Objectives This study has conducted a network analysis of individual prescriptions from the Donguibogam opthalmic Chapter. In addition, medicinal herbs used for internal use were analyzed. By analyzing the correlation of these two this study aims to investigate the significance between individual herbs used in ophthalmic diseases through network analysis. Methods Medicinal herbs from Donguibogam Opthalmic Chapter were analyzed and herbal combinations were extracted from the medicinal herbs by using the network analysis tool NetMiner 4 program. Result Based on network analysis of medicinal herbs from Donguibogam Opthalmic Chapter, frequently used medicinal herbs and herbal combinations were analyzed and were consisted of 4 communities. Conclusion This study shows the most frequent medicinal herbs and herbal combinations from the Donguibogam Opthalmic Chapter. Based on the results significant medicinal herbs and combinations can be considered and moreover can be used to produce a new combination for opthalmic diseases. Further study is required since this study has excluded the component volume of herbs and the individual frequentcy of each combination.
Purpose: This study has been conducted to know the prevalence of anisometropia and corneal refraction, accommodative response of myopic anisometropia. Methods: The study subject were 67 persons who myopic anisometropia of at least 1.00D, from among 808 total subject without ophthalmic diseases history from age 5 to 89 and the test were used to examine with both eyes open-view autorefractometer (NvisionK-5001). Results: The case which anisometropia were 85(10.5%) persons and myopic anisometropia were 67(78.8%) persons among the anisometropia. Difference between higher myopic eye and lower myopic eye were -1.22D${\pm}$0.94 in spherical equivalent, -0.25D${\pm}$0.72 in accommodative response, 0.04D${\pm}$0.68 in corneal refraction. In addition, the same case of both eyes accommodative response were 33(49.3%) persons, the great case of lower myopic eye accommodative response were 25(37.3%) persons and the great case of higher myopic eye accommodative response were 9(13.4%) persons. Conclusions: Myopic anisometropia was not affected by corneal refraction and both eyes difference of spherical equivalent was less as compared with both eyes difference of accommodative response.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate antimicrobial activity of ally derivative of garlic against eye diseases, and to get basic data for an application development of the derivative, as a natural preservative, to multi-purpose solution (MPS). Methods: Antimicrobial activity of allyl derivative of garlic, diallyl sulfide (DAS), against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and Staphyloccus aereus (S. aereus) was determined. After DAS treatment in MPS of no microbial activity, its growth inhibition effect to bacteria was also determined. Results: DAS concentrations of $IC_{50}$ against P. aeruginosa and S. aereus were found when both bacteria were treated with DAS concentration of 0.25% and 0.64%, respectively. At MPS test, a product from Company A did not show any effects against both bacteria, but one from Company B showed antimicrobial activity against both bacteria. Antimicrobial activity test of the product from Company B in MPS did not showed any significant difference on both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. For a trial application of antimicrobial activity of DAS as a natural preservative, DAS was added to MPS of Company A which did not show any antimicrobial activity at treated concentration. Addition of DAS into MPS of Company A resulted in antimicrobial activity of DAS, which suggested a possible application of DAS as a germicide for contact lenses. Conclusions: This study showed allyl derivative of garlic has antimicrobial activity against both P. aeruginosa and against S. aereus, but more effects on P. aeruginosa. The result suggests that allyl derivative derived from garlic can be developed to a preservative of MPS as a natural substance.
To assess convergence and accommodation at a short distance, 92 selected subjects without any ocular diseases by apperatuses of visual chart(Shinnippon CT30) and phoropter(Shinnippon VT 10) at a short distance(40 cm) were tested upon MEM retinoscopy(Welch Allyn, USA). BELL retinoscopy(Welch Allyn, USA), binocular accommodative facility (${\pm}2.00$ D flipper. Bernell Co., USA), vergence facility(prism flipper, Bernell Co., USA). There were such test results as MEM retinoscopy(R/L)($+1.05{\pm}0.87/1.02{\pm}0.80$ D). BELL retinoscopy ($17.89{\pm}12.12/17.94{\pm}11.72cm$), binocular accommodative facility (R/G)($7.69{\pm}6.48cpm$). binocular accommodative facility(polaroid)($11.76{\pm}5.22cpm$), monocular accommodative facility(R/L) ($13.9{\pm}6.27/13.8{\pm}5.96cpm$), vergence facility($13.5{\pm}6.40cpm$).
