Purpose: This descriptive correlational study was done to analyze the relationship between social support and self-care in hypertensive patients aged 30 years or older. Methods: Data were collected from April 09 to April 16, 2020 through an online survey (Naver Form) at Internet cafes and SNS Eighty 80 adults aged 30 or older who had been diagnosed with high blood pressure at a medical institution participated in the study. Data were analyzed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffé's test and Pearson correlation coefficients with SPSS statistics 26.0. Results: The study results showed that social support for hypertensive patients was significantly higher for men (t=-2.17, p=.033), according to religious status (t=-2.33, p=.023), and the number of people in the household (F=6.05, p=.001). In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between social support and hypertensive self-care (r=.24, p=.036). Conclusion: The results confirm that the social support of patients with hypertension is related to self care for hypertension management. As the number of elders and single-person households who cannot manage their health well increases, it is necessary to establish a long-term and continuous social support system for these clients.
Purpose: This study aimed to examine the association between depression and eating behavior factors in Korean adults. Methods: Study subjects were selected (n = 5,103) from the participants of the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2018 and divided into depression (men, 59; women, 162) and normal groups (men, 2,083; women, 2,799). Subjects with a Patient Health Questionnaire 9 score ≥ 10 (out of 27 points) were defined as having depression. Results: A higher prevalence of depression was observed in both men and women who were unemployed (p < 0.001, p = 0.008), had lower income (both p < 0.001), poorer subjective health (both p < 0.001), and poor food safety (both p < 0.001). The prevalence of depression was higher in women with lower education levels (p = 0.008), who were unmarried (p = 0.010), smokers (p < 0.001), and in a one-person household (p = 0.001). Obese men showed a higher prevalence of depression (p = 0.009). Men who were eating alone or skipping lunch had a high prevalence of depression (p = 0.009), while women who were eating breakfast (p = 0.012), lunch (p = 0.001), and dinner (p = 0.010) alone had a high prevalence of depression. The relationship analysis between men and women according to dietary habits using logistic regression showed that, in women, after variable adjustment, skipping lunch (odds ratio [OR], 2.677; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.090-6.574), meal frequency of 2 times per day (OR, 1.658; 95% CI, 1.084-2.536), and lunch frequency of 3-4 times per week (OR, 3.143; 95% CI, 1.725-5.728) were significantly associated with a higher prevalence of depression. Conclusion: Depression in women was not only affected by more sociodemographic variables but also associated with decreased frequency of lunch and dinner, especially with skipping lunch.
This study was conducted to understand the perception and the usage pattern of egg dishes in university students. The questionnaires were collected from 200 university students residing in Seoul. The age group was 118 (59.0%) in 20s, 50 (25.0%) in 30s, and 32 (16.5%) in 40s and older. Also, 179 (89.5%) were undergraduate students and 21 (10.5%) were graduates. The result of food preferences in the overall survey was as follows: Meats and Poultry (4.46±1.03) > Seafoods (2.92±1.41) > Fruits (2.91±1.17) > Eggs (2.50±1.10) > Vegetables (2.21±1.17). The preference of foods using eggs as the main ingredient was as follows: Rolled egg (4.07±0.81) > Steamed egg (4.05±0.91) > Scrambled egg (3.83±1.03) > Rice omelet (3.77±1.03). The preference of foods using eggs as sub-ingredient was Egg in Ramyeon (4.11±1.08) > Fried egg over Bibimbob (3.87±0.91) > Sliced boiled egg in Naengmyeon (3.78±1.11). The preference of eggs as desserts was Egg tart (4.01±1.08) > Sponge cake (3.72±1.09) > Egg bread (3.63±1.13). The result of the frequency of eating eggs indicating that approximately two-thirds of university students consumed eggs more than 3 times a week. Although there was no significant difference, male students not only consumed eggs more frequently than female students, but also consumed a higher amount. In recent years, since one-person household in college students tends to increase, it is more important to save cooking time and food quality. Thus, the development and dissemination of various egg recipes should be prioritized for university students.
