A Program Development and Implementation Enhancing to Understand Generations between Adolescent Children and Parents (청소년자녀와 어머니를 위한 세대간 이해증진 프로그램 개발 및 실시)

  • The relationship between adolescent children and parents has a profound effect on not only the adolescents development into healthy adults but also the psychological welfare of the parent. A program focused to improve adolescents relationship with parents has not been developed until now. To achieve the educational goals enhancing mutual understanding, it is more effective to educate both the parents and adolescent children. Thus, this study developed and carried out a program in which adolescent children and mothers, being fully in charge of raising children, participated. The study analyzed the program effects after implementing on 6 pairs of adolescent children and mothers. The results are as follows: 1) adolescent children and mothers placed high values on the fact that they can understand each other well, 2) both parties accepted each other by recognizing the inevitability of the generation gap, and 3) the program gave them a chance to admit that they should try to communicate openly. Most of all, adolescent children could find self-confidence while mothers could collect valuable data essential to raise children and build a new mother's role model adapting to social changes.

Effects of Brand-Self Image Congruence on Attitudes toward Children's Wear Brands -Focus on Children's Image, Actual Image and Ideal Image- (브랜드-자기 일치성이 아동복 브랜드 태도에 미치는 영향 -아동 이미지, 실제 이미지, 이상적 이미지를 중심으로-)

  • Self-congruency plays an important role in the context of mothers' shopping for children's clothing because purchasers are inconsistent with users. This study incorporates three dimensions of self-congruencies (congruency between children's image perceived by their mothers and brand image, congruency between mothers' actual self-image and brand image, and congruency between mothers' ideal self-image and brand image) due to purchaser-user inconsistency in children's clothing consumption. A total of 574 mothers with children aged 6 to 10 participated in a web-based survey. Descriptive statistical analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted. Self-brand image congruency variables have a different influence on brand attitudes when mothers purchase children's clothing. Brand attitude is influenced positively only when the perceived children's image coincides with brand image and when mothers' ideal self-image corresponds to brand image. In contrast, mothers' actual self-image and brand image congruence negatively influence brand attitude. Further investigation indicates that there are different effects of dimensions of self-congruency on brand attitude according to the characteristics of mothers and their children. This study suggests that when there is purchaser-user inconsistency, different types of image congruence has to be implemented to assess the impact on brand attitudes.

Effects of Children's Peer Initiative on Peer Acceptance: Focusing on Moderating Effects of Teacher-Child Relationships (유아의 또래주도성이 또래수용도에 미치는 영향: 교사-유아 관계의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • Objective: This study aimed to provide a systematic understanding of children's peer initiative and peer acceptance and to offer specific information to increase young children's social competence. Methods: Participants were 235 5-year-old children from six child care centers in Sejong City. The participants were interviewed to measure the peer acceptance of children attending the same class. Also, a survey was conducted on their teachers to measure children's peer initiative and the relationship with them. The collected data were analyzed by hierarchical regression using the SPSS 21.0 program. Results: The results showed that significant main effects of friendly and unfriendly peer-initiatives on peer acceptance were found. The effects of teacher-child relationships and their moderating effects, however, were partial; only main influences of close relationships and the interaction effects between peer-initiatives and close relationships were significant. That is, the relationships between improper initiatives and low acceptance levels among peers were more intense when children established conflict relationships with their teacher. Conclusion/Implications: We found that close teacher-child relationships play moderating roles on the pathway from peer initiative to peer acceptance as a protective risk factor for children.

Functional outcomes in children with reduction glossectomy for vascular malformations - "less is more!"

  • Objectives: Vascular malformation (VM) of the tongue can cause true macroglossia in children. Reduction glossectomy provides primary relief when sclerotherapy has failed or is not possible. In this study, we evaluated the surgical role in functional outcome of reduction glossectomy performed for VM of the tongue. Patients and Methods: We evaluated the functional and surgical outcomes of seven children who were treated at a tertiary care centre in Southern India between 2013 and 2018. Results: Six children underwent median glossectomy, while one child underwent lateral glossectomy. Functional assessment was performed at least 2 years after the date of surgery. At the time of assessment, speech was comprehensible for three children and was occasionally unintelligible in four children. Taste and swallowing were normal in all seven children. Six children exhibited a minimal residual lesion after surgery, of which only one was symptomatic. Residual lesions were managed with sclerotherapy (n=3), observation (n=2), or repeat surgery (n=1). Conclusion: Reduction glossectomy in children with macroglossia secondary to VMs has acceptable outcomes in terms of cosmesis and speech, with no gastronomic restriction.

