Operator's action time is evaluated from MAAP4 analysis used in conventional probabilistic safety assessment(PSA) of a nuclear power plant. MAAP4 code which was developed for severe accident analysis is too conservative to perform a realistic PSA. A best-estimate code such as RELAP5/MOD3, MARS has been used to reduce the conservatism of thermal hydraulic analysis. In this study, operator's action time of core cooling recovery operation is evaluated by using the MARS code, which its Fussell-Vessely(F-V) value was evaluated as highly important in a small break loss of coolant(SBLOCA) event and loss of component cooling water(LOCCW) event in previous PSA. The main conclusions were elicited : (1) MARS analysis provides larger time window for operator's action time than MAAP4 analysis and gives the more realistic time window in PSA (2) Sufficient operator's action time can reduce human error probability and core damage frequency in PSA.
Abundant information about analyses of single steam generator tube rupture (SGTR) events is available because of its importance in terms of safety. However, there are few literatures available on analyses of multiple steam generator tube rupture (MSGTR) events. In addition, knowledge of transients and consequences following a MSGTR event are very limited as there has been no occurrence of MSGTR event in the commercial operation of nuclear reactors. In this study, a postulated MSGTR event in an APR1400 is analyzed using thermal-hydraulic system code MARSI.4. The present study aims to examine the effects of affected steam generator selection. The main steam safety valve (MSSV) lift time for four cases are compared in order to examine how long operator response time is allowed depending on which steam generate. (S/G) is affected. The comparison shows that the cases where two steam generators are simultaneously affected allow longer time for operator action compared with the cases where a single steam generator is affected. Furthermore, the tube ruptures in the steam generator where a pressurizer is connected leads to the shortest operator response time.
The Bollinger Band indicating the current price position in the recent price action range is obtained by adding/substracting the simple standard deviation (SSD) to/from the simple moving average (SMA). In this paper, we first compare the characteristics of the SMA and the exponential moving average (EMA) in the operator's point of view. A basic equation is obtained between the interval length N of the SMA operator and the weighting factor ${\rho}$ of the EMA operator, that makes the centers of the 1st order momentums of each operator impulse respoinse identical. For equivalent N and ${\rho}$, frequency response examples are obtained and compared by using the discrete time Fourier transform. Based on observation that the SMA operator reacts more excessively than the EMA operator, we propose a novel exponential standard deviation (ESD) band centered at the EMA and derive an auto recursive formula for the proposed ESD band. Practical examples for the ESD band show that it has a smoother bound on the price action range than the Bollinger Band. Comparisons are also made for the gap corrected chart to show the advantageous feature of the ESD band even in the case of gap occurrence. Trading techniques developed for the Bollinger Band can be straight forwardly applied to those for the ESD band.
This study is carried out to investigate performance differences between two alarm presentation methods from the viewpoint of human factors and to provide items to be improved. One of the alarm display methods considered in this study displays alarm lists on VDT combined with hardwired alarm panels. The other method displays alarms on plant mimic diagrams of VDT. This alarm display method has other features for operator aid with which operator can get detailed information on the activated alarm in the mimic diagrams, and the capability for alarm processing such as alarm reduction and prioritization. To compare the twodisplay methods, a human factor experiment was performed with a plant simulator in the ITF(Integrated Test Fcility) that plant operators run for 4 event scenarios. During the experiment, physiological measurements, system and operator action log, and audio/video recordings were collected. Operators' subjective opinion was collected as well after the experiment. Time, error rate and situation awareness were major human factor criteria used for the comparison during the analysis stage of the experiment. No statistical significance was found in the results of our statistical comparison analysis. Several findings were identified, however, through the analysis of subjective opinions.

This paper presents an operator training simulator for power system restoration against massive black-out. The system is designed especially focused on the generality and convenient setting up for initial condition of simulation. The former is accomplished by using power flow calculation methodology, and PSS/E data is used to define the initial situation. The proposed simulator consists of three major components - the power flow(PF) module, data conversion(COW) module and GU subsystem. PF module calculates power flow, and then checks overvoltage of buses and overflow of lines. COW module composes an Y-Bus array and a data base at each restoration action. The initial Y-Bus array is constructed from PSS/E data. The user friendly GUI subsystem is developed including graphic editor and built-in operation manual. As a result, the maximum processing time for one step operation is 15 seconds, which is adequate for training purpose. Comparison with PSS/E simulation proves the accuracy and reliability of the training system.