Objectives : Two related cases of Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome (HUS) were reported to the Korea National Institute of Health in May, 2001. Shiga toxin 2 genes were detected in both stool samples. We suspected an enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) infection as the cause of the HUS, and conducted an investigation to find the source of the infection and its route of transmission. Methods : We peformed case investigations on these two related HUS cases, and obtained interviews and rectal swabs form the family members and other close contacts. Additionally, we peformed rectal swabs on the cattle raised by the household of the index patient. Results : We found a 20 month old index patient and a 6 year-old cousin had developed HUS, where there had been a 2 day history of contact with the index, and bacteriological examinations for these two patients revealed, indistinguishably, the same E. coli O171. The grandmother of the index patient was found to be asymptomatic, but E. coli O26 was isolated. We also found a probable case in the mother of the cousin. She reported a history of contact with the index, and developed bloody diarrhea of 3 days duration. The test results for the cattle revealed E. coli O26 in one cow, and E. coli O26 and O55 in another. E. coli O26, which was isolated in both cows and the grandmother of the index, were indistinguishably the same. Conclusions : We found that the E. coli O26 in the grandmother had originated from the cows, and that the E. coli O171 found in the index patient had been transmitted to the cousin through person-to-person contact.
Recently, the interest and consumption of mini watermelon (Citrullus lunatus Thunb.) are increasing due to nuclear family and one person household. However, there's no research for mini watermelon. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to develop standard cultivation method of mini watermelon. The test cultivar is 'Minimi', which is a small-sized fruit, the rootstock is 'Bullojangsaeng', which is a cucurbit line. Grafted plants were transplanted on April 5, 2017, and harvested in early July. Cultivated types were 3 methods, which are ${\cap}-form$, arched, and runner type, and plant spacing were 40, 60, and 80 cm, respectively. The rowth and yield in ${\cap}-form$ was higher than that of the arched and runner types, and the sugar content was higher a bit. The yield per unit area was about 50% higher than ${\cap}-form$, which can be plant density cultivation than that of the runner type. The number of seeds per fruit of 'Minimi' was similar to that of 'Sambokggul', but seed weight was one third lower than that of 'Sambokggul'. The content of lycopene was 30% higher than that of 'Sambokggul' watermelon, and the main sugar content is similar to or slightly less. In conclusion, the ${\cap}-form$ staking cultivation was superior to the runner type or arched cultivation in terms of fruit setting ratio, yield and quality.
With changing socio-economic environments, there have been some changes in the Korean diet. One of major changes is the increasing fat intake. Based on the current trend of increase, it is important to understand factors related to fat intake levels. Objective of this study was to find out the differences in food consumption patterns, demographic characteristics, and other socio-economic factors among three groups of households. The households were devided into three groups by percentage of fat energy intake to total energy intake such as less than 15%(Group 1), from 15% to 25%(Group 2), and more than 25% (Group 3). Among 1, 987 households, the numbers in Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3 were 792(39.6%), 902(45.4%), and 293(15.1%), respectively. The mean size of family was 3.44 person per households for total survey household, 3.42 for Group 1, 3.54 for Group 2, and 3.21 for Group 3. More than 60% of families living in the rural area belonged to Group 1(p<0.05). Group 3 had most educated food preparers and more income than other groups(p<0.05). Group 3 showed higher intake of all nutrient analyzed except carbohydrate (p<0.05). Other than calcium and vitamin A for Group 1, and vitamin A for Group 1, and vitamin A for Group 2, all nutrient intake analyzed for three groups were more than 75% of Korean recommended dietary alowances. Mean fat intakes for Group 1, Group 2, and group 3 had highest amount of intake for all food groups. According to food group analysis, Group 3 had highest amount of intake for all food groups except vegetables. Group 3 consumed more than 10 times of meats compared to Group 1. Group 3 had more dishes prepared by baking, deep-fryng, stir-frying, and pan-frying other two groups. Processed foods were used most frequently in Group 3. Other diet and related factors were analyzed also. These results showed that the amount of fat consumed by Korean households varies widely. Households with high fat energy intake had tendency to reside in the largy city, and to have heigher education level and more income than other groups. They eat less vegetables, use more cooking methods using oils, and use more processed foods. To ensure a proper intake of fat, there should be two separate ways of approach for high fat energy group and low fat energy group, since they are different in many ways.
The purpose of this study was analyze life condition and needs for welfare service of women with disabilities in adult in Gyeongbuk. And to suggest ways to support effective. Method was conducted a questionnaire survey of 465 subjects. The results of this study was as follows: First, The women with disabilities in young adults was two generations, one children, high school graduate, spouseless, mental disabilities. Also, The needs for welfare services about economic activities and employment was high. Second, The women with disabilities in middle-age people was two generations, two children, high school graduate, spouse, physical or cerebral palsy disabilities. Also, The needs for welfare services about daily activity support, economic activities, employment and pregnancy, childbirth, childcare was high. Third, The women with disabilities in older adults was single-person household, three children, elementary school graduate, spouseless, physical or cerebral palsy disabilities. Also, The needs for welfare services about health and medical care was high. Finally, They needs support in economic activities, employment and daily activity support and pregnancy, childbirth, childcare, and health, medical care. Based on this, Suggestions for effective support were suggested.
