  • Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO), also known as Danuri, was successfully launched on 4 Aug. from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station using a Space-X Falcon-9 rocket. Flight dynamics (FD) operational readiness was one of the critical parts to be checked before the flight. To demonstrate FD software's readiness and enhance the operator's contingency response capabilities, KPLO FD specialists planned, organized, and conducted four simulations and two rehearsals before the KPLO launch. For the efficiency and integrity of FD simulation and rehearsal, different sets of blind test data were prepared, including the simulated tracking measurements that incorporated dynamical model errors, maneuver execution errors, and other errors associated with a tracking system. This paper presents the simulation and rehearsal results with lessons learned for the KPLO FD operational readiness checkout. As a result, every functionality of FD operation systems is firmly secured based on the operation procedure with an enhancement of contingency operational response capability. After conducting several simulations and rehearsals, KPLO FD specialists were much more confident in the flight teams' ability to overcome the challenges in a realistic flight and FD software's reliability in flying the KPLO. Moreover, the results of this work will provide numerous insights to the FD experts willing to prepare deep space flight operations.

  • Because of the global warming, the Arctic Ocean is expected to be ice-free by the year 2035. When the Arctic Ocean will be opened, a number of national interests will become more salient as experiencing a shortened sailing distance and decreasing navigation expense, possibility of natural resources transport by sea from Arctic Circle, and indirect-profit making by building a herb port in Asia. To secure the national interests and support the free activities of people in this region, R.O.K government is trying to make advanced policies. In order to carry out the naval tasks in the Arctic Ocean, using the operational characteristics(mobility, flexibility, sustainability, presence of capabilities, projection) is necessary. To this end, ROK Navy should analyze the operational environment (O.E.) by its capability(weakness and strength), opportunity, and threat. R.O.K. Navy should make an effort over the following issues to implement the tasks in the Arctic Ocean: first, Navy needs to map out her own plan (Roadmap) under the direction of government policies and makes crews participate in the education·training programs in home and abroad for future polar experts. Third, to develop the forces and materials for the tasks in cold, far operations area, Navy should use domestic well-experienced shipbuilding skills and techniques of the fourth industrial revolution. Next, improving the combined operations capabilities and military trust with other countries in the Arctic region to cover the large area with lack of forces' number and to resolve the ports of call issues. Lastly, preparation in advance to execute a variety of missions against military and non-traditional threats such as epidemics, HA/DR, SOLAS, in the future operation area is required.

  • The aim of this paper is to analyze China's naval strengthening and threat reflected in submarines, aircraft, destroyers and missile capabilities and US Navy's counter-forces. China is strengthening its naval forces in accordance with its three-step naval force build-up plan, and the introduction of Russian destroyers and submarines is a foothold for China's naval enforcement. The Chinese Navy also converted the concept of the First-Second Island Chain Defense, which it had already maintained, to the concept of maritime layer defense. Currently, the Chinese Navy maintains the concept of a Three-Maritime Layer Defense which includes the South China Sea, where artificial islands are being built by China, in the First Layer Defense and the East China Sea in the Third Layer Defense. Along with the advancement of Chinese Navy's submarines, surface vessels and aircraft's operational capabilities, ballistic and cruise missile capabilities become a major threat to the US Navy. If a crisis occurs in the East China Sea or in the Taiwan Waters, the US Navy will face more difficulties in employing the Carrier Strike Group to manage the crisis. Meanwhile, if a crisis occurs on the Korean Peninsula, it will be a burden to dispatch Carrier Strike GroupS to the East and West Seas of the Korean Peninsula. For the stable future, the US Navy should develop a strategy to respond more effectively to the Chinese Navy, which is challenging new maritime supremacy in East Asia.

  • The development of innovative technology through the 4th Industrial Revolution is actively used in the defense field. In particular, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities using drones will be of great help to the development of military combat capabilities, such as preparing for future military personnel reductions and reinforcing alert capabilities. In this study, we analyze the combat efficiency of drones how helpful drones can be to the military operations through simulations. Drones and enemy move in the efficient shortest path within a two-dimensional space in which operational areas are mapped into number such as detection probability. Based on the detection probability of an enemy infiltrating along the path with the lowest detection probability, the detection probability change that occurs whenever a drone is additionally deployed is presented, and we analyze the combat efficiency according to the additional drone input. Simulation proves that the increase in combat efficiency decreases as more drones are added in small operational areas such as company-level operational areas. This study is expected to contribute to the efficient operation of a limited number of drones in company-level units and to help determine the most desirable quantity of drones for additional combat power improvement.

  • This study examines the factors influencing container shipping carrier selection among coastal shippers in China amid the pressing external challenges posed by the U.S.-China trade conflict and the COVID-19 pandemic, during a period when China is implementing policies to open its maritime market. Using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze survey data, the research identifies multi-modal transportation services, carrier operational capabilities, and logistics risk management as key determinants. Notably, salesperson professionalism, cargo safety, and fleet stability during peak periods emerged as critical factors for shippers. The disruptions caused by the trade conflict and the pandemic have heightened shippers' focus on risk management and transportation reliability, further emphasizing the importance of carrier service quality and operational capabilities. This study underscores the need for carriers to strengthen their risk management capacities and enhance service quality in response to shifting global conditions. Additionally, the findings suggest that policymakers should consider regulatory adjustments to mitigate uncertainties in the shipping industry. Future research should delve deeper into the long-term impacts of external shocks on carrier selection decisions.

  • FMS is two or more computer controlled units interconnected with automated workhandling equipment and supervised by an executive computer having random scheduling capabilities. The complex nature of a FMS, coupled with the need to maximize its performance, means that such a system can be effectly designed only by iterative computer simulation methods. At the operational level, simulation had a reduced role to evaluate the performance of planned FMS under a variety of operating strategies. This is probably due to the fact that few simulation models are able to access the current status data of the system. This study reviews the role of simulation for design/operation of FMS and suggests an interface scheme for incorporating a simulation package with a FMS operational database. This scheme can be used for reducing the performance gap between design and real operation of a FMS.
