittings, respectively. The polymeric waveguide polarization converters show successful TE/TM polarization mode conversion with conversion efficiencies of higher than 30 dB. The device employs poling-induced waveguides which have slowly rotating azimuth angle of optic axis along the light propagation direction. The novel polarization converter is insensitive to wavelength and easier to fabricate than the other polarization converters containing periodic structures.

  • Photoelastic experiment has been used to analyze stress of structure and stress in the vicinity of crack tip etc.. Model experiment such as photoelastic experiment has been restricted by problem of residual stress in the photoelastic model material. They are generated by molding, cutting and time effects etc.. They produce some errors in the results of photoelastic experiment data. In this paper, stress optic law considering residual stress already developed by authors was applied to the stress concentration problem and fracture mechanics. Although the specimen was bad with residual stress, we could obtain good results by using the stress optic law considering residual stress. It was found that the stress optic law of photoelastic experiment could be applied to the stress analysis of bimaterial.

  • Accurate evaluation of polarization characteristics in the integrated optic chip (IOC) for interferometric fiber optic gyroscope was performed. Spatial distribution of optical wavetrains caused by the polarization parameters such as local polarization cross-coupling and polarization rejection coefficient of the IOC were measured utilizing the path-matched optical coherence domain polarimetry (PM-OCDP). With the analytic model deduced from Jones matrix representation, we could accurately identify the polarization characteristics of the IOC. Both degree of measurement error due to the imperfect equipment conditions in PM-OCDP and birefringence of IOC chip were also characterized.

  • This paper develops an integrated optic transmitter/receiver based on ring-type WDM PON. The optic transmitter/receiver can transmit real-time images from the CCTV of a remote street without compression and transmit TCP/IP data using an optic fiber. This system can also perform remote controls of the CCTV camera. The developed optic transmitter/receiver can provide the monitoring service of an advanced image quality of remote traffic using a broadband technology.

  • Fiber optic distributed temperature sensing and thermal line sensor are applied in an observation borehole and a loom deep borehole heat exchanger. For the case of permanently installed system fiber optic DTS is very useful. By comparing with TLS, fiber optic DTS shows good accuracy and reliability. Ground water flow can give influences at heat exchange rate of the heat pump system. According to the hydraulic characteristics and temperature-depth profile, we consider that temperature-depth profile do not seem to be dependent on ground water flow. A permanent installation of fiber optic cable is expected as a reliable temperature measurement technique in a borehole heat exchanger system.

  • Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of treadmill training with real optic flow scene on functional recovery of balance and balance self-efficacy in stroke patients. Design: Single blind, Randomized controlled trial. Methods: Nine patients following stroke were divided randomly into the treadmill with optic flow group (n=3), treadmill with virtual reality group (n=3), and control group (n=3). Subjects in the treadmill with optic flow group wore a head-mounted display in order to receive a speed modulated real optic flow scene during treadmill training for 30 minutes, while those in the treadmill with virtual reality group and control group received treadmill training with virtual reality and regular therapy for the same amount of time, five times per week for a period of three weeks. Timed up and go test (TUG) and activities-specific balance confidence scale (ABC scale) were evaluated before and after the intervention. Results: TUG in the treadmill training with optic flow group showed significantly greater improvement, compared with the treadmill training with virtual reality group and control group (p<0.05). Significantly greater improvement in the ABC scale was observed in the treadmill training with optic flow group and the tread mill training with virtual reality group, compared with the control group (p<0.05). Conclusions: Findings of this study demonstrate that treadmill training with real optic flow scene can be helpful in improving balance and balance self-efficacy of patients with chronic stroke and may be used as a practical adjunct to routine rehabilitation therapy.

  • This paper describes a technique for detecting the boundary of the optic disk in digital image of the retina using inward and outward curve evolution. Optic disk boundary offers medical information about glaucoma progresses. For accurate boundary detection, image inpainting based on PDE removes blood vessels crossing the optic disk. For removing noises and preserving boundary of optic disk in image inpainting process, the anisotropic diffusion filtering is developed. After pre-processing, the optic disk boundary is determined using inward and outward curve evolution. Experimental results show that blurring effect of original region and optic disk boundary is reduced considerably. By the proposed method, we can detect correct disk boundary compare to conventional method.

  • The measuring method of structural strain by a 3*3 passive-demodulated fiber optic interferometric sensor was developed to implement the real-time monitoring of structural status. A 3*3 fiber optic Michelson interferometric sensor was constructed to sense the value and the direction of structural strain. This sensor was applied on the cantilevered aluminum beam to experiment the sensing of the structural deformation. The digital signal processing was programmed by LabVIEW to determine the structural strain from the fiber optic signals. This program was verified by various simulated fiber optic signals. Finally, the structural was well determined by this developed program from real fiber optic signals.

  • The Propose of this paper is hierarchical detection method for the optic disc in fundus image. We detected the optic disc boundary by using the Prior information. It is based on the anatomical knowledge of fundus which are the vessel information. the image complexity. and etc. The whole method can be divided into three stages . First, we selected the region of interest(ROI) which included optic disc region. This is used to calculate location and size of the optic disc which are prior knowledge to simplify image preprocessing. And then. we divided the fundus image into numberous regions with watershed algorithm and detected intial boundary of the optic disc by reducing the number of the separated regions in ROI. Finally, we have searching the defective parts of boundary as a result of serious vessel interference in order to detect the accurate boundary of optic disc and we have removing and interpolating them.
