An innovative batch electrolytic system consisted of electrolytic basin, which was equipped with DSA(Dimensionally Stable Anode) type insoluble electrode, Ti/IrO2 anode and H-C metal cathode, and flotation separator was developed for the efficient treatment of shipboard emulsified oily wastewater. The electorod cleance and current density of elecrolytic basin to ensure maximum treatment efficiency of oily wastewater was evaluated as 6 mm, 3 A/dm3, respectively. The electrolytic efficiency of oily wastewater was affected by the operationtemperature, and it means that the temperature controller to ensure the stabiity of the process is required. The conductivity in the electrolytic basin was increased with the percentage of sea water in the oily wastewater, and over 90% of treatment efficiency of oily wastewater could be obtained at 7% of sea water. The oil removal rate was increased according to the increase of the quantity of electricity, and the maximum value of electrilyic rate constant was 288 mgoil/A.min. The information obtained from this study might be used for development of an efficient continuous electrolytic system treating the emulsified oily wastewater.
Petroleum refining unavoidably generates large volumes of oily wastewater. The environmentally acceptable disposal of oily wastewater is a current challenge to the petroleum industry. Nowadays, more attentions have been focused on the treatment techniques of oily wastewater. Oily wastewater contained highly concentrated and toxic organic compounds. Wet peroxide oxidation (WPO) and catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) were applied to eliminate pollutants to examine the feasibility of the WPO/CWO of oily wastewater. The results indicated that more than 80% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from oily wastewater was achieved with CWO. Homogenous catalyst, $NaHCO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$ and NaOH showed effective removal for pollutants in oily wastewater. Greater than 90% COD removal was achieved with WPO. It was concluded that WPO was a far more effective process for oily wastewater.

Emulsified oily wastewater is generally hard to treat in separating oil and water by conventional separators. In this paper the magnetohydrodynamic water treatment device was used to separate oil from emulsified oily wastewater which contained high conductivity. The emulsified oil removal rates and economic ranges of oil separation at various factors were investigated to confirm the influence of the magnetic field in MHD water treatment device according to the characteristics of emulsion brake. Experimental results proved that the oil removal rates were proportional to Lorentz force which depends on the intensity of magnetic field, conductivity and velocity of wastewater.
An inverse fluidized-bed biofilm reactor (IFBBR) was used for the treatment of highly-emulsified oily wastewater. When the concentration of biomass which was cultivated in the synthetic wastewater reached to 6000 mg/1, the oily wastewater was employed to the reactor with a input COD concentration range of 50 mg/1 to 1900 mg/l. Virtually the IFBBR showed a high stability during the long operation period although soma fluctuation was observed. The COD removal efficiency was maintained over 9% under the condition that organic loading rate should be controlled under the value of 1.5 kgCOD/$m^3$/day, and F/M ratio is 1.0 kgCOD/kgVSS/day at $22{\circ}C$ and HRT of 12 hrs. As increasing organic loading rates, the biomass concentration was decreased steadily with decreasing of biofilm dry density rather than biofilm thickness. Based on the experimental jesuits, it was suggested that the decrease in biofilm dry density was caused by a loss of biomass inside the biofilm.
The process of petroleum involves in a large amount of oily wastewater that contains high levels of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and toxic compounds. So they must be treated before their discharge into the receptor medium. In this paper, wet peroxide oxidation (WPO) was adopted to treat the oily wastewater. Central composite design, an experimental design for response surface methodology (RSM), was used to create a set of 31 experimental runs needed for optimizing of the operating conditions. Quadratic regression models with estimated coefficients were developed to describe the COD removals. The experimental results show that WPO could effectively reduce COD by 96.8% at the optimum conditions of temperature $290^{\circ}C$, $H_2O_2$ excess (HE) 0.8, the initial concentration of oily wastewater 3855 mg/L and reaction time 9 min. RSM could be effectively adopted to optimize the operating multifactors in complex WPO process.
In the following study, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used for prediction of permeate flux decline during oily wastewater treatment by hybrid powdered activated carbon-microfiltration (PAC-MF) process using mullite and mullite-alumina ceramic membranes. Permeate flux is predicted as a function of time and PAC concentration. To optimize the networks performance, different transfer functions and different initial weights and biases have been tested. Totally, more than 850,000 different networks are tested for both membranes. The results showed that 10:6 and 9:20 neural networks work best for mullite and mullite-alumina ceramic membranes in PAC-MF process, respectively. These networks provide low mean squared error and high linearity between target and predicted data (high $R^2$ value). Finally, the results present that ANN provide best results ($R^2$ value equal to 0.99999) for prediction of permeation flux decline during oily wastewater treatment in PAC-MF process by ceramic membranes.
