A Study on the Empathy Competence of Adolescents Using Empathic Reading Based on Online Remote Classes (비대면 온라인 원격수업 기반의 공감독서를 활용한 청소년의 공감역량에 관한 연구)

  • The study is aimed at designing an effective edutech platform based on online remote classes, and clarifying the effect of empathy competence of youths through the operation linked with the empathic reading program focusing on reading. To this end, after constructing the environment for education and drawing a class model based on components of edutech for remote classes on the basis of previous studies and elaborating the empathic reading education program, this study has been conducted for one semester for 107 students in 4 classes in their 1st grade at S middle school, Gyeonggi-do in order to apply them to fields. As a result of the study, the empathy reading program that a remote class model was applied has shown a meaningful difference among groups in cognitive empathy and emotional empathy, and it was found that there was a statistically meaningful difference between the two groups in total scores. Besides, the effect and meaning of adolescents' empathy competence have been verified through the remote empathy reading education and the empirical analysis, and the direction to develop the empathy reading program has been suggested for a solution to settle differences in students' learning due to COVID-19.

  • 안드로이드 앱의 불법 복제를 방지하고자 기존에 온라인 실행(Online Execution Class: OEC) 또는 앱을 암호화된 상태로 배포하여 실행 시에 적법한 사용자만이 암호를 복호화하여 실행이 가능하도록 하는 방법들이 있다. 하지만 스마트폰이 저전력과 저사양인 점을 고려할 때, 위에 방법은 스마트폰의 보안을 보장할 수 있지만 성능 면에서 부담이 된다. 본 논문에서 OEC를 암호화하여 보안 수준을 높이고 개발자에게 보안 수준을 선택할 수 있게 하여 환경에 맞추어 안전을 유지할 수 있도록 시스템 설계를 제안한다.

Interactive learning in oral and maxillofacial radiology

  • Purpose: The use of electronic tools in teaching is growing rapidly in all fields, and there are many options to choose from. We present one such platform, Learning Catalytics$^{TM}$ (LC) (Pearson, New York, NY, USA), which we utilized in our oral and maxillofacial radiology course for second-year dental students. Materials and Methods: The aim of our study was to assess the correlation between students' performance on course exams and self-assessment LC quizzes. The performance of 354 predoctoral dental students from 2 consecutive classes on the course exams and LC quizzes was assessed to identify correlations using the Spearman rank correlation test. The first class was given in-class LC quizzes that were graded for accuracy. The second class was given out-of-class quizzes that were treated as online self-assessment exercises. The grading in the self-assessment exercises was for participation only and not accuracy. All quizzes were scheduled 1-2 weeks before the course examinations. Results: A positive but weak correlation was found between the overall quiz scores and exam scores when the two classes were combined (P<0.0001). A positive but weak correlation was likewise found between students' performance on exams and on in-class LC quizzes (class of 2016) (P<0.0001) as well as on exams and online LC quizzes (class of 2017) (P<0.0001). Conclusion: It is not just the introduction of technological tools that impacts learning, but also their use in enabling an interactive learning environment. The LC platform provides an excellent technological tool for enhancing learning by improving bidirectional communication in a learning environment.

Perceived Interaction in Online Classes and Technology Acceptance Model to Student Satisfaction (원격교육환경에서 기술수용모델과 상호(相互)작용이 고객만족에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper examines an augmented technology acceptance model, which includes perceived interaction as a mediator in the relationships between the technology acceptance model (perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness) and student satisfaction in online classes, and its impact on student satisfaction. Data has been collected from 842 undergraduate students in online universities. The data is analyzed by using factor analysis and structural equation modeling techniques. The results demonstrate that perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and perceived interaction serve as predictors for student satisfaction in online classes. Perceived usefulness has a positive relationship with perceived interaction while perceived ease of use has no effect on interaction.

Exploring Opinions on University Online Classes During the COVID-19 Pandemic Through Twitter Opinion Mining (트위터 오피니언 마이닝을 통한 코로나19 기간 대학 비대면 수업에 대한 의견 고찰)

  • This study aimed to understand how people perceive the transition from offline to online classes at universities during the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve the goal, we collected tweets related to online classes on Twitter and performed sentiment and time series topic analysis. We have the following findings. First, through the sentiment analysis, we found that there were more negative than positive opinions overall, but negative opinions had gradually decreased over time. Through exploring the monthly distribution of sentiment scores of tweets, we found that sentiment scores during the semesters were more widespread than the ones during the vacations. Therefore, more diverse emotions and opinions were showed during the semesters. Second, through time series topic analysis, we identified five main topics of positive tweets that include class environment and equipment, positive emotions, places of taking online classes, language class, and tests and assignments. The four main topics of negative tweets include time (class & break time), tests and assignments, negative emotions, and class environment and equipment. In addition, we examined the trends of public opinions on online classes by investigating the changes in topic composition over time through checking the proportions of representative keywords in each topic. Different from the existing studies of understanding public opinions on online classes, this study attempted to understand the overall opinions from tweet data using sentiment and time series topic analysis. The results of the study can be used to improve the quality of online classes in universities and help universities and instructors to design and offer better online classes.