This paper introduces a feasibility evaluation method for prognosis systems based on an empirical model in nuclear power plants. By exploiting the dynamical signature characterized by abnormal phenomena, the prognosis technique can be applied to detect the plant abnormal states prior to an unexpected plant trip. Early $operator^{\circ}{\emptyset}s$ awareness can extend available time for operation action; therefore, unexpected plant trip and time-consuming maintenance can be reduced. For the practical application in nuclear power plant, it is important not only to enhance the advantages of prognosis systems, but also to quantify the negative impact in prognosis, e.g., uncertainty. In order to apply these prognosis systems to real nuclear power plants, it is necessary to conduct a feasibility evaluation; the evaluation consists of 4 steps (: the development of an evaluation method, the development of selection criteria for the abnormal state, acquisition and signal processing, and an evaluation experiment). In this paper, we introduce the feasibility evaluation method and propose further study points for applying prognosis systems from KHNP's experiences in testing some prognosis technologies available in the market.
A helicopter is used in a variety of situations because of its usability. Its operation, needs human skill. The authors are working on automatization of human skill. Helicopter operation is one of such fields of practicing human skill. This is why the present paper deals with helicopter (model helicopter) operation. Full operation of a helicopter needs more complicated system in both aspects of software and hardware, and also requires more training for operation. From the purpose here that helicopter operation is for checking the applicability of the authors' idea for automatization based on experience, attitude regulation in hovering is the target. In the present paper, a human operator's operation is recorded as a time series of operation actions, and the record is reorganized as the correspondence between the helicopter's attitude and the proper operation action required in that particular situation.
Background: Underground mines have several hazards that could lead to serious consequences if they come into effect. Acquiring, evaluating, and using the real-time data from the atmospheric monitoring system and miner's positional information is crucial in deciding the best course of action. Methods: A graphical user interface-based software is developed that uses an AutoCAD-based mine map, real-time atmospheric monitoring system, and miners' positional information to guide on the shortest route to mine exit and other locations within the mine, including the refuge chamber. Several algorithms are implemented to enhance the visualization of the program and guide the miners through the shortest routes. The information relayed by the sensors and communicated by other personnel are collected, evaluated, and used by the program in proposing the best course of action. Results: The program was evaluated using two case studies involving rescue relating to elevated carbon monoxide levels and increased temperature simulating fire scenarios. The program proposed the shortest path from the miner's current location to the exit of the mine, nearest refuge chamber, and the phone location. The real-time sensor information relayed by all the sensors was collected in a comma-separated value file. Conclusion: This program presents an important tool that aggregates information relayed by sensors to propose the best rescue strategy. The visualization capability of the program allows the operator to observe all the information on a screen and monitor the rescue in real time. This program permits the incorporation of additional sensors and algorithms to further customize the tool.
A model free controller utilizing a set of linguistic fuzzy logic of the human operator's experience is developed to control the steam generator water level in a pressurized water reactor. Only 9 rules for control action are generated from the inputs of water level error and mass flow error implicitly representing the time variation of the collapsed water level. The bell type membership functions of the premise side and the result side are tuned by the sensitivity study. This compact fuzzy logic controller shows a robust control during transient and no offset error and oscillation during steady state operation. For a multi-ramp power increase from start-up to full power, the proposed controller shows good performance for the entire range.
Excavators are construction machines used for digging soil, transporting soil, dismantling buildings and clearing the ground at construction sites. There are various attachments attached to the arm end of the excavator and used for various operations. There are the most common types of buckets attached for excavation and other types of attachments used for foresting, road cleaning, snow removal, and waste disposal. When multiple types of work are done at the same time, several attachments must be replaced and a device called a quick coupler is used to reduce replacement time. Although a quick coupler reduces the replacement time of the Attachment, it is necessary to attach safety devices to prevent unintentional detachment of attached attachments during the operation. To prevent the attachment from leaving or falling regardless of the operator's intention, support is installed in the hook of the bucket pin and controlled through a separate hydraulic cylinder to ensure safety. When attaching an attachment, it shall be attached without any action. This study is intended to verify the design validity of safety devices to prevent falls of attachments occurring at construction sites.