The feasibility of applying coagulation-integrated microfiltration (MF) as a pretreatment for an ultrafiltration (UF) feed in oily wastewater treatment was investigated. The effects of different coagulants on oil removal rates from wastewater were studied. The maximum oil removal rate of 82% was obtained after coagulation with 130 mg/L of polyaluminium chloride (PAC). UF flux reached $95L/(m^2{\cdot}h)$ with coagulation-integrated MF as pretreatment. This value was 2.5 times higher than that flux obtained without pretreatment. The value of UF flux increased as the transmembrane pressure (TMP) and cross-flow velocity (CFV) of the UF module increased. UF flux gradually increased when TMP and CFV exceeded 0.4 MPa and 3 m/s, respectively, because of concentration polarization and membrane fouling stabilization. Chemical oxygen demand reduction and oil removal rate reached 95.2% and 98.5%, respectively, during integrated membrane processing with a PAC concentration of 130 mg/L, TMP of 0.4 MPa, and CFV of 3 m/s for UF. In addition, sequentially cleaning the fouling membrane with NaOH and $HNO_3$ aqueous solutions caused UF flux to recover to 90%. These encouraging results suggested that the hybrid integrated membrane process-based coagulation and MF + UF are effective approaches for oily wastewater treatment.

This work aims to investigate the oily wastewater treatment by the electrocoagulation-flotation (ECF) and propose a mathematical model for the efficiency prediction. Cutting oil was used to prepare the synthetic oily wastewater with submicron droplet sizes. The chemical coagulation by aluminium sulfate was firstly tested following by the electrocoagulation-flotation with aluminium electrodes. Both processes gave the effective treatment performance with the efficiencies higher than 90%. However, the ECF consumed less aluminium dosage as well as produced less sludge, which were its advantage on the chemical coagulation. The performance of the ECF was found to be affected by the current density, oil concentration, and reaction time according to the analysis by the design of experiment (DOE). Finally, the prediction model was proposed by two approaches, including linear and logarithm function. The latter model gave more accuracy prediction results in terms of treatment efficiency and duration in the lag and stable stages.
Large amounts of oily wastewater discharged from various industrial operations (petroleum refining, machinery industries and chemical industries) cause serious pollution in the aquatic environment. Although dissolved air flotation (DAF) separating oil pollutants using microbubbles represents current practice, bubble size cannot be selectively controlled, and lots of power is required to generate microbubbles. Therefore, to investigate performance of the DAF process, this study examined the distribution of different sizes of microbubbles resulting from changes in physical shear force via modifying shapes of a slit-nozzle without an additional power supply. Three types of slit-nozzles (different angle, shape and length of the slit-nozzle) were used to analyze the distribution of bubble size. At a slit angle of $60^{\circ}$, shear force was 4.29 times higher than a conventional slit, and particle size distribution (PSD) in the range between 2 and $20{\mu}m$ more than doubled. Treatment efficiency of synthetic oily wastewater through the coagulation-DAF process achieved 90% removal of COD by injecting $FeCl_3$ and PACl of 250 mg/L and 100 mg/L, respectively, and the same performance resulted using $FeCl_3$ of 200 mg/L and PACl of 80 mg/L employing a slit-nozzle angle of $60^{\circ}$. This study shows that a coagulation-DAF process using a modified slit-nozzle can improve the pre-treatment of oily wastewater.
Separation of oily wastewater, which is a byproduct of various industries such as petroleum refineries, is essential to not exceed the tolerance limit of wastewater streams. Ceramic membranes show potential in oily wastewater separation, due to their excellent oil removal efficiency, good chemical, thermal, and mechanical stability, and simple operation. However, widespread application of ceramic membranes is limited due to high material cost of alumina, silica, and other ceramic based materials used to fabricate them. Recent efforts to reduce material cost have been made, using fly ash and clay. This review examines the fabrication and efficiency of ceramic membranes in oily wastewater separation according to material: silica, alumina, and waste ash.