SAUDI ARABIAN UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS' PERCEPTIONS OF E-LEARNING QUALITY DURING COVID19 PANDEMIC

  • The quality of the E-learning education in Saudi Arabia has been a major concern by many academicians, especially, and people in general as this platform has not been a priority for education. Not until recently, the world has been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, which makes every education institution shifted to the online platform to continue the education for the students. Thus, many studies on the perceptions on the online learning have been carried out, and though many are focusing on the perceptions by the education institutions' faculty and administration, there is a lack in the amount of study performed to analyse the students' perceptions of online learning during the pandemic time. The current study is conducted by utilising qualitative methods in order to collect information and investigate the students' perception regarding online learning during the pandemic Covid-19, based on their individual experiences. A number of fifteen (15) students were selected as respondents for the study, in which structured interviews were conducted by using a convenient sampling technique for data collection. Through the discussion, all of the positive and negative perceptions of online learning, as well as the factors contributing to those perceptions were identified. The results of the study found that the positive perceptions were contributed based on the flexibility, cost-effectiveness, availability of the electronic research databases, and well-designed online classroom interfaces. For the negative perceptions from using online learning platforms, the respondents informed that they were contributed by the lecturer's delayed feedback, lack of technical support by lecturers, low in self-esteem and self-motivation, feel isolated, one-way of educational methods, and poorly-designed class materials. Through the findings, the school's administration and lecturers would be able to know the struggles experienced by the students, and eventually come out with better solutions to improve their teaching methods.

  • This study analyze Online class's current condition in Smart era. And suggest better operation model based on Internet Architecture. This study focuses the condition of e-learning operation model in University online class. Especially, 'Time Check Idea' that using for attendance on e-learning class has some side effects. So this study would applied 'Qualitative Check Idea Concept' on e-learning class. Question Based System, QBS is example model. QBS is leading a Learner's participation in e-class by Making Quiz. These quizs are shared with other students and refer to studing contents. Practically operating Qualitative Concept model QBS on university e-class, we can seek for the effectiveness of Qualitative e-learning model QBS.

Exploration of High School Science Teachers' Perceptions on Instruction and Assessment of Science II Elective Courses in the 2015 Revised Curriculum

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the status of the field application of the Science II career electives with the application of the 2015 revised curriculum up to the 3rd year of high school. This study focused on examining high school science teachers' perceptions of the student-participatory class and process-centered assessment in Science II subjects, which are career-intensive high school science electives. A total of 192 science teachers responded to the survey questionnaire, and 12 teachers participated in interviews. In the in-depth interviews conducted to supplement the survey results, questions were asked about changes in the overall class, the status of student-participatory classes, and changes in the assessment of Science II subjects due to the emphasis on process-centered assessment. The main research results included teachers' perceptions of changes in teaching and assessment methods with the application of the revised curriculum, the degree to which the eight skills used in Science II classes develop the key competencies of science, and the teaching and assessment methods commonly used in Science II classes. Science teachers generally agreed with the purpose and necessity of introducing student-participatory classes and process-centered assessment, which are the core purpose of the 2015 revised curriculum. However, they had difficulties in practice due to the excessive content of Science II subjects. Problems were also encountered with securing objectivity and fairness during assessments and the operation of online science classes due to COVID-19.

Classification of ratings in online reviews (온라인 리뷰에서 평점의 분류)

  • Sentiment analysis or opinion mining is a technique of text mining employed to identify subjective information or opinions of an individual from documents in blogs, reviews, articles, or social networks. In the literature, only a problem of binary classification of ratings based on review texts in an online review. However, because there can be positive or negative reviews as well as neutral reviews, a multi-class classification will be more appropriate than the binary classification. To this end, we consider the multi-class classification of ratings based on review texts. In the preprocessing stage, we extract words related with ratings using chi-square statistic. Then the extracted words are used as input variables to multi-class classifiers such as support vector machines and proportional odds model to compare their predictive performances.

A Study on the Post-COVID-19 Class Satisfaction Survey of Radiology Majoring Students (방사선 전공 학생들을 대상으로 코로나 이후 수업 만족도 조사 연구)

  • This study surveyed 233 students who experienced non-face-to-face and face-to-face classes in "86 first-year, 76 second-year, and 71 third-year students" enrolled in the radiology department of universities in the Seoul metropolitan area. The main question of questionnaire consisted of a total of 14 questions, including online lectures and face-to-face lectures, use of electronic devices during classes, students' thoughts on flipped learning methods, and finally, whether it was helpful for students who were unable to participate in face-to-face classes due to COVID-19 to take classes online. The responses were composed optional to select the content of the questionnaire and descriptive to obtain open thinking from students. Comparing the significance level of responses of second and third graders based on the first graders, p>0.05 for second graders and p<0.05 for third graders, showing a significant difference in satisfaction with third graders who were greatly damaged by COVID-19 and freshmen. In conclusion, even in a situation where face-to-face lectures can be conducted, it is considered beneficial for students to conduct online lectures and face-to-face lectures according to the method of the major subject.