Purpose: This study was conducted to analyze food consumption behavior of women by marital status based on the 2015 consumer survey data on Food Consumption Behaviors of the Korea Rural Economic Institute. Methods: We analyzed data describing 3,312 women aged 19 ~ 75 who were the main buyers of foods in their household. The food purchase patterns, dining-out behavior, and use of food-delivery and take-out were investigated. Results: Overall, 40.5% of unmarried women shopped for food once per week and 37.4% spent 200,000 ~ 400,000 won per month. Additionally, 43.1% of married women shopped 2 ~ 3 times per week and 26.6% spent 400,000 ~ 600,000 won (p < 0.0001). Dining-out frequency and one-time cost per person of dining-out for unmarried women were higher than those for married women. With delivery/take-out food frequency, 2 time per week was the highest rate among married women (34.6%) and once per week was the highest among unmarried women (31.2%) respectively. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate food consumption behaviors and trends of Korean women by marital status. This study provides basic data that will be useful for food industries establishing marketing strategies to better meet consumer demands.
The purpose of this study was to compare the difference of two survey methods for health services research. Data were collected by means of two types of household survey conducted from March 11 to September 19, 1985. A probability sample of 30,613 persons was taken from 180 Enumerated Districts designated by the Economic Planning Board. The sample was divided into two groups systematically. One group was surveyed by the self-administered questionnaire and the other group was interviewed. Response rates were 81.4% and 90.6% respectively. The data were analysed by the ratio of the results of the self-administered survey to those of the interview survey. No difference was observed in sex, age, residence, or occupation between the two groups. However the respondents' characteristics were statistically different between the two groups. The major findings of this study are as follows : 1. The morbidity rate was 142.5 per 1,000 persons during the two week period by the self-administered questionnaire survey and 74.3 per 1,000 persons with the interview survey method. The ratio of the morbidity rate by the self-administered questionnaire to that by the interview was 1.92, and the difference between the two rates were due to the personal characteristics. 2. The out-patient utilization rate was 10.2 visits per person per year by the self-administered questionnaire survey and 5.4 by the interview survey, and the ratio was 1.89; the admission rate was 3.2 times per 100 persons per year by the self-administered questionnaire survey and 1.9 times by the interview survey, and the ratio was 1.68. Differences due to the sociodemographic characteristics were greater in the out-patient utilization rates than in the adimssion rates. 3. Percentages of effective medical care demand were 90.2% in the self-administered survey and 92.3% in the interview survey; the ratio was 0.98 which was less than that of the morbidity rate and medical care utilization. But, differences of effective medical care demand occurred in persons with no occupation, and aged or low educated respondents. 4. Respiratory illness had the highest frequency in the two survey methods. But there was a slight difference between the two survey methods in morbidity composition. 5. It was concluded that data collected by the interview survey were inclined to be underestimated and this problem can be corrected by a modified self-administered survey.
This study conducted a survey with 203 single households among men and women in their 20s to 40s who were living in metropolitan areas from October 6 to November 4, 2012 in order to investigate the dietary attitude of the single households. The ratio of single households who had three meals a day regularly was 2.85 points, which was lower than the normal level, and it turned out that those in their 20s and 30s had meals more regularly than those in their 40s did (p<0.001). As for the irregular meal time, most were breakfast (85.9%), and it turned out that they often skipped meals mostly because they did not have time to eat and (41.7%) or because that bothered them (26.0%). 62.6% of the single households did overeating and most of them (39.4%) did overeating because of their irregular meals. Of the single households, women or persons who had lived alone for less than 3 years or more than 7 years cooked at home, more often (p<0.05), and most of them (42%) cooked noodles, easy to cook, but women cooked Korean food-based homemade food such as rice (31.7%) or soup and stew (21.2%), often (p<0.05). It turned out that 36.9% of the single households often ate out about two to three times a day, and as for their favorite eating-out menus, 39.4% were Korean food, followed by Western food (23.8%), flour-based food (13.5%), fast food (9.8%), Chinese food (7.3%) and Japanese food (6.2%). Lastly, as for inconveniences when they ate out, most were the 'price' (22.8%), followed by 'too much amount of food for one person' (20.2%) and 'limitations in menu selection' (19.2%). As a result of this study, it appeared that the single households had an irregular dietary life, often did overeating and often ate out, so it is judged that it would be necessary to develop a variety of nutritionally-balanced HMR food and eating-out menus in a reasonable price range for their healthy dietary life.
