  • Let (X, J) be a closed, connected almost complex four-manifold. Let $X_1$ be the complement of an open disc in X and let ${\varepsilon}_1$be the contact structure on the boundary ${\varepsilon}X_1$ which is compatible with a symplectic structure on $X_1$, Then we show that (X, J) is symplectic if and only if the contact structure ${\varepsilon}_1$ on ${\varepsilon}X_1$ is isomorphic to the standard contact structure on the 3-sphere $S^3$ and ${\varepsilon}X_1$is J-concave. Also we show that there is a contact structure ${\varepsilon}_0\ on\ S^2\times\ S^1$which is not strongly symplectically fillable but symplectically fillable, and that $(S^2{\times}S^1,\;{\varepsilon})$ has infinitely many non-diffeomorphic minimal fillings whose restrictions on$\S^2\times\ S^1$are ${\sigma}$ where ${\sigma}$ is the restriction of the standard symplectic structure on $S^2{\times}D^2$.

  • In 1980 and 1983, it was proved that P $D^{2}$-groups are surface groups ([2], [3]). Since then, topologists have been positively studying about P $D^{n}$ -groups (or $D^{n}$ -groups). For example, let a topological space X have a right .pi.-action, where .pi. is a multiplicative group. If each x.memX has an open neighborhood U such that for each u.mem..pi., u.neq.1, U.cap. $U_{u}$ =.phi., this right .pi.-action is said to be proper. In this case, if X/.pi. is compact then (1) .pi.$_{1}$(X/.pi).iden..pi.(X:connected, .pi.$_{1}$: fundamental group) ([4]), (2) if X is a differentiable orientable manifold with demension n and .rho.X (the boundary of X)=.phi. then $H^{k}$ (X;Z).iden. $H_{n-k}$(X;Z), ([6]), where Z is the set of all integers.s.

  • Elasticity solutions for bi-directional functionally graded beams subjected to arbitrary lateral loads are conducted, with emphasis on the end effects. The material is considered macroscopically isotropic, with Young's modulus varying exponentially in both axial and thickness directions, while Poisson's ratio remaining constant. In order to obtain an exact analysis of stress and displacement fields, the symplectic analysis based on Hamiltonian state space approach is employed. The capability of the symplectic framework for exact analysis of bi-directional functionally graded beams has been validated by comparing numerical results with corresponding ones in open literature. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the influences of the material gradations on localized stress distributions. Thus, the material properties of the bi-directional functionally graded beam can be tailored for the potential practical purpose by choosing suitable graded indices.

  • A theoretical formulation is performed to investigate the wave reflection and transmission ratios by a submerged multi-layered rubble-mound breakwater. This theory, which is based on the linear boundary integral method, can be extended to the multi-layered breakwater with arbitrary cross section. In the theoretical analysis evanescent mode wave is not considered, since fictitious open boundaries are put on the places far from the structure. Therefore the mathematical presentation may be simpler, and computational time shorter. The validity of obtained numerical results is demonstrated by comparing with ones of impermeable and permeable breakwaters. Comparison shows resonable agreement. On the basis of these verifications this theory is applied to the one and two-layered submerged rubble-mound breakwater with trapezoidal type.

  • Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) columns are increasingly being used in various engineering fields due to its high strength to weight ratio and corrosion resistance. Being a thin-walled structure, their designs are often governed by buckling.Buckling strength depends on state of stress of elements which is greatly influence by stacking sequence and various inaccuracies such as geometric imperfections and imperfections due to eccentricity of compressive load and non-uniform boundary conditions. In the present work, influence of load eccentricity on buckling strength of FRP column has been investigated by conducting parametric study. Numerical analyses were carried out by using finite element software ABAQUS. The finite element (FE) model was validated using experimental results from the literature, which demonstrated good agreement in terms of failure loads and deformed shapes. The influence of load eccentricity on buckling behavior is discussed with the help of developed graphs.

  • In this work, the free vibration analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich plates with porosity is conducted using the p-version of the finite element method (FEM), which is based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The sandwich plate consists of two face-sheet layers of FGM and a homogeneous core layer. The obtained results are validated using convergence and comparison studies with previously published results. Five porosities distribution models of FGM sandwich plates are assumed and analyzed. The effect of the thickness ratio, boundary conditions, volume fraction exponents, and porosity coefficients of the top and bottom layers of FGM sandwich plates on the natural frequency are addressed.