To Analysis of Correlation of Visual Function Findings, by assessing convergence and accommodation, 92 selected objects without any ocular diseases by apperatuses of visual chart(Shinnippon CT30) and phoropter(Shinnippon VT10) at a shan distance(40 cm) were tested upon MEM retinoscopy(Welch Allyn, USA), BELL retinoscopy(Welch Allyn, USA), binocular accommodative facility (${\pm}2.00$ D nipper, Bernell Co., USA), vergence facility(prism nipper, Bernell Co., USA). The results showed as follows. MEM retinoscopy(accommodative lag) showed the same result of a right eye and left eye. Bell retinoscopy(accommodative lag) showed higher correlations between right and left eye than MEM. The lower accommodative lag meant the higher accommodative facility. The binocular accommodative facility(polaroid) was higher than binocular accommodative facility(red-green). Correlations of accommodative facility between right and left eye were higher, and as the higher monocular accommodative facility also meant the higher binocular accommodative facility, monocular and binocular accommodative facilities were relative to vergence facility, These findings can be used as a clinical guide by curing patients' visual function.
In developed and industrialized countries life expectancy has increased significantly over the past century. As a consequence, the proportion of elderly individuals in these countries has also enlarged with the resulting increased burden on health care providers. In many developing countries the problem of age related and other eye disorders has far outstripped the ability to manage them. Accordingly, the World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced an initiative: Vision 2020 - The Right to Sight, with the objective of eliminating preventable blindness by the year 2020. This paper reviews the broad range of conditions involving external and internal structures of the eye and also the effects of aging on visual functions. It is hoped that this will provide a stimulus for increased study of these disorders, improved clinical diagnosis, and an enhanced interest and role in contributing to the objectives of the WHO and the World Council of Optometry with respect to early diagnosis, prevention and management of the diseases and disorders of the eye that are more prevalent in old age.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigated the effect of vision training methods on the visual function and sensation symptoms of patients with convergence insufficiency. Mehtods: The vision training observation group included 35 clients who had binocular vision disorders without opthalmic diseases or vertical phoria. They took the each vision training once a week for eight weeks and were investigated for the function and sensation symptoms changes of binocular vision. Results: According to the results, all vision training methods showed improvement of binocular vision function and sensation symptoms. For Worth 4 Dot test, Titmus test and red lenses observed the changes in fusion rate, all the training methods showed similar improvements. Conclusions: The study proved that vision training methods for patients with binocular vision was effective for the improvement of the phoria, function and sensation symptoms of these patients.
Purpose: In this study the correlation among the myopic refractive error and ocular components in primary school students was investigated. Methods: The subjects were 62 children who had no eye diseases. The refractive error, corneal radius, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, axial length were measured and analysed. Results: Myopic refractive error in primary school students was negatively correlated with the axial length (1~3rd grade r=-0.653, p=0.000/4~6th grade r=-0.742, p=0.000), AL/CR ratio (1~3rd grade r=-0.571, p=0.000/4~6th grade r=-0.852, p=0.000). Conclusions: It was shown that the axial length and axial length(AL)/corneal radius(CR) ratio were very important data for myopic refractive error in primary school students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of asphericity according to diameter and direction of the cornea. Methods: The changes of asphericity according to diameter and direction of cornea is measured by using Pentacam(Oculus Co., Germany), as targeting 57 adults (average $27.0{\pm}4.8$, 20 men, 37 women) without any ophthalmic diseases, which may be effective in eyesight, and refractive surgery. Results: As diameter increases in every direction based on the corneal vertex, asphericity has attentively increased (p<0.05), and the size of asphericity in each direction from every measured diameter showed as superior > nasal > inferior > temporal. In group comparison by nearsightness and astigmatism level, asphericity measured high when nearsightness and astigmatism levels were higher, and this appears to be statistically attentive.(p<0.05). Conclusions: Asphericity of cornea significantly increased according to increase of diameter of cornea, and as measured figure or increased quantity appeared differently in all directions based on corneal vertex, so it helps to understand shape of cornea, and considered that is the part to be considered during manufacturing and fitting of RGP lenses.