Influence of Characteristic of Children and Parents on the Reaction of Children in Phlebotomy (아동과 부모의 특성이 채혈 시 아동의 반응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to confirm the arguments that the role of the parents in sampling blood specimens from their children should be increased to reduce the anxiety and fear of children. The support and confidence of the parents, the reaction of the children and the subsequent action by phlebotomists should help to make an efficient sampling process for children. We randomly selected 50 children and their parents and had them fill out questionnaires before and after phlebotomy. The results were: 1. Detailed explanation by parents made children more active in sampling; 2. Higher confidence levels made parents more active in supporting children and relieving them from pain; 3. Confidence levels were higher in male children than in female children; 4. The confidence levels of parents were higher in parents of children with experience of multiple samplings and the highest level of confidence was observed in parents of children aged 61 to 120 months; 5. Only children showed the highest reaction level and very negative reactions; 6. The reaction of the phlebotomist was positive with children in good moods and negative with ones in bad moods. These results could serve as a basic tool in coping with children in phlebotomy.

  • This study examined the effectiveness of an Emotional Education Curriculum. The subjects were 55 five-year-old children attending a kindergarten located in Kangbuk-gu, Seoul. Using the pre- and post-test model, the Thinking, Feeling, Behaving Curriculum was employed two to three times a week for 15 weeks in the experimental group. Data were analyzed by t-test and ANOVA. This study indicates that the Thinking, Feeling, Behaving Emotional Education Curriculum was effective in understanding young children's emotional self-perception and empathy, but the curriculum was only partially effective in improving young children's social behaviors.

  • The ultimate goal of the term alteration to pediatrics is that not only infants and children but also adlescents are subjet to pediatrics. At 27, June, 2007 the term pediatrics was altered to pediatrics (children and aoldescent medicine). From now on the roles of pediatricians for adolescents are needed and adolescent medicine should be reorganized in Korea. Although the numbers of children are decreased in the times of low birth rate, the efforts of pediatricians try to enlarge the range of treatment for adolescents are need.

  • The speech intelligibility of congenitally deafened children shows the change after cochlear implantation. The predicting factors of change in speech intelligibility are the age of implantation, the duration of implant use, and communication mode etc.. Among these factors, the age of implantation seems to be one of the most important predictors. But those factors including age of implantation can explain only some parts of the variance. Therefore, the further study to find the factors which affect the speech intelligibility should be done.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the changes and the characteristics of the attitudes toward children and spaces provided for them. by analyzing people's daily lives in housing spaces and architects' floor plans between the 1920s and the 1960s. Different kinds of data were obtained from a variety of early literature, research reports, newspaper articles, historical documents, and magazines from the period. Findings of this study are as follows: 1. Before modernization in Korea, children had been regarded as immature persons. Confucian ideas of children viewed them as 'small adults' or 'immature adults.' Thus spaces for children's daily lives were neither differentiated from those of the adults' nor deemed important. However, since the Western invasions and colonization by Japan, a remarkable change in the attitudes toward children took place. Children began to be considered a hope for the future as well as members of modem families. In addition, the introduction of the new word, 'eorini (children),' by Mr. Bang Jeonghwan, brought about a significant change in social consciousness of children. 2. The appearance of 'adongshil (children's room)' on architects' floor plans, which was a result of the social critique against androcentrism during the l930s and 1940s, was highly meaningful. The new floor plans not only emphasized rationalization of the space but also upgraded the children's status in the family. 3. Since the liberation (1945), children's space was differentiated from parental spare by the introduction of private rooms and shared spaces. The privacy of each generation was expressed by the division, and the generations were considered equal in this space distribution. In conclusion, the appearance of children's rooms required conflict-laden changes of social ideals and of the family system. It also was a symbol of modernization.

Multiple Intestinal Perforations in a Child with Behcet's Disease (소아 베체트 병에서 발생된 복부 천공 1예)

  • Behcet's disease (BD) is a multisystem inflammatory disorder dominated clinically by recurrent oral and genital ulceration, uveitis and erythema nodosum. BD is very rare in children, especially those less than 10 years of age, who account for only an estimated 5% of all cases. Gastrointestinal ulcers, in patients with Behcet's disease with intestinal involvement are rare and have been reported in only 1-2% of all cases. The intestinal ulcers of Behcet's disease are usually multiple and scattered and tend to cause perforations associated with significant morbidity. Patients with BD and abdominal symptoms must be evaluated thoroughly for potential perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. Here we report the case of a 4 year 9 month old child with multiple perforations of the gastrointestinal tract associated with BD.