  • In this study, when seawall or harbor gate is installed for coastal disaster prevention, a two-dimensional water analysis in the bay is carried out to consider the flood amount of river inflow and effect of harbor gate. The Yeongsan river and the port Mokpo area are selcected for the study region. Then, by analyzing the hydraulic characteristics of flood flow of the Yeongsan river, we analysed the compatibility of the results in the two-dimensional hydrodynamic model. A tw-odimensional water analysis were conducted for the four cases considering whether a harbor gate is installed or not, and whether the inland water boundary condition is considered or not, also with open sea boundary condition. The results of the two-dimensional water analysis shows that water level change near the port Mokpo area is mainly caused by the discharge of the estuary barrage of the Yeongsan river because the harbor gate was installed. In addition, it is revealed that the volume of reservoir created by the harbor gate and the estuary barrage is too much small compared to the volume of the discharge from the Yeongsan river. Therefore, when the harbor gate is installed in the open sea, we concluded that a flexible management between the harbor gate and the estuary barrage of the Yeongsan river is required. A initial water level of the bay and outflow from the harbor gate are proposed for disaster prevention in the coastal area of port Mokpo.

  • The wintertime upwind flow in the Yellow Sea has been investigated through a series of two-dimensional numerical experiments in an idealized basin. A total of 10 experiments have been carried out to examine the effects of wind forcing, bottom friction and the presence of oceanic currents sweeping the shelf of the East China Sea. A spatially uniform steady and periodic wind stresses are considered along with comparison of linear and quadratic formulations. The wind-driven flow in the absence of oceanic current has been computed using Proudman open boundary condition (POBC), while the wind-driven current in the presence of oceanic current has been computed using Flather’s radiation condition (FOBC). The oceanic currents to be prescribed at the open boundary have been simulated by specifying uniform sea level gradients across the Taiwan Strait and the eastern ECS shelf, Calculations show that, as seen in Lee et al. (2000), oceanic flow little penetrates into the Yellow Sea in the absence of wind forcing unless a unrealistically low rate of bottom frictional dissipation is assumed. Both steady and time-periodic wind stresses invoke the upwind flow along the central trough of the Yellow Sea, independently of the presence of the oceanic current. The presence of oceanic currents very marginally alters the north-south gradient of the sea surface elevation in the Yellow Sea. Changes in the intensity and direction of the wind-induced mean upwind flow are hardly noticeable in the Yellow Sea but are found to be significant near Cheju Island where the gradient is reduced and therewith contribution of Ekman transport increases. In case of steady wind forcing circulation patterns such as two gyres on the slope sides, a cyclonic gyre on the western slope and an anticyclonic gyre on the eastern slope persist and the upwind flow composes part of the cyclonic gyre in the Yellow Sea. While in case of the time-periodic wind stress the appearance and disappearance of the patterns are repeated according to the time variation of the wind stress and the upwind flow accordingly varies with phase delay, mostly intensifying near the time when the wind forcing is approximately near the middle of the decaying stage.

  • The olfactory organ of Carassius auratus and C. cuvieri was compared morphologically and morphometrically using stereomicroscopy and statistical program (SPSS version 18.0). The external morphology of the olfactory organ consists of the open semicircular anterior and posterior nostril, and nasal flap. The internal structure showed the oval rosette consisting of several lamellae arranged radiately. In statistical analysis of standard length (SL), olfactory lamellar number (LN), and SL/LN ratio between two species using independent two sample t-test and Pearson's correlation and coefficient, C. cuvieri is the longer SL than that of C. auratus and C. auratus LN (14~20) is lager than that of C. cuvieri (14~16) (P<0.001) and C. auratus LN/SL ratio (12.7±0.7%) is larger than that of C. cuvieri (8.2±0.6%). These results suggest that i) open semicircular nostrils is functional morphology to offset the boundary layer and ii) the lager LN of smaller C. auratus may be a morphological adaptation to reflect its higher olfactory dependence than C. cuvieri and iii) such interspecific difference in LN and LN/SL ratio could be applied as a new taxonomic trait for identification.
